This thesis hopesto contribute to that neglected area. The research, based on radio and written archives and interviews with former BBC staff, examines the BBC Radio 4 current affairs programme, Analysis between the years 1970 and 1983. It addressesa number of questionsabout the programme, including the precise reasonsfor its creation, how it evolved, and how it covered a range of current affairs topics. In addition, this history of current affairs radio provides useful, new insights into the rise of professionalism in the BBC, the existence of informal networks, impartiality and bias, the tension betweenelitism and populism and the specificity of current affairs. The thesis includes a full discussion of the history of current affairs radio from 1927 to 1960. In this section the relationship of the literary elite to the BBC in the 1930s is addressedand the evolution of the 'topical talk' and the post-war 'talks magazine' are described. The precise origins of Analysis in the late 1960s are explained with reference to the tension between the more journalistic and populist 1960s news sequencesand the elitist and anti-journalistic talks tradition from which Analysis emerged following the publication of Broadcasting in the Seventies. The role of individual presenters of Analysis is examined and the evolution of the form of 'broadcast talk' employed on the programme. There is a chapter on Analysis in Africa and a concluding chapter which evaluates the relationship betweenAnalysis and the emerging political ideology of Thatcherism. INTRODUCTION This chapter introduces the radio programme, Analysis, which is the main focus of the inquiry. It explains the reasons why not only this programme, but also radio history itself, are worthy of detailed research. There is also a justification for limiting inquiry brief the main to the period 1970 - 1983. This is followed by a discussion of the political context of the early years of Analysis and then by a statement of the research aims. The nature of broadcasting history itself is introduced here and the Introduction ends with a chapter-by-chapterthesis summary. The first edition of BBC Radio 4's Analysis was broadcast on Radio 4 at 9 p.m. on Thursday 10 April 1970. 'The War for Jenkins Ear' (on the subject of the forthcoming budget) was a forty-five minute programme presentedby Ian McIntyre and produced by his friend and colleague, George Fischer. Over the ensuing decades, Analysis examined, discussedand debateda wide range of mainly political issues concerning Britain and the wider world. It brought to the microphone an impressive array of contributors; every serving prime minister and most senior cabinet ministers, heads of state, senior academics from Britain and abroad, top industrialists and so on. Analysis was a single subject, weekly current affairs programme dealing with mainstreampolitical issues,both national and international. The programme is referred to in this thesis in the past tense as this researchstops at 1983: Analysis, however, continues to be broadcast and continues to espousemany Orogranime had of the original aims. In the period 1970 - 1983, each edition a presenterand one or more expert contributors. Although there were some variations in programme format, most consistedof pre-recorded interview extracts tied together by the scripted words of the presenter. A useful way of thinking of an edition of Analysis is as an 'essay' (a term used by presenters and producers of the time) authored by the presenterand illustrated by the commentsof contributors. Analysis was perceived by BBC managersas the 'flagship' current affairs radio programme 2 in much the sameway that Panorama 1 was the flagship television equivalent. I The main body of this thesis is concerned with Analysis from its first broadcast in 1970 to the end of 1983. This examination of one programme is prefaced by a selective history of BBC current affairs radio which considers the broadcasting context and heritage as it influenced the form content and production of the series. There are a number of reasons for choosing Analysis as the subject of a doctoral thesis. This was the 'flag ship' radio current affairs programme of the BBC. Analysis, as the following chapterswill show, not only dealt with the central political issuesof the day but did so using contributions from the political and academicelites and others. It therefore provides historians with an important record of contemporary debates as expressedby key participants and thinkers. The programme reflected firmly held, but now unfashionable, ideas about the nature of current affairs and broadcasting.

    Westminster MPs: performing politics Emma Crewe, SOAS, University of London Intentions My aim is to explore the work of Westminster Members of Parliament (MPs) in parliament and constituencies and convey both the diversity and dynamism of their political performances.1 Rather than contrasting MPs with an idealised version of what they might be, I interpret MPs’ work as I see it. If I have any moral and political intent, it is to argue that disenchantment with politics is misdirected – we should target our critiques at politicians in government rather than in their parliamentary role – and to call for fuller citizens’ engagement with political processes. Some explanation of my fieldwork in the UK’s House of Commons will help readers understand how and why I arrived at this interpretation. In 2011 then Clerk of the House, Sir Malcolm Jack, who I knew from doing research in the House of Lords (1998-2002), ascertained that the Speaker was ‘content for the research to proceed’, and his successor, Sir Robert Rogers, issued me with a pass and assigned a sponsor. I roamed all over the Palace, outbuildings and constituencies during 2012 (and to a lesser extent in 2013) listening, watching and conversing wherever I went. This entailed (a) observing interaction in debating chambers, committee rooms and in offices (including the Table Office) in Westminster and constituencies, (b) over 100 pre-arranged unstructured interviews with MPs, former MPs, officials, journalists, MPs’ staff and peers, (c) following four threads: media/twitter exchanges, the Eastleigh by-election with the three main parties, scrutiny of the family justice part of the Children and Families Bill, and constituency surgeries, (d) advising parliamentary officials on seeking MPs’ feedback on House services.

