Miracles in Greco-Roman Antiquity: a Sourcebook/Wendy Cotter
MIRACLES IN GRECO-ROMAN ANTIQUITY Miracles in Greco-Roman Antiquity is a sourcebook which presents a concise selection of key miracle stories from the Greco- Roman world, together with contextualizing texts from ancient authors as well as footnotes and commentary by the author herself. The sourcebook is organized into four parts that deal with the main miracle story types and magic: Gods and Heroes who Heal and Raise the Dead, Exorcists and Exorcisms, Gods and Heroes who Control Nature, and Magic and Miracle. Two appendixes add richness to the contextualization of the collection: Diseases and Doctors features ancient authors’ medical diagnoses, prognoses and treatments for the most common diseases cured in healing miracles; Jesus, Torah and Miracles selects pertinent texts from the Old Testament and Mishnah necessary for the understanding of certain Jesus miracles. This collection of texts not only provides evidence of the types of miracle stories most popular in the Greco-Roman world, but even more importantly assists in their interpretation. The contextualizing texts enable the student to reconstruct a set of meanings available to the ordinary Greco-Roman, and to study and compare the forms of miracle narrative across the whole spectrum of antique culture. Self-authorization and Strategies of Autography in John Tzetzes: The Logismoi Rediscovered Aglae Pizzone HEN IN 1948 CARL WENDEL wrote the Real- encyclopädie entry on John Tzetzes’ life and work (still the most comprehensive survey to date), he intro- W 1 duced a section devoted to the author’s “lost works.” The list included only three items: a paraphrasis of Ptolemy’s Geography, alluded to in the Historiai (11.396.884–997), an iambic poem on a representation of the sky in the palace of Chosroes, men- tioned in the same work (3.66.58–67), and the Logismoi, which are the focus of the present paper. Tzetzes mentions the Logismoi on several occasions through- out his works.2 The first reference is in the Commentary on Hermogenes, in the section devoted to the Περὶ µεθόδου δεινότη- τος.3 They are again explicitly recalled in the Historiai as well as 1 C. From the homosocial to the heterosocial: Societal development in Argonautica 4 T.H.M. Gellar (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) The epic of Apollonius is concerned with issues of Greek identity and Hellenistic cultural reproduc- tion. In the fourth book of the Argonautica, as I will argue, Apollonius explores these issues in a previ- ously unnoticed way, by depicting the development of a Hellenic society, complete with foundational sac- rifice and civic rituals. One marker of this new society is the relationships between the previously male- only Argonauts and the shipmates brought aboard in Book 4, Medea and her handmaids. Work on Apollonius has not previously focused on the complex of homosocial and heterosocial inter- actions in his epic. Scholarship on colonialist features of Alexandrian literature (Stephens 2003) and on homosociality in classical literature (Rabinowitz and Auanger 2002, King 2006) form an important back- ground to my argument. My goal is to provide a new reading of Book 4 that uncovers its transformation of the Argonauts from homosocial band to a functioning microcosm of Greek society. Apollonius initially constructs his Argonauts as an all-male crew, a Männerbund (for the concept, see recently Bremmer 1990). He specifically excludes Atalanta from the journey because desire for her could cause strife among the heroes (1.769–773). In the first book, therefore, from the journey’s inception to the end of Jason’s contest against Aeetes, the Argonauts function as a homosocial group, mostly separate from interactions with women. The major exception to this assessment is the episode of the Lemnian women (1.608–910); but this episode is aberrant and impermanent, and it takes place away from the ship, whose all-male society is maintained by Heracles and the other sailors with him. -

1 The reappearance of sapphic fragments in the Italian Renaissance 2 3 4 In this article the survival of the sapphic fragments of the ancient times in Renaissance period is 5 examined. More specifically the reappearance of the sapphic verses is presented concerning the first 6 publications (editio princeps) and the most widespread texts of ancient authors during West 7 Renaissance. These texts were the primary sources, on which the later publications of the sapphic 8 work were based, while they also had a great influence on the reception of the ancient poet by the 9 Renaissance writers. 10 11 Key words: classical tradition in the Italian Renaissance; reception of Sappho; survival of the 12 sapphic poetry during the Renaissance 13 14 Introduction: In ancient times, Sappho's poetry was an object of admiration, and many ancient 15 sources refer to her as the Tenth Muse (Hallett 1979: 447) or ‘the poetess’, as Homer was ‘the poet’ 16 (Parker 1993: 312). Also, the Alexandrian grammarians included Sappho in the canon of the nine 17 lyric poets (ibid: 340). It seems, however, that already in the 9th century A.D. the poems of Sappho 18 have been disappeared: around 1550, Jerome Cardan reports that Gregory of Nazianzus had 19 publicly destroyed Sappho's works, while at the end of the 16th century, Joseph Justus Scaliger 20 claims that her poems were burnt in Rome and Constantinople in 1073 by order of Pope Gregory 21 VII (Reynolds 2001: 81). Similar information is also recorded by other writers1. In fact, Sappho's 22 works were probably lost since people stopped to copy them in the period that the parchment 23 replaced the papyrus (ibid: 18). -

The aim of this paper is to analyze the different varia- tions and the most predominant versions of the myth of the Amazons and to present the basic mythological references of these wild warriors. Additionally, the individual mythological facts are described and the most famous figures of the Amazons are high- lighted. The individual characteristics that are presented bring into negotiation the dif- ferent aspects concerning the social, cultural and historical dimensions of the myth. This paper searches the reasons why this myth was created and why it became part of the Greek mythology and determines the value of the myth in general. It also presents clearly both the mythological status of the Amazons based on literary sources and the particular features of their existence in a wider context. On a second level, the figure of the Amazons is approached as a social and political phenomenon of the classical pe- riod and especially of the Athenian society. It examines the contribution of the social stereotypes of the era to the formation of the myth and the relationship with the xen- ophobic climate against the Persians. -
