Ronald begins to attend King Edward’s School. 1901 Mabel and the boys move from Moseley to King’s Heath. 1902 Mabel and the boys leave King’s Heath and move to Oliver Road, Edgbaston. Ronald and Hilary are enrolled at St Philip’s Grammar School. 1903 The boys are removed from St Philip’s. Ronald obtains a scholarship to King Edward’s and returns there in the autumn. 1904 Early in the year Mabel Tolkien is discovered to have diabetes. She spends some weeks in hospital. In the summer she and the boys stay at Rednal. In November she dies, aged 34. 1905 The boys move into their Aunt Beatrice’s house in Stirling Road. 1908 The boys move to Mrs Faulkner’s house in Duchess Road. Ronald meets Edith Bratt. 1909 Autumn: Ronald’s romance with Edith Bratt is discovered by Father Francis Morgan. Ronald fails to obtain a scholarship at Oxford. 1910 January: Ronald and Hilary move to new lodgings. -

Department of ENGLISH The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date October, 1967 ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis has been to define Max Beerbohm's critical literary principles, to evaluate his con• tribution to aesthetic criticism and thereby to determine his place in the critical tradition. The methods of investi• gation have been: to study the formative influences on the development of his critical principles and to evaluate the results of their application in Max's essays and dramatic criticisms. From this study it is evident that as a man and as an artist Max was "formed" during the Eighteen-nineties. By nature he was an intellectual dandy who always preferred strong, narrow creative personalities like himself. He was detached, fastidious, witty, and humane, and he was noted for his wisdom and sound common sense, even as a very young man. -

13 Reflections on Tolkien’s Use of Beowulf Arne Zettersten University of Copenhagen Beowulf, the famous Anglo-Saxon heroic poem, and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Author of the Century”, 1 have been thor- oughly analysed and compared by a variety of scholars.2 It seems most appropriate to discuss similar aspects of The Lord of the Rings in a Festschrift presented to Nils-Lennart Johannesson with a view to his own commentaries on the language of Tolkien’s fiction. The immediate pur- pose of this article is not to present a problem-solving essay but instead to explain how close I was to Tolkien’s own research and his activities in Oxford during the last thirteen years of his life. As the article unfolds, we realise more and more that Beowulf meant a great deal to Tolkien, cul- minating in Christopher Tolkien’s unexpected edition of the translation of Beowulf, completed by J.R.R. Tolkien as early as 1926. Beowulf has always been respected in its position as the oldest Germanic heroic poem.3 I myself accept the conclusion that the poem came into existence around 720–730 A.D. in spite of the fact that there is still considerable debate over the dating. The only preserved copy (British Library MS. Cotton Vitellius A.15) was most probably com- pleted at the beginning of the eleventh century. 1 See Shippey, J.R.R. Oxford City Council Local Sites Audit Plan 2036 BACKGROUND PAPER INTRODUCTION 1. This background paper forms part of the evidence base for the Oxford Local Plan 2036 and supplements the relevant background papers on Site Assessments that were published at the Issues stage of consultation in 2016 and the Preferred Options stage of consultation in 2017. For clarity, the 2016 and 2017 papers have not been reproduced here but this paper should be read alongside the previous papers. 2. The first part of the paper provides background information on the sites identified at Preferred Options Stage and provides information on how these were identified and the assessment process used to determine which sites would be taken forward for further investigation. 3. The second part sets out the differences between the list of sites accepted at Preferred Options stage and those taken forward into the Proposed Submission Plan. Within this section there is commentary on further reasons considered to help determine which sites should go forward and why sites were rejected at this stage. The section also includes commentary on additional sites that were added at this stage and the reasons for this. 4. The paper is supported by two Appendices. Appendix 1 is a list of Preferred Options rejected sites. This list has been updated with an additional column added to identify sites that were previously rejected but are now being accepted. The additional column contains commentary on why these sites are now being accepted and included within the Proposed Submission Plan. Appendix 2 is a list of the Preferred Options accepted sites. -
Slavonic Studies at Oxford: a Brief History
SLAVONIC STUDIES AT OXFORD: A BRIEF HISTORY Prehistory: Latin versus vernacular In the Middle Ages the language in which Englishmen conversed and corresponded with the Slavs of western Christendom, on the rare occasions when they came into contact with them, was Latin. The existence of an international language was of great convenience to both sides, obviating the necessity to learn or take any interest in vernacular languages. An example of how it was possible to live in a Slavonic environment using only Latin is provided by the Wycliffite Peter Payne, Principal of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, who in 1413 left England and settled in Bohemia There he was able, speaking and writing in Latin, to assume an influential position in the world of learning and religion. His English pronunciation, it is true, did not go unnoticed, but this did not prevent him participating to great effect in public debate and swaying his audiences. Even after thirty years residence in the Czech lands he still contrived to remain ignorant of the vernacular, to judge from the accusation made against his opponent at a Prague synod in 1444 of having deliberately spoken Czech so that Payne could not understand him (Šmahel 2004). In Early Modern times too the study of the Slavonic languages (no less than that of other modern European vernaculars) was inhibited by the status and convenience of Latin, but the situation changed suddenly and drastically, when in 1553 England established contact with Slavs of the Eastern Rite following the unexpected arrival of Richard Chancellor’s ship the Edward Bonaventure at the port of St Nicholas on the White Sea. -

