    A Light in the Darkness: FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE’S LEGACY Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of nursing, was born on May 12, 1820. In celebration of her 200th birthday, the World Health Organization declared 2020 the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife.” It's now clear that nurses and health care providers of all kinds face extraordinary circumstances this year. Nightingale had a lasting influence on patient care that's apparent even today. Nightingale earned the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp” because she checked on patients at night, which was rare at the time and especially rare for head nurses to do. COURTESY OF THE WELLCOME COLLECTION When Florence Nightingale was growing up in England in the early 19th century, nursing was not yet a respected profession. It was a trade that involved little training. Women from upper-class families like hers were not expected to handle strangers’ bodily functions. She defied her family because she saw nursing as a calling. Beginning in 1854, Nightingale led a team of nurses in the Crimean War, stationed in present-day Turkey. She saw that the overcrowded, stuffy hospital with an overwhelmed sewer system was leading to high death rates. She wrote to newspapers back home, inspiring the construction of a new hospital. It is not meant to be inclusive of all historical events. 1872: New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston admits first nursing class 1873: Boston Training School for Nurses opens in Boston New England Hospital for Women and Children graduates “America’s First Trained Nurse”, Linda Richards 1879: Mary Eliza Mahoney, America’s first black nurse graduates from the New England Hospital for Women and Children 1886: Visiting Nurses Association of Boston established Psychiatric Nurse training begins at McLean Hospital 1904: An Act to Regulate the Practice of Professional Nursing of the Sick filed with Massachusetts State Legislature 1910: The Massachusetts Board of Registration is created by law effective October, 1910; composition includes three nurses, the secretary of the Board of Registration in Medicine and the physician superintendent of a hospital training school for nurses. Law authorizes licensure by examination of Registered Nurses only. To qualify, applicant must be at least 21 years of age and of good moral character. Fee is $5.00. Licensure examination waived for Massachusetts residents who apply for licensure within one year and who can prove he or she has engaged for five years in competent care of the sick or who has such experience in a hospital or training school.     Education Aci Title I; ESEA Title I ABSTRACT This manual contains selected materials and ideas generated during the multicultural program implementationat Fremont Elementary School in 1974-75 which vas funded under ESEATitle I. The program included:(1) the consecutive concentrated study of five individual cultures and (2) a comparative multicultural approach built around five basic themes. While it isbelieved that it is essential to develop positive self-concept and intergrouprelations, multicultural awareness is seen as necessary to understand the different human experiences of people who come from different cultures and ethnic groups. In the school, multicultural awareness vas attained through implementationof the following areas: cultural curricula, multicultural curricula; curriculum based onclassroom cultural and ethnic population; integration of multicultural awareness into basic subject areas ofmath, reading, language; and chronological recognition of events and holidays across cultural lines.
