British theatre was at the same time largely commercial and offered a glamorous distraction from wider social and political realities. During the decade, however, new avant-garde approaches to drama emerged, both on the stage and on radio. The avant-garde was particularly vibrant in Paris where Samuel Beckett was beginning to challenge theatrical orthodoxies. Initially, managers and producers in BBC radio rejected a radio version of Beckett’s, Waiting for Godot and other experimental work was viewed with distaste but eventually Beckett was accepted and commissioned to write All That Fall (1957), a masterpiece of radio drama. Other Beckett broadcasts followed, including more writing for radio, extracts from his novels and radio versions of his stage plays as well as plays by the experimental radio dramatist, Giles Cooper. This article examines the different change agents which enabled an initially reluctant BBC to convert enthusiastically to the avant-garde. A networked group of younger producers, men and women, played a vital role in the acceptance of Beckett as did the striking pragmatism of senior radio managers. A willingness to accept the transnational cultural flow from Paris to London was also an important factor. The attempt to reinvent radio drama using ‘radiophonic’ sound effects (pioneered in Paris) was another factor for change and this was encouraged by growing competition from television drama on the BBC and ITV. -

13 Reflections on Tolkien’s Use of Beowulf Arne Zettersten University of Copenhagen Beowulf, the famous Anglo-Saxon heroic poem, and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Author of the Century”, 1 have been thor- oughly analysed and compared by a variety of scholars.2 It seems most appropriate to discuss similar aspects of The Lord of the Rings in a Festschrift presented to Nils-Lennart Johannesson with a view to his own commentaries on the language of Tolkien’s fiction. The immediate pur- pose of this article is not to present a problem-solving essay but instead to explain how close I was to Tolkien’s own research and his activities in Oxford during the last thirteen years of his life. As the article unfolds, we realise more and more that Beowulf meant a great deal to Tolkien, cul- minating in Christopher Tolkien’s unexpected edition of the translation of Beowulf, completed by J.R.R. Tolkien as early as 1926. Beowulf has always been respected in its position as the oldest Germanic heroic poem.3 I myself accept the conclusion that the poem came into existence around 720–730 A.D. in spite of the fact that there is still considerable debate over the dating. The only preserved copy (British Library MS. Cotton Vitellius A.15) was most probably com- pleted at the beginning of the eleventh century. 1 See Shippey, J.R.R. Oxford City Council Local Sites Audit Plan 2036 BACKGROUND PAPER INTRODUCTION 1. This background paper forms part of the evidence base for the Oxford Local Plan 2036 and supplements the relevant background papers on Site Assessments that were published at the Issues stage of consultation in 2016 and the Preferred Options stage of consultation in 2017. For clarity, the 2016 and 2017 papers have not been reproduced here but this paper should be read alongside the previous papers. 2. The first part of the paper provides background information on the sites identified at Preferred Options Stage and provides information on how these were identified and the assessment process used to determine which sites would be taken forward for further investigation. 3. The second part sets out the differences between the list of sites accepted at Preferred Options stage and those taken forward into the Proposed Submission Plan. Within this section there is commentary on further reasons considered to help determine which sites should go forward and why sites were rejected at this stage. The section also includes commentary on additional sites that were added at this stage and the reasons for this. 4. The paper is supported by two Appendices. Appendix 1 is a list of Preferred Options rejected sites. This list has been updated with an additional column added to identify sites that were previously rejected but are now being accepted. The additional column contains commentary on why these sites are now being accepted and included within the Proposed Submission Plan. Appendix 2 is a list of the Preferred Options accepted sites. -

Music Theory on the Radio:Theme and Temporality in Hans Keller’S First Functional Analysis
DOI: 10.1111/musa.12129 WILLIAM O’HARA MUSIC THEORY ON THE RADIO:THEME AND TEMPORALITY IN HANS KELLER’S FIRST FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS On the evening of 7 September 1957, listeners to the BBC Radio’s Third Programme were treated to a unique broadcast of Mozart’s String Quartet in D minor, K. 421. The performance, by the Aeolian String Quartet, was punctuated between movements by several minutes of additional music composed by the critic Hans Keller (1919–1985). The broadcast was the public’s first exposure to what Keller called ‘functional analysis’ (abbreviated FA), or, as he more vividly put it in a magazine article previewing the broadcast, ‘the musical analysis of music’ (Keller 1994, pp. 126–8).1 The wheels that set this event in motion had begun turning nearly a year and a half earlier. On 28 April 1956 Keller sent an unsolicited proposal to Roger Fiske, the producer in charge of music lectures for the BBC. In it he described an idea for a radio broadcast that would build upon the analytical method he had recently sketched in a pair of essays on Mozart’s music: a detailed study of Mozart’s C major Piano Concerto, K. 503, in The Musical Times (Keller 1956a), and a more wide-ranging chapter titled ‘The Chamber Music’ in The Mozart Companion (Keller 1956b). In the letter, Keller describes his project and what the audience might hear: I propose an hour’s broadcast, wordless throughout, which would attempt to analyse a work or movement of your own choice according to my method of analysis. -

This tiny coil of wire was ah essential part of the set and had to be carefully adjusted with the crystal so that the loudest sig nals could be heard in the headphones. The simplicity of these early receivers, consisting of little more than a few com ponents mounted on an ebonite panel, characterizes this experimental age when every listener was a pioneer. By the 1930s, however, the wireless set was an intrinsic part of every home- life, and manufacturers concentrated their efforts upon design, hiding the new technical refinements from the view of their customers. The radio had become for the general public less an object of scientific experiment and more a piece of furniture, whose unique amalgam of functional technology and aesthetic der sign gave it a central role in the develop ment of Art Deco. Jonathan Hill traces the history of the wireless set from the efforts of the irly amateur enthusiasts through its heyday in the Second World War to its eclipse with the advent of television. -
