Ticket: # 1282270 _____________________________________________________________________________ Ticket: # 1282270 - Time Warner interrupts my service with their "30 second survey" Date: 10/22/2016 6:50:43 PM City/State/Zip: New York City, New York 10024 Company Complaining About: Time Warner _____________________________________________________________________________ Description Several times per day while I am on the Internet, Time-Warner interrupts my service with their 30 second survey that purports to give free gifts for answering their questions. However they require that you pay for these "free gifts" which are useless anyway. I don't mind that, what I object to is that their interruption is a nuisance and they won't let you decline the survey and you have to use the Task Manager to escape them, but then you have lost the site you were looking at. _____________________________________________________________________________ Ticket: # 1282285 - TWC and Frontier Date: 10/22/2016 7:36:20 PM City/State/Zip: Chino, California 91710 Company Complaining About: Time Warner _____________________________________________________________________________ Description I recently moved to the area of Chino. I am a graphic designer, student , business person and mom. I use the internet everyday for my work and business. The options and services available in my area are awful. TWC only offers internet speeds up to 100mbps for $50 a month and Frontier is $60 a month. To get anything faster, the price triples. I previously lived twenty minutes away. At my previous residence I had many speed options and more then just TWO competitors to choose from . The service itself is horrible. The signal goes in and out. The online services are always experiencing errors. In the middle of a test, my internet just stopped working. My test thought I was done, when the connection stopped working and closed my test before I had completed the exam. I have considered moving to the ONE other competitor in my area. My neighbors and business contacts advice me not to. They ALL have told me they hate having Frontier. The service is spotty and they are always being billed wrong. _____________________________________________________________________________ Ticket: # 1282720 - Remote instituted loss of PC use Date: 10/23/2016 1:34:27 PM City/State/Zip: Brooklyn, North Carolina 11230-1804 Company Complaining About: Amy Murphy _____________________________________________________________________________ Description A call(s) from (b) (6) (b) (6) resulted in a remotely instituted loss of the ability of my PC to be turned on so as to access the internet. I know it to be illegal to sell or advertise in the United States a device that blocks cell phone signals. Please look at this site: http://www.thesignaljammer.com/pages/School-Classroom-Cell-Phone-Jamming.html for a fear it is breaking the law and/or misleading its consumers. Either send notice to the provider/manufacturer and have the site taken down. Thank you. _____________________________________________________________________________ Ticket: # 1283426 - Deliberate disabling of 3g/4g cellular services Date: 10/24/2016 9:35:09 AM City/State/Zip: Watauga, Texas 76148 Company Complaining About: Citibank _____________________________________________________________________________ Description The Citibank building at 4050 Regent Blvd, Irving TX 75063 has obvious signs of deliberate 3g/4g cellular service disruption/interference/disabling throughout the building. The T-Mobile 4g lte map indicates this entire area is 100% 4g capable. Once stepping within 10-15 feet of the building all 3g/4g services are inaccessible and phones struggle to connect to the Edge/GSM network to make simple communications like calls and texts. Attempting to make a phone call results in a delay in connection if it connects at all, and many calls/texts go unsent and unreceived once within 10-15 feet of the building. The same issue exists throughout the entire building no matter where you are located. Signal strength is 100% but can't connect to 4g until 20 feet away from the building. _____________________________________________________________________________ Ticket: # 1283477 - bad service Date: 10/24/2016 10:05:40 AM City/State/Zip: Norfolk, Virginia 23517 Company Complaining About: Cox _____________________________________________________________________________ Description I use cox internet service. The person is using to attacked other people cellular services within 1500 hundred feet. Location North West Building of Clark and Fullerton. Information about the device: Good Evening, I have looked into the potential causes for your phone problems and am inclined to believe that your device is indeed the victim of a man-in-the-middle attack. The youtube video I link below is from DefCon 18 and goes into detail regarding how this works, but the gist of it is: - Attacker uses signal jammer to disable communication between your device and legitimate carrier towers. - Without carrier towers to communicate with, your device reverts from 3G/4G to GPRS/EDGE communication protocols in attempt to find any available service. - Attacker uses a universal software radio peripheral to mimic a cell carrier base station and uses (presumably...) a European GSM frequency to connect to your device. - In GSM, the tower dictates all of the details of the communication between itself and the device (in fact, because of FCC laws and the typical bands used for this, typically encryption will be disabled entirely). - The attacker's fake tower can pull your IMSI (your unique identifier to your carrier), push new firmware to your device, etc. etc. If you have some patience this weekend and want to give the authorities some useful information, try walking your neighborhood with your device and keeping track of where and when your signal is dropping. Depending on the power the attacker is providing to the jammier, you may be able to narrow down

