  • Beyond the Bosphorus: the Holy Land in English Reformation Literature, 1516-1596
BEYOND THE BOSPHORUS: THE HOLY LAND IN ENGLISH REFORMATION LITERATURE, 1516-1596 Jerrod Nathan Rosenbaum A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2019 Approved by: Jessica Wolfe Patrick O’Neill Mary Floyd-Wilson Reid Barbour Megan Matchinske ©2019 Jerrod Nathan Rosenbaum ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Jerrod Rosenbaum: Beyond the Bosphorus: The Holy Land in English Reformation Literature, 1516-1596 (Under the direction of Jessica Wolfe) This dissertation examines the concept of the Holy Land, for purposes of Reformation polemics and apologetics, in sixteenth-century English Literature. The dissertation focuses on two central texts that are indicative of two distinct historical moments of the Protestant Reformation in England. Thomas More's Utopia was first published in Latin at Louvain in 1516, roughly one year before the publication of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses signaled the commencement of the Reformation on the Continent and roughly a decade before the Henrician Reformation in England. As a humanist text, Utopia contains themes pertinent to internal Church reform, while simultaneously warning polemicists and ecclesiastics to leave off their paltry squabbles over non-essential religious matters, lest the unity of the Church catholic be imperiled. More's engagement with the Holy Land is influenced by contemporary researches into the languages of that region, most notably the search for the original and perfect language spoken before the episode at Babel. As the confusion of tongues at Babel functions etiologically to account for the origin of all ideological conflict, it was thought that the rediscovery of the prima lingua might resolve all conflict.

The Great Stardust Skim by Stephen Fischer This is such a wonderful American success story. In 1976 the president of the Stardust Hotel was 34-year old Allan Glick. Seemingly out of nowhere, this nice clean-cut young man and head of the ARGENT Corporation secured a Teamsters loan for about $146 million that enabled him to take over the Stardust Hotel and Casino. The ARGENT name was an abbreviation of Allan R. Glick Enterprises. The timing on this loan was very important. ISLAND EMPIRE: THE INFLUENCE OF THE MACEO FAMILY IN GALVESTON Tabitha Nicole Boatman, B.A. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2014 APPROVED: Scott Belshaw, Committee Chair Chad Trulson, Committee Member Richard B. McCaslin, Committee Member Eric Fritsch, Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Thomas Evenson, Dean of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Boatman, Tabitha Nicole. Island Empire: The Influence of the Maceo Family in Galveston. Master of Science (Criminal Justice), August 2014, 127 pp., bibliography, 80 titles. From the 1920s until the 1950s, brothers, Sam and Rosario Maceo, ran an influential crime family in Galveston, Texas. The brothers’ success was largely due to Galveston’s transient population, the turbulent history of the island, and the resulting economic decline experienced at the turn of the 20th century. Their success began during Prohibition, when they opened their first club. The establishment offered bootlegged liquor, fine dining, and first class entertainment. After Prohibition, the brothers continued to build an empire on the island through similar clubs, without much opposition from the locals. However, after being suspected of involvement in a drug smuggling ring, the Maceos were placed under scrutiny from outside law enforcement agencies. Through persistent investigations, the Texas Rangers finally shut down the rackets in Galveston in 1957. Despite their influence through the first half of the 20th century, on the island and off the island, their story is largely missing from the current literature. Copyright 2014 by Tabitha Nicole Boatman ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my deepest appreciation to my thesis committee members, particularly Dr.

  • UNION LOANS: MOB's HOLD on CASINOS by WALLACE
UNION LOANS: MOB'S HOLD ON CASINOS By WALLACE TURNER Published: April 3, 1986 FACEBOOK TWITTER GOOGLE+ EMAIL SHARE PRINT REPRINTS About 10 years ago three mob bosses, Frank Balistrieri of Milwaukee, James Licavoli of Cleveland and Nick Civella of Kansas City, quarreled over the division of money they were illegally reaping from the Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. According to testimony in a recent Federal trial in Kansas City, Mo., they took their dispute for arbitration by Joseph John Aiuppa, the Mafia boss of all bosses in the Middle West. Angelo Lonardo, then Cleveland underboss who in those days was the recipient of up to $10,000 a month in illegally skimmed casino profits, testified about the incident: Q. After this resolution of the dispute between Kansas City and Milwaukee, did Chicago benefit in any manner? A. Yes, they did. Q. How was that? A. They got 25 percent of the money. It was just another routine transaction in organized crime's pervasive influence in Nevada gambling and in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, whose main pension fund served as a virtual bank for the mob. But law- enforcement officials cite its very routineness as a dramatic illustration of the ease with which they say the Mafia asserted control over the casinos and over the retirement funds of hundreds of thousands of laborers. The authorities contended for years that the teamsters were heavily corrupted, but law enforcers say that evidence assembled in recent investigations in Kansas City and elsewhere has provided a much clearer demonstration of the underlying methods of the organized crime network that fed off the teamsters' Central States, Southeast and Southwest Areas Pension Fund.
