Nyíregyháza Our firm was established in 1996 in the city of Nyíregyháza, eastern . Our main activity is environmental engineering. We work in the fields of water management, waste management and utilization of renewable energy sources as well as we prepare related national and international tenders. During our work we built very good relations with local municipalities, authorities, universities and companies. We have good connections on international level as well.

The works of the Bio-Genezis Ltd. consist mainly (80 %) of design and planning of public utility infrastructure and providing consultancy for local governments.

At the beginning of the ’90s, major facilities of the -Szatmár-Bereg County drinking water program were designed and constructed by Bio-Genezis Ltd. Similar works in the neighboring Hajdú-Bihar County have been carried out as well. As a result, 100 000 people are supplied with safe drinking water through facilities designed and built by the firm.

At the next stage, the company started to expand into another field by planning of sewer systems and sewage treatment plants. As a result of this work, facilities designed by Bio- Genezis Ltd. are treating the sewage of 80 000 people.

The first regional landfill site of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, the Southern Nyírség Regional Landfill Site has been designed by the company as well. This site provides the facilities for the safe disposal of MSW from 30 000 people. The assignment also included the closing plans of the former municipal landfill sites of the 8 associated settlements.

Our largest restoration job was the remediation of a site polluted by the Alkaloida Chemical Plant (pharmaceuticals) at , where 500 000 tons of hazardous waste has been disposed mixed with the MSW of the town. The hazardous waste contaminated about 2 million tons of soil. By planning and carrying out this remediation work, our employees gained a considerable experience in the design and implementation of landfill restoration and soil remediation projects.

In 2004 we planned the majority of the facilities of the Municipal Solid Waste Management Program in Hajdú-Bihar County. Facilities for collection, sorting, composting and disposal of MSW generated by 400 000 people has been designed by us. This development was the first Hungarian environmental project funded by the ISPA program. In this design project and tender preparation, Bio-Genezis successfully co-operated with Carl Bro International.

Our company participated in the preparation of the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Waste Management System (2004) as well as the in planning of the North Balaton Regional Municipal Solid Waste Management System (2011). These two systems provide a solution for the suitable treatment of more than 1 million people's MSW, fulfilling all Hungarian and EU requirements. Both projects were supported by the European Cohesion Fund.

Extending the company's mission to new fields, we became involved in the renewable energy sources, more closely energy recovery from biomass. Biogas and biomass production plants have been designed by the company. In addition, Regional Development Policy for several micro regions and counties, and a national program proposal on the integrated utilization of biodegradable wastes have been elaborated by our company. A large scale centralized biogas plant was built in 2002 according to the plans of the company. It started operation with 2.5 MWe capacity but has been extended to 4.5 MWe capacity by now.

Our company is really aware of the importance of R&D activity. We have good relations with universities in Hungary and abroad as well. We were involved in numerous local and international research projects (Perspective, FP6, FP7) and in local innovation projects as well. Most of these projects were in the field of renewable energy (for example biomass mobilization, fermentation technologies).

Our company was involved in the development of a novel technology which produces energy from waste. We won numerous national and international prizes with this innovative patented technology (Eco-Methanol).

Our company made more than 150 pcs environmental reviews and recultivation plans in the areas of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Hajdú-Bihar Counties according to Act No. 2000. XLIII. and Decree No. 22/2001. (X.10.). Regional Municipal Solid Waste Managment Site in Debrecen was built as part of the Municipal Solid Waste Management System of Hajdú-Bihar County, in the frame of the ISPA project No. 2000/HU/16/P/PE/002.

Preparation Hall

The selectively collected green waste and wood as well as other sorted biodegradable waste are composted. As a first step the incoming organic wastes are shredded in a mobil shredder. Then the shredded waste is mixed with straw and sludge. The mixed material is then composted in 4 enclosed compost vessel. (144 t/d , 50% biodegradable waste - 50% sludge). The material stays in the vessels for 1 week. The material is taken out of the vessel and maturing takes place in windrows in the open air. Enclosed Compost Vessel The windrows are turned by a mobil compost turning machine. The matured compost is screened with a trommel.

MBT Chambers According to the Decree No. Decree 23/2003 (29/12) of the Minister of Environment and Water Management the mixed waste must be treated with mechanical-biological treatment. The organic contents and bio-activity of the MSW to be landfilled is decreased through MBT process.

Capping Layer The lining of drill mud disposal site at Zalatárnok was made in 2003. according to the Decree No. 22/2001. (X.10.) MoE. Our company was the first in Hungary to design a combined recultivation lining equivalent to mineral linings of the relevant decree. Dense mineral lining is difficult to make. It can be replaced by one layer of Bentofix NSP 4900 sealer. Because of its excellent flexibility the Bentofix is perfect for uneven surfaces. Carbofol HDPE Lining and Bentofix

A 2,5mm thick HDPE layer comes on the Bentofix lining and jointed with double welding technology and tested with compression test. The drainage is ensured by a plastic Secudran layer. It also ensures mechanical protection for the HDPE layer. The soil cover comes directly on the Secudran.

Project Name : Plans for Remediation of Tiszavasvári Landfill Site (of the former Alkaloida Rt.) Contaminated by Hazardous Waste Place : Tiszavasvári, Hungary. Date of Execution : 1996.-2000. Employer : APV Rt. Builder : Kelet-Speeck Kft. Investment Cost : 1 500 Million HUF Municipal Solid Waste The former ALKALOIDA Chemical Plant generated more than 500 thousand tonnes of hazardous waste throughout its 70 year operation. The hazardous waste used to be stored in a former clay pit near the town. The hazardous waste, which is harmful to human health and to the environment, almost reached vertically the layer where drinking water supply of the town existed. Horizontally it caused soil and ground water pollution over the boundary values on ap. 350 000m2 area.

The tender for remediation was won by KELET- Pool No. 1, Original State SPEECK Ltd. with the plans of Bio-Genezis Ltd. The remediation was carried out in very bad weather conditions. During the works many new methods were applied which were unknown in Hungary so far. The remediation was successful according to the samples of 100pcs monitoring well. The citizents of Tiszavasvári have clean drinking water and clean air now. The good environmental conditions resulted the further development of the town. A new brickwork has been erected recently and it is operating now. A new poultry and a swine slaughterhouse is under construction . Planned View after Remediation

A waterproof cutoff wall filled with bentonite was constucted around the contaminated area with 6m depth and 25cm width. The wall is combined with 1mm HDPE foil. The bottom side of the wall is in the clay-pan with 1,0- 1,5 m but it does not reach the bottom of this clay layer more than 1,0-1,5m. Combinated Cutoff Wall

On the contaminated site, an approximately 40 000m2 pit was filled with industrial sludge. It was impossible to prepare the capping layer because the machines could not work on such surface. That’s why the surface had to be stabilized with geotextile and grids.

This method was applied later on in many other remediations

A hazardous waste landfill was made in the protected Lying Grids on Geotextile area for the ashes originating from the hazardous waste combustion plant.

The capping and bottom layers were prepared according to Decree No. 22/2001 (X.10.) MoE.
