The great composers should regularly be represented on Radio 3, but there should also be a range of less familiar music in order to introduce listeners to new works." There was discussion at the focus group on the range of repertoire available on the Radio 3. Two main points emerged. Broadening awareness Listeners place a high value on the network’s ability to broaden their awareness of the extent of the classical music repertoire. “One of its functions is to be like a public library of music.” This applied to other genres, such as jazz and world music, as well. Radio 3’s role in relation to the mainstream repertoire is not to support it, but to challenge it. “You’re always learning... but it’s never condescending, and you’re never preached at.” “There is lots of assumed knowledge [of music], but there are other places for people who don’t have that, like Classic FM” “It’s not targeted at a particular age... it’s targeted at people who want to be stimulated or challenged” (West of Scotland, early 20s) For some loyal listeners, the range of repertoire was thought to have narrowed in the last ten years or so: coverage of new music was said to be less extensive now. In the critical aspect of my dissertation I contest a dominant account of poetic creation and influence in the period 1938–1954, and consider a third line of influence that arose in post-war British poetry. The methodology follows in the footsteps of Other Traditions by John Ashbery: literary criticism by a practitioner. My critical writing complements my poetry collection, whose various styles and registers relate to the poetic influences discussed. My first three chapters develop the argument as follows: Chapter One considers ideas of ‗style‘ and ‗poetic style‘. Chapter Two narrows in on the idea of ‗period style‘ in poetry and turns more specifically into a discussion of the Forties Style in Poetry. The first two chapters outline a climate of new rights and opportunities in which women became public poets for the first time. They ran printing presses and bookshops, edited magazines and wrote criticism. They aimed to align themselves with a male tradition which excluded them and insisted upon their difference. Defining themselves antithetically to the mythologised poetess of the nineteenth century and popular verse, they developed strategies for disguising their gender through indeterminate speakers, fictional dramatisations or anti-realist subversions.

    SLAVONIC STUDIES AT OXFORD: A BRIEF HISTORY Prehistory: Latin versus vernacular In the Middle Ages the language in which Englishmen conversed and corresponded with the Slavs of western Christendom, on the rare occasions when they came into contact with them, was Latin. The existence of an international language was of great convenience to both sides, obviating the necessity to learn or take any interest in vernacular languages. An example of how it was possible to live in a Slavonic environment using only Latin is provided by the Wycliffite Peter Payne, Principal of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, who in 1413 left England and settled in Bohemia There he was able, speaking and writing in Latin, to assume an influential position in the world of learning and religion. His English pronunciation, it is true, did not go unnoticed, but this did not prevent him participating to great effect in public debate and swaying his audiences. Even after thirty years residence in the Czech lands he still contrived to remain ignorant of the vernacular, to judge from the accusation made against his opponent at a Prague synod in 1444 of having deliberately spoken Czech so that Payne could not understand him (Šmahel 2004). In Early Modern times too the study of the Slavonic languages (no less than that of other modern European vernaculars) was inhibited by the status and convenience of Latin, but the situation changed suddenly and drastically, when in 1553 England established contact with Slavs of the Eastern Rite following the unexpected arrival of Richard Chancellor’s ship the Edward Bonaventure at the port of St Nicholas on the White Sea.

We are taking two distinct approaches to commissioning. Each of them has two phases. Specific ideas Drama and Comedy programmes – and some Factual programmes – are being commissioned in the traditional Radio 4 manner, in which we invite you to submit proposals for specific ideas.
