We will continue to be involved in events the editor: and exhibitions as the celebrations progress over the next few months. Dianne Yarwood The centenary launch event took place on 12 January and RCN Chief Executive Janet Davies and President Cecilia Anim said how much they were looking forward to the events of the year ahead. A marching banner, made by members of the Townswomen’s Guilds, was presented to the College (see p2). The banner will be taken to key RCN events this year, including Congress, before going on permanent display in reception at RCN headquarters in London. The launch event also saw the unveiling of the RCN presidents’ exhibition, which features photographs of each president and short biographical extracts outlining their contributions to the College (see p5). There was much interest in the new major exhibition in the RCN Library and Heritage Centre. The Voice of Nursing explores how nursing has changed over the past 100 years by drawing on stories and experiences of members and items and artefacts from the RCN archives. -

Nurses may be differentiated from other health care providers by their approach to patient care, training, and scope of practice. Nurses practice in a wide diversity of practice areas with a different scope of practice and level of prescriber authority in each. Many nurses provide care within the ordering scope of physicians, and this traditional role has come to shape the historic public image of nurses as care providers. However, nurses are permitted by most jurisdictions to practice independently in a variety of settings depending on training level. In the postwar period, nurse education has undergone a process of diversification towards advanced and specialized credentials, and many of the traditional regulations and provider roles are changing. Nurses develop a plan of care, working collaboratively with physicians, therapists, the patient, the patient's family and other team members, that focuses on treating illness to improve quality of life. In the U.S. (and increasingly the United Kingdom), advanced practice nurses, such as clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners, diagnose health problems and prescribe medications and other therapies, depending on individual state regulations. -

What kind of working resources E.T nurses have in Finland? Methods: E.T courses have been arranged in Finland since 1982. In the end of 2005 there will be total 120 educated E.T nurses working in hospitals and homecare. Is it enough? The model of education has changed during these years, but it has been all the time accepted in WCET and has followed its guidelines. The length of the education has been 400 hours with head topics: stoma care, wounds, fistulas, continence care. How to get more focused education to all nurses? Conclusions: The ETNEP –programme in Finland will change in the future because of increasing education of Urotherapists, Woudcare nurses and Gastroenterological therapists. The different therapist croups begin to co- operate more and priorize their know-how. -

WHO WE ARE DEAN’S WELCOME Dear friends, This month I took part in my fifth year of graduation and commencement ceremonies at NYU as dean. What an excit- ing time! To see students work so hard and then finally walk across the stage to receive their diplomas, and, for many, enter a new stage in their lives, is the highlight of my year. We have prepared our recent graduates to become leaders at a critical moment in healthcare—a time to reimagine how best to deliver high-quality, affordable care. As nurses, we are uniquely positioned to develop and implement the inno- vation required to tackle this challenge, and more broadly, the world’s most pressing issues like poverty, mental health, climate change, chronic illness, substance abuse, and the effects of an aging population. A Light in the Darkness: Florence Nightingale's Legacy
A Light in the Darkness: FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE’S LEGACY Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of nursing, was born on May 12, 1820. In celebration of her 200th birthday, the World Health Organization declared 2020 the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife.” It's now clear that nurses and health care providers of all kinds face extraordinary circumstances this year. Nightingale had a lasting influence on patient care that's apparent even today. Nightingale earned the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp” because she checked on patients at night, which was rare at the time and especially rare for head nurses to do. COURTESY OF THE WELLCOME COLLECTION When Florence Nightingale was growing up in England in the early 19th century, nursing was not yet a respected profession. It was a trade that involved little training. Women from upper-class families like hers were not expected to handle strangers’ bodily functions. She defied her family because she saw nursing as a calling. Beginning in 1854, Nightingale led a team of nurses in the Crimean War, stationed in present-day Turkey. She saw that the overcrowded, stuffy hospital with an overwhelmed sewer system was leading to high death rates. She wrote to newspapers back home, inspiring the construction of a new hospital. Edith Cavell Fact Sheet Edith Cavell (1865-1915) was a British nurse working in Belgium who was executed By the Germans on a charge of assisting British and French prisoners to escape during the First World War. Born on 4 DecemBer 1865 in Norfolk, Cavell started nursing aged 20. After many nursing joBs Cavell moved to Beligum and was appointed matron of the Berkendael Medical Institute in 1907. At the start of the First World War in 1914 and the following German occupation of Belgium, Cavell joined the Red Cross supporting the nursing effort and the The Berkendael Institute, where Cavell was matron, was converted into a hospital for wounded soldiers of all nationalities. Soldiers who were treated at Berkendael afterwards succeeded in escaping with Cavell’s active assistance to neutral Holland. After Being Betrayed, Cavell was arrested on 5 August 1915 By local German authorities and charged with personally aiding the escape of some 200 soldiers. Once arrested, Cavell was kept in solitary confinement for nine weeks where the German forces successfully took a confession from Cavell which formed the Basis of her trial. Cavell along with a named Belgian accomplice Philippe Baucq, were pronounced guilty and sentenced to death By German firing squad. The sentence was carried out on 12 OctoBer 1915 without reference to the German high command. Cavell’s case received significant sympathetic worldwide press coverage and propaganda, most notably in Britain and the then-neutral United States. In the weeks after Cavell’s death the numBer of young men enlisting to serve in the First World War significantly increased. -

A deeper understanding of their motivation, career paths, and job satisfaction is needed to target recruitment and retention efforts. Currently the largest male cohort entering nursing is by second career. This study examines if job satisfaction differs for men who choose nursing as their first choice of career, as a convenience after exploring other options, or as a second career. Methods: This mixed-method study examined the relationship between men entering nursing by choice, convenience or second career and their resultant job satisfaction. A convenience sample of 238 men answered an online survey. Entry path, current practice position, and future career plans in five years was by self report. Job satisfaction was measured using Lester’s instrument.
