Department of Technology Management Undergraduate Scholarship Information

Application Process: The following application must be completed in order to be eligible for scholarships in the Department of Technology Management. A list of scholarships and scholarship information can be obtained from the Department of Technology Management (TMGT) web site (http://www.indstate.edu/tm//). All application materials must be computer generated on the forms located on the TMGT website. You may add additional rows to the application or attach additional electronic documentation if necessary or desired. Please deliver/mail your completed (hard copy only) application by January 29th to: Judy Elslager, College of Technology, State University, TC 302, Terre Haute, IN 47809. Late and/or electronic copies of the application will not be accepted.

Scholarship Name: Harry T. Barrick Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Major within the Technology Management Department Description: This scholarship was established by contributions by students, alumni, colleagues, and friends of Harry T. Barrick upon the occasion of his retirement from ISU School of Technology faculty in 1977 after 31 years of service. Additional contributions to the scholarship fund have been made by Mr. and Mrs. Barrick and others. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Candidate should be a regularly enrolled student (man or woman) at and should be majoring in some field in the school of technology • The candidate should be a resident of Indiana

Scholarship Name: M. Dale McConchie Memorial Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Major within the Technology Management Department Description: M. Dale McConchie was an associate professor in the College of Technology in the area of Printing Management until his untimely death in 1995. Friends, family, and students of Mr. McConchie’s established an endowed scholarship fund in his name. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• A deserving junior or senior student in the Department Technology Management. • 3.0 GPA • Demonstrated leadership abilities through service to the school (on campus and/or in the classroom)

Scholarship Name: The Robert C. Schacht Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Major within the Technology Management Department Description: The family of Robert C. Schacht established an endowed scholarship fund to be administered by Indiana State University. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

Scholarship Name: William E. James Memorial Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Major within the Technology Management Department Description: The William E. James Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. James, a retired professor and chairperson of the ISU Department of Manufacturing and Construction Technology. Dr. James earned degrees from , , and the Indiana University. His career included tenures at the Delco Remy division of General Motors and the Anderson Public Schools prior to joining the faculty at Indiana State University in 1962. He retired in 1984. He was active in numerous professional organizations and was instrumental in writing and publishing several books. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• ISU students majoring in the department of Manufacturing and Construction Technology. • Students must have completed freshman year and must have demonstrated outstanding academic performance

Scholarship Name: Kenneth and Zorah (Atkins) Syphax – Rapid Reproductions, Inc. Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Major within the Technology Management Department Description: Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to an Indiana State university student(s). Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• A full‐time Indiana State University student in the ISU College of Technology with a declared major in Advanced Manufacturing Management, Construction Technology, Packaging Technology, Human Resource Development, Technology and Engineering Education or Career and Technical Education. • Sophomore – senior rank • U. S. Citizen – preference to Indiana residents • Must be enrolled in the semester which the scholarship is issued and • Posses a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

Scholarship Name: Thelma F. Mills Work Study Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Major within the Technology Management Department Description: The Thelma F. Mills Work Study Scholarship Fund was given by Ms. Mills in sacred memory of her parents, J. Edward and Lillie and her brother E. Lenley Mills. Ms. Mills received a B.S. degree in 1932 and a M.A. in 1955 from ISU. She began her teaching career at the high school level, where she continued for 4 years. In 1941 she moved to Elwood, Indiana, where she began teaching in the primary grades, which she continued to do until her retirement in 1974. In addition to her commitment to teaching, Ms. Mills was dedicated to the idea of establishing a fund, and spend many years negotiating the details, which would assist worthy students engage in meaningful work experience as they earn a degree at ISU. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• An undergraduate student engaged in a meaningful work experience related to their vocational/professional objectives which does not average more than 20 hours per week during academic year. • Recipients making adequate progress towards a specific degree will remain annually eligible.

