FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

Dear Delegates,

FIMUN 32 JCC Hong Kong: The Death of Autonomy, 2050 3

FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL Dear Delegates, It is my pleasure to welcome you to FIMUN 32! FIMUN strives to provide delegates with the opportunity to develop and practice the critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills needed to become the future leaders of our generation, while executing substance and diplomacy in the face of all odds. As the current number one nationally ranked collegiate Model United Nations team in North America, we aim to continuously improve upon our ability to provide you with rigorous, diplomatic debate where you can propose solutions to the most pressing issues of our time.

This is my third year participating in both FIMUN and on FIU’s traveling Model UN team. Last year, I served as Director of Logistics for FIMUN 31, and previously served as a Committee Chair for the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees for FIMUN 30. It was my experience as a chair where I fell in love with the energy brought to the conference by the high-school and middle-school delegates, and knew I had to stay involved. The FIMUN 32 Secretariat and myself have been working since last April to prepare, plan, and execute the best delegate experience possible for you all, and I truly cannot wait to hear about all the interesting crisis notes, directives, and resolution ideas brought forth in committee.

We listened to your feedback and are hoping to deliver a truly unique conference this year. Our fourteen committees are staffed by amazing, hardworking, and dedicated Directors. From our variety of historical, fantasy, and present-day Crisis committees, to our unique Specialized Agencies, to the rich academic and diplomatic nature of our General Assemblies, FIMUN delegates will have the potential to delve into the nuances of the challenges facing world leaders today, begging the question: What legacy will you leave behind? While the decisions and policies proposed inside the committee room are important, we hope that each and every delegate leaves FIMUN 32 as a better leader, but most importantly, as a better person.

While I understand the competitive nature of this weird, fun, and addictive activity, I strongly urge all delegates to behave with the utmost integrity, respect, and diplomacy when engaging with their staff and their peers. We hope that FIMUN 32 fosters an environment of inclusivity and learning, where all ideas can be heard, constructively analyzed, and debated both inside and outside of the committee room.

Once again, welcome to FIMUN 32. May your notes be substantive, your resolutions comprehensive, and your experience unforgettable!

All the best, Pierina Anton Secretary General, FIMUN 32

FROM THE UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR CRISIS COMMITTEES Dear Delegates, My name is Gabriel Lewin, one of the USGs for crisis and member of FIU’s Model UN team. For the past semester the directors of committees with their chairs and help from the Secretariat have worked hard to create fascinating committees involving history and fantasy. Joining the team has allowed me to enjoy the opportunities such as friends and connections that you make at conferences allows for greater diplomacy to take place outside of committee. Hopefully all of you will have your own experience to take form this.

Look forward to meeting you all!

Sincerely, Gabriel Lewin Under-Secretary-General for Crisis Committees, FIMUN 32

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Hello everyone!

My name is Ashley Weathers, your crisis director for JCC Hong Kong: The Death of Autonomy, 2050. I am currently a junior at FIU majoring in Economics and International Relations, while pursuing a certificate in Pre-Law and a Global Learning Medallion. I am Tampa born and raised but decided to come to Miami for FIU’s School of International and Public Affairs.

I hope to pursue a career in International Law and Economic Development going forward, which undeniably holds so many parallels to the topics we discuss in Model UN. After joining FIU Model UN in Spring 2018, I realized that I should’ve joined so much sooner. In the past year I have been able to travel to 6 different conferences, where I have learned so much about the importance of integrity, knowledge, and personal ability in the scope of Model UN. This will be my third FIMUN after being a co-chair and chair for the past two years. I am ecstatic to be able to lead the creation of both sides of this JCC.

In 1997, Margaret Thatcher relinquished the territory of Hong Kong back to after 156 years of colonization. This exchange of ownership was coupled with a contract between England and China to ensure 50 years of autonomy for Hong Kong under Chinese rule. Although this contract was supposed to end in 2047, to no surprise the Chinese forcefully reclaimed Hong Kong in 2045 without waiting for the expiration of their autonomy. Between the oppression of Hong Kong citizens to their abrupt forced integration, a lot has happened in the past 30 years. In this committee, we must reform the system ruling over Hong Kong to liberate our home. As the Hong Kong Rebel Group, our sole priority is to act in the interest of the people.

We hope to see strategy and creativity in each of your plans during the weekend. Diplomacy and thorough research will shine through as you begin to formulate the protection of Hong Kong. In this storyline you may hope for an underdog victory, but China is not just any country. It will take leaps and bounds to rival the most powerful country of the past two centuries. Everyone will surely have their own motivations this weekend, but don’t forget that the Chinese will be the true enemy. I wish you all the best of luck and cannot wait to see what you create. If you have any questions whether it be in regard to substance, procedure, or really anything, please feel free to email me!

Best,

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Greetings, Delegates!

Welcome to FIMUN 32’s JCC, Hong Kong: The Death of Autonomy, 2050. My name is German Garcia and I will also be your director for this amazing committee. A little bit about myself: I am a Senior studying International Relations and Political Science with a focus in National Security Studies and a very special interest for Asia. This is my second time being director for a FIMUN committee. And fun fact, I’ve lived in China for a short period and been to Hong Kong! But enough talk about myself, I want to put the spotlight on you all and congratulate you for showing interest and being involved with the affairs that shape our world.

This JCC will be full of surprises and will emulate the evolution of current geopolitical affairs regarding China and Hong Kong. As a delegate that specializes in Crisis Committees, along with Ashley, I will try my best to make this the best crisis committee you’ve been in. Be prepared to learn, adapt, and have in hand lots of creativity to address issues. I can’t wait for this to start!

Please let me know if you have any procedural or content questions. I look forward to spending the weekend with you all.

Best,

German Garcia [email protected] Crisis Director, JCC Hong Kong: Reclaiming the Homeland, 2050, FIMUN 32
