PRESS RELEASE Send date Transitions Dance Company: Triple Bill Trinity Laban’s leading student training company showcases dancers in three brand new works from established choreographers Choreographed by Dog Kennel Hill Project, Theo Clinkard and Ederson Rodrigues Xavier UK Tour 19 February – 27 May “Performances by this enterprising company are always an eye-opener.” (Guardian Guide) Transitions Dance Company’s triple bill showcases the next generation of contemporary dance performers from Trinity Laban with twelve MA students performing three brand new pieces from choreographers Dog Kennel Hill Project, Theo Clinkard and Ederson Rodrigues Xavier. Since it was founded in 1982 by original Martha Graham Dance Company member Bonnie Bird, this pioneering company has aimed to bridge the gap between training and a professional performance career for graduate dancers. Transitions Dance Company aims to allow company members to gain practical experience of life in a touring dance company whilst simultaneously completing their MA Dance Performance. Past alumni of the company include distinguished artists such as Sir Matthew Bourne (New Adventures), Luca Silvestrini (Luca Silvestrini’s Protein), and Emma Gladstone (Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Dance Umbrella). Fieldwork from performance and research collective Dog Kennel Hill Project explores how, as a newly formed company, the dancers locate themselves now and in relation to their past. Through a deconstructed series of arrivals and departures and a language of stumbles, false starts, surges and going round in circles, Fieldwork asks “when do we truly arrive anywhere?” my dance, your touch draws upon research that outlines how physical touch affects our behavioural, cultural, emotional and biological development. -

It was based on the novella Carmen by Prosper Mérimée. Like Bizet's opera Carmen, this film only adapts the third part of Mérimée's novella and transforms the character of Don José at the beginning of the story from bandit on the run to honest man in love with his childhood sweetheart. The film was released with English inter:tles in the United States in 1921 under the alternave :tle Gypsy Blood. Tobias Schwencke was born 1974 in Berlin and grew up in Duisburg. Studied in Duisburg, Saarbrücken and Berlin, where he has lived since 2001. His work includes free composion, music theatre, theatre music, pianis:c ac:vity; regular work at the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, Berliner Ensemble, Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Ballet Hispanico: CARMEN.maquia Facebook Twitter Print Email Pinterest More Sat, March 21, 2020 @ 7:30pm Category: dance Victoria Theater @ New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) One Center Street Newark, NJ 07102 Ballet Hispánico, the nation’s premier Latin dance organization, brings its celebrated CARMEN.maquia, a sensual, full-length work created by Spanish choreographer Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, inspired by Bizet’s beloved opera. Fueled by physically charged choreography that fuses contemporary dance with Spanish paso doble and flamenco, CARMEN.maquia takes its cues from the 1845 novella by Prosper Mérimée and the 1875 opera by Georges Bizet. The ballet tells the dramatic story of Carmen, a spirited gypsy, and her love triangle with the doting Don Jose, an army officer, and Escamillo, a bullfighter. In his version, Sansano reimagines Carmen in a Picasso-inspired setting, with a white, canvas-like set and sculptural costumes made to evoke the inside of traditional flamenco attire. Bizet’s classic score remains the soundtrack, in the form of various orchestral versions with no vocals. Currently under the artistic direction of Eduardo Vilaro, Ballet Hispánico tours worldwide with a diverse repertory by some of the foremost choreographers of our time as well as emerging artists. The company is acclaimed for works that fuse Latin dance with classical and contemporary techniques to create a new style in which theatricality and passion propel every move. “Ballet Hispánico shows what it is to be Latino in the modern world,” says The Financial Times. -

Canada's National Ballet School
Canada’s National Ballet: 50 Years of Evolution by Paula Citron It was clear with the founding of the National Ballet of Canada in 1951 that a future national ballet school was a necessity. Betty Oliphant and Celia Franca are the two remarkable women who co-founded Canada’s National Ballet School in 1959. As Oliphant wrote in her autobiography Miss O: My Life in Dance: “Celia Franca and I knew that a good company needs a good school to feed it.” James Neufeld says in his book Power to Rise: The Story of the National Ballet of Canada: “(Franca) was a teacher of professionals and saw with a teacher’s eye that the raw material before her had to be shaped and trained. Teaching would be the key to the company’s success.” The NBS is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year, and there is much to celebrate. The school is considered among the top professional ballet academies in the world. Just as the Herculean efforts of Oliphant and Franca helped found the school, so have the innovative policies of Oliphant and her chosen successor, Mavis Staines (class of 1972), help raise the school to its lofty perch in the world of dance education. On the recommendation of Dame Ninette de Valois of the Sadler’s Wells Ballet, Franca came from England to Toronto in 1951 to found the National Ballet of Canada. Betty Oliphant, who had arrived from England in 1947 as a war bride, ran a successful ballet school in the city. Oliphant was asked by Franca to become the company’s ballet mistress. -