2 Department of Technology Management Scholarship Information Scholarship Name: John Charles Fauber Memorial Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Advanced Manufacturing Management, Packaging Technology, and Construction Technology Description: The John Charles Fauber Memorial Scholarship establishes an endowed educational fund to be administered by the Indiana State University Foundation, Terre Haute, Indiana, for the benefit of a student, or students, enrolled in Indiana State University. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• The recipient must be a graduate of a high school in Vigo county or an adjacent county in Indiana or Illinois • The recipient must have graduated in the upper 50% of his or her graduating class • The recipient must enroll or be enrolled (for previous year recipients) in the School of Technology at Indiana State university in one of the following non‐teaching technology curriculums: Architectural Technology, Construction Technology, Advanced Manufacturing Management, or Packaging Technology.

Scholarship Name: Clarence E. and Maxine M. Chambers Fauber Scholarship Eligible Major (s): Advanced Manufacturing Management Description: The Clarence E. and Maxine M. Chambers Fauber Scholarship fund comprises two undergraduate awards to be made each year. One award goes to a sophomore and one award to a Junior. The awards are to be presented each spring at the Honors Day Convocation with the stipends available the following summer or fall semester. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Each recipient will be a major in Advanced Manufacturing Management • Each Recipient will have at least 3.0 cumulative GPA during the semester in which they are selected • Each recipient will have demonstrated leadership and participation in extracircular on‐campus activities including, but not limited to, sports, student government, sports support (cheerleading, Sparkettes, etc.), band, and fraternity/ sorority leadership. Special emphasis will be placed on professionally‐related activities such as Society of Manufacturing Engineers, American Society of Quality Control, etc.

Scholarship Name: Robert M. Smith Endowed Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Technology and Engineering Education, Career and Technical Education and Human Resource Development Description: Mary M. Smith established an endowed scholarship fund to be administered by Indiana State University. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Undergraduate students pursuing their major in Technology and Engineering Education, Career and Technical Education or Human Resource Development • Demonstrated financial need • Applied themselves academically and are sincere in their academic endeavors

Hamilton Scholarship in Technology Eligible Major (s): Technology and Engineering Education or Career and Technical Education Description: The Allen T. Hamilton Scholarship in technology was established through a generous bequest in the will of Florence B. Hamilton. It was Mrs. Hamilton’s wish to provide financial assistance for Indiana State University students in their junior year and in the upper ¼ of their class who have declared a major in the field of Career and Technical Education and Technology and Engineering Education in the College of Technology. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Placed in the upper ¼ of Junior class • Majoring in the field of Career and Technical and Technology and Engineering Education at ISU

Scholarship Name: Harry E. Smith Memorial Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Technology and Engineering Education Description: The Harry E. Smith Scholarship Fund in Technology and Engineering Education is established at Indiana State University under terms of a bequest to the ISU foundation by the late Harry E. Smith. Mr. Smith, a native of Washington, Indiana, and a 1933 graduate of Indiana State University, taught technology and engineering education several years and later was employed by the New York Central Rail Road. At the time of his death, November 11, 1969, he was a resident of East St. Louis, Illinois. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be a graduate of Washington High School, Washington, Indiana. If no student is available from Washington High School the award may go to an existing Technology and Engineering Education Student • Be attending or planning to attend Indiana State University • Be enrolled or planning to enroll as a full‐time student majoring in Technology and Engineering Education at ISU. • Be of high moral character • Have a need for financial aid in pursuing his or her education

Scholarship Name: Sylvan A. Yager Industrial Educational Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Technology and Engineering Education Description: The Sylvan A. Yager Industrial Education Scholarship was established from the contributions of former students, friends, and colleagues of Professor Yager to honor him on his retirement in 1962, following 41 years of devoted association with Indiana State University and the ISU Technology and Engineering Education Area. Professor Yager was a nationally known educator who inspired and developed one of the nation’s outstanding Technology and Engineering Education at Indiana State University. He died in 1970 at age of 74. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Must be enrolled full‐time in the classes during the semester for which scholarship is designated in order to qualify for the award.

4 Department of Technology Management Scholarship Information Scholarship Name: Braxton H. Duvall Memorial Scholarship Eligible Major (s): Technology and Engineering Education Description: The Braxton H. Duvall Memorial Scholarship in Technology and Engineering Education at Indiana State University has been established to aid full‐time Technology and Engineering Education Majors. Mr. Duvall was originally from the state of Virginia. He completed his under graduate work from the Eastern Kentucky University, served for four years in the United States Army, and completed graduate work at Indiana State University. For the last thirty‐four years of his life he taught girls and boys in Indiana schools. He was one of the first in his field to include girls in Technology and Engineering Education. This dedicated educator shared his expertise with nursery school, elementary and high school pupils, with University students and colleagues. At the time of his death, April twenty‐fifth, nineteen hundred and eighty, he was completing twenty‐five years at the University school (formerly Laboratory school) of Indiana State University.

