Tomáš Polenský Ph.D. ABSTRAKT Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na filmovou tvorbu Martina Scorseseho v žánru gangsterského filmu. Práce se zabývá počátky mafiánských organizací, vývojem tohoto žánru a samotnou tvorbou režiséra. Praktická část práce je zaměřena na analýzu tří mafiánských filmů režiséra Martina Scorseseho, kterými jsou Mean Streets (1973), GoodFellas (1990) a Casino (1995). Cílem této práce je vylíčit život a tvorbu autora, najít vzájemná propojení s gangsterskými filmy v jejich počátcích a poukázat na vlivy, které měly dopad na Scorseseho tvorbu. KLÍČOVÁ SLOVA: Gangsterský film, mafie, Martin Scorsese, film, režisér ABSTRACT The Diploma Thesis deals with Martin Scorsese´s gangster movie production. It is focused on the beginnings of Mafia organisations, the development of the gangster movie genre and the works of Martin Scorsese. The practical part is focused on the analysis of Martin Scorsese´s three mafia movies, which are Mean Streets (1973), GoodFellas (1990) and Casino (1995). The aim of this work is to depict the author´s life and works, to find mutual connections between gangster movies in their very beginnings and to point to influences that had an impact on Scorsese´s work. Scorsese je jedním z nejvýraznějších scenáristů a režisérů filmové éry Nového Hollywoodu. Především je znám pro svůj autorský osobitý styl, který vychází z autentických událostí a prostředí, v němž Scorsese vyrůstal. Jeho italsko – americký původ a dětství prožité v městské části Little Italy v New Yorku se značně projevily na jeho tvorbě. Odraz obou vlivů se výrazně projevuje ve Scorseseho filmech v žánru gangsterského filmu. Záměrně jsem zvolil toto téma, jelikož bych chtěl blíže přiblížit vlivy, které se odráží v autorově tvorbě. Především má práce za cíl poukázat na dopad prostředí, etnický původ a inspiraci jinými režiséry na Scorseseho tvorbu. Uvedené jevy jsem se rozhodl aplikovat na mobi trilogií, která zahrnuje snímky Mean Streets, GoodFellas a Casino. Na zmíněných filmech se mimo jiné pokusím blíže definovat režisérův autorský styl a prvky typické pro jeho tvorbu. Prostřednictvím zvolených snímků bych chtěl poukázat na spojitost a vývoj mezi jednotlivými filmy v žánru gangsterského filmu. Od Mean Streets, který se zaměřuje na lokální mafiánské prostředí, až po snímek Casino, ve kterém je vliv mafie znatelný v mnohem větším měřítku. V první části teoretické práce bude věnována pozornost především vzniku a vývoji samotné mafie. Čtenář práce tak získá povědomí o původních sicilských organizacích až po velké mafiánské rodiny, které se usadily v USA. Tato část má za cíl přiblížit prostředí a postavy, které jsou klíčovými pro Scorseseho gangsterské filmy. Především usazení mafie v prostředí Little Italy. Druhá část teoretické práce bude zaměřena na gangsterský žánr ve filmu. Čtenáři budou popsány principy a vývoj tohoto žánru a charakteristika jednotlivých snímků. Velká pozornost bude věnována klíčovým filmům z 30. let v USA, které se staly inspirativními pro mnoho režisérů. V teoreticko-analytické části získá čtenář povědomí o životě Martina Scorseseho. Tato část bude obsahovat inspirační zdroje, přiblíží prostředí, ve kterém vyrůstal, a jeho cestu k filmu. Zaměřím se také na analýzu scenáristických, režijních a střihových 1 Gangsterský film v pojetí Martina Scorseseho postupů, které se staly typické pro Scorseseho tvorbu a napomohly k formování jeho autorského stylu. The dissertation focuses on two central texts that are indicative of two distinct historical moments of the Protestant Reformation in England. Thomas More's Utopia was first published in Latin at Louvain in 1516, roughly one year before the publication of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses signaled the commencement of the Reformation on the Continent and roughly a decade before the Henrician Reformation in England. As a humanist text, Utopia contains themes pertinent to internal Church reform, while simultaneously warning polemicists and ecclesiastics to leave off their paltry squabbles over non-essential religious matters, lest the unity of the Church catholic be imperiled. More's engagement with the Holy Land is influenced by contemporary researches into the languages of that region, most notably the search for the original and perfect language spoken before the episode at Babel. As the confusion of tongues at Babel functions etiologically to account for the origin of all ideological conflict, it was thought that the rediscovery of the prima lingua might resolve all conflict.

From the 1920s until the 1950s, brothers, Sam and Rosario Maceo, ran an influential crime family in Galveston, Texas. The brothers’ success was largely due to Galveston’s transient population, the turbulent history of the island, and the resulting economic decline experienced at the turn of the 20th century. Their success began during Prohibition, when they opened their first club. The establishment offered bootlegged liquor, fine dining, and first class entertainment. After Prohibition, the brothers continued to build an empire on the island through similar clubs, without much opposition from the locals. However, after being suspected of involvement in a drug smuggling ring, the Maceos were placed under scrutiny from outside law enforcement agencies. Through persistent investigations, the Texas Rangers finally shut down the rackets in Galveston in 1957. Despite their influence through the first half of the 20th century, on the island and off the island, their story is largely missing from the current literature. Angelo Lonardo, then Cleveland underboss who in those days was the recipient of up to $10,000 a month in illegally skimmed casino profits, testified about the incident: Q. After this resolution of the dispute between Kansas City and Milwaukee, did Chicago benefit in any manner? A. Yes, they did. Q. How was that? A. They got 25 percent of the money. It was just another routine transaction in organized crime's pervasive influence in Nevada gambling and in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, whose main pension fund served as a virtual bank for the mob. But law- enforcement officials cite its very routineness as a dramatic illustration of the ease with which they say the Mafia asserted control over the casinos and over the retirement funds of hundreds of thousands of laborers. The authorities contended for years that the teamsters were heavily corrupted, but law enforcers say that evidence assembled in recent investigations in Kansas City and elsewhere has provided a much clearer demonstration of the underlying methods of the organized crime network that fed off the teamsters' Central States, Southeast and Southwest Areas Pension Fund.