Some thoughts on how the radio voice anchors, contains and sometimes pierces (pre-print version; published in The Radio Journal, vol.11, no.1, April 2013, pp.59-73) Abstract This article argues that while psychoanalytic theory has been valuably employed by television, film and cultural studies, there has been no comparable 'psychoanalytic turn' in radio studies. It suggests that the concept of 'containment', as developed variously by Wilfred Bion and Esther Bick, might go some way to explain the powerful role that the voice of the radio presenter can play in the regular listener's internal world, with the capacity both to 'hold' the listener together, and to transform overwhelming fears into more manageable feelings. It argues that the disembodied radio voice does this partly because it recalls the prenatal power of the maternal voice, and partly through the temporal order that regular radio voices impose on the internal and external world. Both Second World War British radio catchphrases and Roosevelt's Fireside Chats are discussed in relation to their containment function. The article also explores the radio as a transitional space, as defined by Donald Winnicott, through which it can constitute listeners into an 'imagined community'. The majority were in support roles as typists, secretaries and clerks but, during the 1920s and 1930s, a significant number held important posts. As a modern industry, the BBC took a largely progressive approach towards the ‘career women’ on its staff, many of whom were in jobs that were developed specifically for the new medium of broadcasting. Women worked as drama producers, advertising representatives and Children’s Hour Organisers. They were talent spotters, press officers and documentary makers. Three women attained Director status while others held significant administrative positions. This article considers in what ways it was the modernity and novelty of broadcasting, combined with changing employment possibilities and attitudes towards women evident after the First World War, that combined to create the conditions in which they could excel. Keywords BBC, employment, history, interwar, radio, women Introduction In the conclusion to her chapter on women in the BBC in Women in Top Jobs, the sociologist Isobel Allen queried ‘whether women had done as well in the BBC as might be expected’ (Fogarty et al., 1971: 214). She pointed out that most of the very senior women were about to retire with no obvi- ous female successors. ‘There is certainly no reason to imagine’, she continued, ‘that anything like the situation in the early 1930s, when almost half the departmental heads in the BBC were women, could be repeated in the near future’ (Fogarty et al., 1971: 214).

Radio's very first play was broadcast from Station 2LO London on the 15th November 1922. The day after Broadcasting England first began and it was heard in the children's programme but the north region can probably boast the first adult play written for wireless. L. du Garde Peach was the author. It came from the British Broadcasting Company's Metrovix studio and was broadcast by Station 2ZY. By the start of the 1930s far more Northerners were hearing plays than seeing them in the theatre. They were produced by the likes of Jan Bussell, Cecil McGiven and by Edward Wilkinson. The radio dramatic feature became the invention and hallmark of Geoffrey Brideson and Frances Dillon, Olive Shapley and Joan Littlewood all working from North region. By the 1940s James R Gregson had started a school for Radio Playwrights at the Leeds Studios. No history of North Regional Broadcasting would be anywhere near compete without BBC Regional Drama's most distinguished name, that of Alfred Bradley who's with me now. 0:01:19 Alfred you joined in 1959?     The Birth of BBC Radio 4’s Analysis Hugh Chignell Hugh Chignell (Ph.D., Bournemouth University, 2005) is a Senior Lecturer in the Bournemouth Media School, Bournemouth University, United Kingdom. His research interests include broadcasting history with special reference to radio and radio archives. He is Chair of the (UK) Southern Broadcasting History Group. BBC Radio 4’s ‘Analysis’ was first broadcast in 1970 and represented a striking departure from the tendency to combine news and comment in radio current affairs. It was created by a small network of broadcasters who believed that current affairs was distinct from radio journalism. The publication of the controversial document ‘Broadcasting in the Seventies’ in 1969 and the outcry which followed it gave this group their opportunity to produce an elite form of radio. INTRODUCTION This article attempts to answer a series of very specific questions. Why was the flag ship BBC radio current affairs program, Analysis created when it was? What specific interpretation of ‘current affairs radio’ did it embody and what made its birth possible? And finally, who created it? Drawing mainly on interview evidence and memoirs of former BBC staff it is possible to answer these questions with some precision and to show the broadcasting context (the BBC in the 1960s) in which the conception of Analysis took place. It is not the intention here to describe the specific nature of the program’s account of current affairs or its decidedly right-leaning politics. This is a case study of how two men, George Fischer and Ian McIntyre, saw their opportunity to buck the populist trend in radio and impose their conservative and Reithian broadcasting values in this elitist experiment in current affairs radio.