• Full‐time Technology and Engineering Education Major at Indiana State • Top one‐third of high school senior class • Recommendation from high school faculty or principal – high moral character • Personal interview by department committee if necessary • Scholarship will be for one academic year unless the recipient loses his or her eligibility through withdrawal or dismissal. If the recipient continues in good standing with the University, the scholarship may be renewed up to three academic years.

Scholarship Name: John K. Jones Memorial Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Technology and Engineering Education Students Description: Mr. Jones was born on a farm near Arcola, Illinois in 1900 and passed away in 1964. He was a printer by trade and was both an artisan and artist at that trade. Throughout his lifetime he had a deep love for farms and farming. He felt keenly the need of a college education and was generous in helping others to attend in the area of Technology and Engineering Education. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Sophomore enrolled in the Technology and Engineering Education Program

Scholarship Name: Lanny Turner Memorial Award Eligible Major(s): Technology and Engineering Education Students Description: Consideration for Lanny Turner Memorial Award shall be given to an Indiana State University student(s) who meets the following criteria:

• Recipient must be a worthy student with a declared interest in teacher preparation in the College of Technology • Recipient should show evidence of good scholarly record with above average grades • Recipient must demonstrate an enthusiasm for learning and show a promise as a teacher • First preference will be given to students pursuing a major in Technology and Engineering Education

5 Department of Technology Management Scholarship Information Scholarship Name: Lester W. Hale Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Technology and Engineering Education Students Description: The Lester W. Hale Vocational‐Trade and Industrial Student Professional Development Fund has been established to honor Dr. Hale at his retirement from active portion of his dedicated professional career.

Dr. Lester Wayne Hale, professor, Department of Industrial‐Technology Education, came to Indiana State University in 1960. Dr. Hale received his D.Ed. in 1967 from Indiana University, His Master of Science Degree from Purdue University in 1946, and his Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana State University in 1938.

Dr. Hale has a long and distinguished professional service career dedicated to vocational‐technical education. He has been one of the prime figures in promoting and advancing the Vocational Machine Trades Contest, started in 1961. This contest serves to promote excellence, pride and competition for numerous high school students . He has also served to advance the technical knowledge of many vocational teachers through the Trade and Technical Workshops. These workshops are unique in profession and serve to bridge the gap for teacher between the industry and the classroom. Indiana State university has become an institution recognized across the State because of these efforts.

Dr. Hale has been recipient of many awards over his years of service, among them being the “Outstanding Vocational Educator Award” by the Indiana Vocational Association presented in 1974. He has several awards established in his name and will have Dr. Lester Hale Foundation Award developed in his name over the coming years. The purpose of this award being to promote persons in vocational‐ technical education to earn teaching degrees from Indiana State University.

The profession is deeply indebted to Dr. Hale for his continuous and dedicated support. This dedication to the profession deserves recognition for his role as constant supporter of the teacher who needs help of a friend, colleague, and professor. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Indiana State University students on a Career and Technical Education and Technology and Engineering Education degree program

6 Department of Technology Management Scholarship Information Scholarship Name: The R. Paul Lightle Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Technology and Engineering Education Students Description: The R. Paul Lightle Scholarship was established in 1985 for students in the professional education program in the School of Technology at Indiana State University.

R. Paul Lightle, a 1934 ISU graduate with the B.S. degree in Industrial Arts Education, is a native of Park County, matriculating from Montezuma High School. Lightle earned his M.S. in Education from Indiana State University and holds additional graduate hours from the university of Missouri, Ball State University, and Indiana University.

