While the foundation of Cascais dates to the 12th century, it did not become a desirable resort location until the 19th or 20th centuries, when royalty began to frequent the village. Now it is a popular site for beach- goers and tourists who are interested in Portuguese history. Just a train ride away from Lisbon, this site features tiny, shop-lined side streets; cobblestone roads; several parks; and local bars and restaurants. While you're here, visit the area's art and sea museum, as well as the ruins of the Castle of Cascais. Sintra Sintra is both a town and a municipality in Portugal, located in the district of Lisbon. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its 19th century Romantic architecture. Sintra has become a major tourist attraction, with many day-trippers visiting from nearby Lisbon. For information, please contact Deloitte Consultores SA Cascais City Guide 8 Walk in Cascais The Cascais-Estoril promenade walk The Cascais-Estoril promenade is an enjoyable 3km walk that extends from fishing town of Cascais to the small village of Sao Joao do Estoril. The route follows the sea walls and sea defences that line the beaches and rock outcrops of the coastline. The promenade is flat and is suitable to visitors of all ages and abilities. The Estoril promenade passes many of the region’s best beaches and there are many interesting sights, historical buildings and outdoor cafes. This one of the most popular short walks in the Cascais region and it is possible to walk from one train station to another. The western end of the walk is served by Cascais train station while the eastern end is close to the Sao Joao do Estoril train station. Estoril train station is at the halfway point of the walk. The “Cascais to Estoril” section of the promenade is the most popular and has more cafes, restaurants and shops than the “Estoril to Sao Joao do Estoril” section. The sea defences (and the promenade) finish at the Praia da Azarujinha beach, in Sao Joao do Estoril. From this beach to the train station there are steep steps which climb the cliff face, for a flat ramp access leave the promenade at the Praia da Poça beach. Sao Joao do Estoril is in the same train fare zone as Cascais, so there is no need to purchase a separate ticket for the return journey. Cascais train station is close to the Praia da Duquesa beach but it is more enjoyable to continue into Cascais town centre. To extend the walk visit the pretty gardens in front of the Estoril Casino. The casino is directly behind Estoril train station at the Praia do Tamariz beach. For information, please contact Deloitte Consultores SA Cascais City Guide 9 Walk in Cascais Cycle ride to Guincho beach from Cascais The bike ride from Cascais to the stunning, surfing beach of Praia de Guincho follows a purpose built cycle path and the 10km round trip is an enjoyable half day tourist activity. The route follows the dramatic cliff coastline and passes multiple interesting sights. Guincho beach is a vast sandy beach that faces the might of the Atlantic Ocean, the huge waves are great for surfing while the near constant breeze is ideal for kite surfing. The beach is situated on the edge of the Serra de Sintra National Park, which has enabled the region to maintain its unpreserved, natural beauty. Cycling is one of the best ways to travel to Guincho beach, as there is only a limited bus service from Cascais and taxi fares are expensive. Most visitors to Guincho drive but it can be difficult to find a parking space during the summer. The cycle path follows the main coastal road (the N247) but cyclists can follow a separate path. This enables tourists to take it at their own pace and enjoy the views. The route closely follows the coastline and there are some gentle but long inclines along the way. The route is relatively easy but the main challenge is the heat in peak seasons. Make sure to stop at one of the plentiful cafes, viewpoints and free water fountains along the way. The city has almost 550 000 inhabitants, but in the metropolitan area you have 2,6 million people. In 1147, D. Afonso Henriques and the army of Crusades managed to win the city from the Mouros. The king of Portugal ordered the construction of the Castle of São Jorge. In the 15th century, Portugal ventured into the discoveries, giving beginning to the Renaissance. It was from the river Tagus that the Armies that would come to discover the world, making Portugal the richest country in Europe. Some monuments had been constructed to eternalize the Portuguese Discoveries, being the Torre de Belém (Tower of Belém) and Mosteiro de Jerónimos (Monastery of Jerónimos) the most emblematic ones. With the 1755 earthquake, the City of Lisbon was almost totally destroyed. Marquês de Pombal, the Prime-Minister of King D. José, reconstructed the city. The buildings and squares of downtown Lisbon still prevail, being one of Lisbon’s tourist attractions, such as Terreiro do Paço. 4 Although the 1755 earthquake destroyed most of the city, some of Lisbon’s traditional districts survived.

Sintra Natioanal Palace The gothic styled Palácio Nacional de Sintra is situated in the heart of Sintra and was the most lived in royal residence, being continual used from the 15th century up until the fall of the monarchy in 1910. This is the palace that king Afonso VI (1650s) was imprisoned during his later life, as he was deemed, by his brother, too unstable to rule the country. The minimalistic gothic exterior is dominated by the two huge chimneys that rise out from the kitchens while the interior includes decoratively painted rooms that reflect the extensive history of the palace. The most famous of these rooms is the magpie room, which has paintings of magpies representing the gossiping and scheming of the queen’s ladies in-waiting. As the National Palace is in the centre of town it is usually combined with exploring the historic centre of Sintra with its numerous cafes, restaurants and shops.     Regional Dynamics and Social Diversity – Portugal in the 21st Century Teresa Ferreira Rodrigues Introduction hrough its history Portugal always presented regional differences concerning population distribution, as well as fertility and mortality trends. Local T specificities related to life and death levels reflect diverse socioeconomic conditions and also different health coverage. We will try to diagnose the main concerns and future challenges related to those regional differences, using quantitative and qualitative data on demographic trends, well-being average levels and health services offer. We want to demonstrate that this kind of academic researches can be useful to policy makers, helping them: (1) to implement regional directed policies; (2) to reduce internal diversity; and (3) to improve quality of life in the most excluded areas. Our first issue consists in measuring the link between Portuguese modernization and asymmetries on social well-being levels1. Today Portugal faces some modera- tion on population growth rates, a total dependency on migration rates, both exter- nal and internal, as well as aged structures. But national average numbers are totally different from those at a regional level, mainly if using non demographic indicators, such as average living patterns or purchase power2. The paper begins with a short diagnosis on the huge demographic and socioeco- nomic changes of the last decades. In the second part we analyze the extent of the link between those changes and regional convergence on well-being levels. Finally, we try to determine the extent of regional contrasts, their main causes and the rela- tionship between social change and local average wealth standards, as well as the main problems and challenges that will be under discussion in the years to come, in what concerns to health policies.