Lewis and Tolkien Carolyn Jones Medine, Professor of Religion and in the Institute for African American Studies Office: 19 Peabody Hall Telephone: 706-542-5356 (messages) E-Mail: [email protected] Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday 1:30-2:30 and by appointment Graduate Teaching Assistants: Noah Pollock, Jessica Couch, Eduardo Mendez I Course Description Religion and Literature’s goal is to examine the problematic of religion in the modern world and to explore basic human questions, such as those of identity, community, ethical action, and spirituality and how those have been expressed in literature. The language of such an exploration is sometimes specifically Christian; sometimes it interprets Christian language in new way, but often, the religious meanings are hybrid, using a number of traditions in syncretic ways. The first work in the field was on specifically Christian writers. We will, this semester, revisit that landscape. This course will examine the works of two of the group of writers who called themselves The Inklings: J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. Each was a Christian who expressed his faith through his art. We want to ask: Why do Christian writers—not just the Inklings, but also, for example, Walker Percy, Flannery O’Connor, Madeline L’Engle, and others—turn to fiction—in particular, to what Lewis and Tolkien called “the fairy story”—as a medium of expression of their ideas? TOLKIEN’S OWN RECORDING OF ‘THE HOMECOMING OF BEORHTNOTH BEORHTHELM’S SON’ Abstract ‘The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth’ may not be the best known work of Tolkien, but it has nonetheless managed to provoke a con- siderable amount of academic discussion, both on account of its lite- rary merits and the critical light it sheds upon the concept of hero- ism. Apart from that, it is also unusual in that it came to be captured on tape twice within just a year of its publication, first by the author himself, and then, a few months later, by the BBC. The article seeks to examine only the first of these recordings (without, however, disre- garding the latter), taking into consideration such performative traits as the use of distinct voices for each of the characters, sound effects produced by use of various domestic appliances and/or elements of furniture, chanting and declaiming funerary songs and prayers, as well as, no less significantly, different household and street noises which could be heard from time to time in the background. 212 Łukasz Neubauer Keywords: Tolkien, The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorh- thelm’s Son, The Battle of Maldon, audio recordings of Tolkien, oral performance It may come as something of a surprise, given the writer’s alleged dislike of modern technology,1 but the audio record- ings of Tolkien’s voice are not, in fact, so rare. -

My name is Simon Horobin and I’m a tutor in English at Magdalen College in Oxford and I’m going to take you on a tour of C.S. Lewis’s Oxford. We’re going to start our tour on the High Street, at the entranCe to Magdalen College. Although this isn’t where C.S. Lewis’s Oxford Career began, it’s the place that he is most Clearly linked with. The Shadowlands film that tells the story of his marriage to the writer Joy Davidman is set in Magdalen, even though by then Lewis had actually moved to Cambridge. It’s at Magdalen that he got his first Job, as a Tutorial Fellow in English and where he spent nearly 30 years. Entering the College through the gate beside the Great Tower we find ourselves in St John’s Quad. Opposite is the President’s Lodgings, whiCh is where Lewis was admitted to the Fellowship of Magdalen in 1925 in a Ceremony that remains unChanged today. Having sworn to uphold the statutes of the College, Lewis shook hands with all of the assembled fellows who wished him Joy: the ChoiCe of word seems signifiCant given Lewis’s later use of the term in his autobiography – Surprised by Joy – where it refers to a longing that left him unsatisfied whiCh ultimately led to his Conversion to Christianity, and given his later relationship with Joy Davidman. Turning into the Cloisters we pass the College Chapel on our right, where Lewis attended daily serviCes following his Conversion: there is a plaque identifying his usual seat.