Lightle’s professional career spanned 39 years of teaching and development minds and skills of Industrial Arts and in Technical Education. He taught for 21 years in the Lebanon, Westfield, and Fort Wayne community schools followed by 12 years as Training Superintendent with the Arabian Oil Company in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The last six years of his professional career he returned to his alma matter as an Assistant Professor in the ISU School of Technology.R. Paul and his wife, Agnes Stanley Lightle, were married in 1938. They have two children, Mary Alice and Paul Stanley.

Lightle served as president of Indiana Industrial Education Association in 1954, and received the Outstanding Alumni Award in 1975 from Montezuma high school in recognition of his achievement as a professional educator. He authored a textbook, “Blueprint Reading and Texting”, McMillan Publishing Company, New York. He is a member of Epsilon Pi Tau and Phi Delta Kappa, national honor societies in education.

Now retired in Fort Wayne, the Lightle’s are world travelers with a proud, continuing interest in Technology and Engineering Education and Indiana State University. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• The recipients shall be Indiana State University students enrolled in the School of Technology and are preparing for a teaching career • The recipients should demonstrate a financial need and be working to assist themselves financially • They should have completed at least 60 hours towards a baccalaureate degree • It is preferred that the recipients be graduates of high schools located in either Parke, Fountain, or Allen counties in Indiana • The scholarship may be renewed for one year

Scholarship Application Process: All applications for scholarships through the College of Technology and Dean’s office should be submitted in hard copy to Mr. Rob Eberwien in TC 101 by January 29th—late applications will not be accepted. Application materials for Dean’s scholarships and scholarships in the Department of Technology Management are identical—scholarship applications can be obtained from the Department of Technology Management (TMGT) web site (http://www.indstate.edu/tm//). All scholarships will be awarded during the spring semester and be available for use following fall semester. All award winners will be contacted no later April 1 through the mailing address they supply on the application materials.

Scholarship Name: Deans Promising Leader Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Major within the Technology Management Department Description: The Dean’s Promising Leader Scholarship was established in 2000 to provide financial assistance to Indiana State University students who are enrolled full time in a degree program at School of Technology, who manifest exemplary leadership and promise within their chosen discipline. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Must be enrolled in the semester which the scholarship is issued and • Posses a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Scholarship Name: Piping Industry Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Major within the College of Technology Description: The Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local Union #157 and the Wabash Valley Mechanical Contractors Association establish a fund to be administered by the Indiana State University, for the benefit of a worthy student, or students, enrolled at Indiana State University. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Recipients must have chosen a major area of study in the College of Technology and are members of the MCA student chapter if one exists • Recipients must be a member or dependent of a member of the Plumbers & Steam Fitters Local Union #157, or the Wabash Valley Mechanical Contractors Association. (If no applications are available from this group this group, then the scholarship is open to all students in the College of Technology) • Recipients must have successfully completed one semester and must have demonstrated academic ability • Awards must be made on the basis of Achievement

Scholarship Name: GTE College of Technology Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Major within the College of Technology Description: This scholarship is awarded by the dean’s office to a deserving College of Technology student who has demonstrated exemplary character and has accomplished much within their major. The receiving student mush have set themselves apart from other students in their ability to lead others while showing great promise of excelling to new heights in their endeavors.

Scholarship Name: Epsilon Pi Tau Chester G. Taylor Scholarship Eligible Major(s): Any Undergraduate EPT Member in the College of Technology Description: Since 1929, Epsilon Pi Tau has been an Honorary Professional Fraternity in Industrial Arts and Vocational Technical Education. Mu Chapter at Indiana State University was founded in 1934, and has promoted, along with International Organization, the professional status of Industrial Arts. Mu Chapter has also sought to recognize its individual members who have fulfilled the percepts and ideals of Epsilon Pi Tau.

1. Improve their skills and competences in Technology 2. Improve themselves socially and professionally 3. And engage in and support publication and research with the highest professional and scholarly standards

The membership of Mu Chapter, Epsilon Pi Tau believes that Chester G. Taylor, Director of Vocational/Technical Education, Monroe County Community School Corporation, Bloomington, Indiana, has exhibited the percepts and ideals of the fraternity, therefore is worthy of the scholarship name. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Must be enrolled in the semester which the scholarship is issued and • Posses a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. • Member of Epsilon Pi Tau at Indiana State University • Showing outstanding achievement in a Technological field