North Korean Cyber Capabilities: In Brief Emma Chanlett-Avery Specialist in Asian Affairs Liana W. Rosen Specialist in International Crime and Narcotics John W. Rollins Specialist in Terrorism and National Security Catherine A. Theohary Specialist in National Security Policy, Cyber and Information Operations August 3, 2017 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov R44912 North Korean Cyber Capabilities: In Brief Overview As North Korea has accelerated its missile and nuclear programs in spite of international sanctions, Congress and the Trump Administration have elevated North Korea to a top U.S. foreign policy priority. Legislation such as the North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016 (P.L. 114-122) and international sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council have focused on North Korea’s WMD and ballistic missile programs and human rights abuses. According to some experts, another threat is emerging from North Korea: an ambitious and well-resourced cyber program. North Korea’s cyberattacks have the potential not only to disrupt international commerce, but to direct resources to its clandestine weapons and delivery system programs, potentially enhancing its ability to evade international sanctions. As Congress addresses the multitude of threats emanating from North Korea, it may need to consider responses to the cyber aspect of North Korea’s repertoire. This would likely involve multiple committees, some of which operate in a classified setting. This report will provide a brief summary of what unclassified open-source reporting has revealed about the secretive program, introduce four case studies in which North Korean operators are suspected of having perpetrated malicious operations, and provide an overview of the international finance messaging service that these hackers may be exploiting.

  • Never Agains IV February 2010
the Availability Digest www.availabilitydigest.com More Never Agains IV February 2010 It is once again time to reflect on the damage that IT systems can inflict on us mere humans. We have come a long way in ensuring the high availability of our data-processing systems. But as the following stories show, we still have a ways to go. During the last six months, hardware/software and network faults shared responsibility, each causing about one-third of the outages. The rest of the outages were caused by a variety of problems such as power failures, construction mishaps, and hacking. Rackspace Hit with Another Outage Techcrunch, June 20, 2009 – On June 20, Rackspace suffered yet another outage1 due to a power failure. The breaker on the primary utility feed powering one of its nine data centers tripped, causing data center’s generators to start up. However, a field excitation failure escalated to the point that the generators became overloaded. An attempt by Rackspace to fail over to its secondary utility feed failed because the transfer switch malfunctioned. When the data center’s batteries ran out, the data center went down. Failovers do fail. Have a contingency plan no matter the extent of your redundancy. NYSE Suffers Several Outages in Less Than a Month Reuters, July 2, 2009 – On Thursday morning, July 2, brokers on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange found that they could not route orders, causing the NYSE to halt trading in some stocks and to extend the trading day. During the previous month, a software glitch halted trading; and an order-matching problem affected timely order reconciliation.

JAZZ WRITING? I am one of Mr. Turley's "few people" who follow The New Yorker and are jazz lovers, and I find in Whitney Bal- liett's writing some of the sharpest and best jazz criticism in the field. He has not been duped with "funk" in its pseudo-gospel hard-boppish world, or- with the banal playing and writing of some of the "cool school" Californians. He does believe, and rightly so, that a fine jazz performance erases the bound• aries of jazz "movements" or fads. He seems to be able to spot insincerity in any phalanx of jazz musicians. And he has yet to be blinded by the name of a "great"; his recent column on Bil- lie Holiday is the most clear-headed analysis I have seen, free of the fan- magazine hero-worship which seems to have been the order of the day in the trade. It is true that a great singer has passed away, but it does the late Miss Holiday's reputation no good not to ad• LETTERS mit that some of her later efforts were (dare I say it?) not up to her earlier work in quality. But I digress. In Mr. Balliett's case, his ability as a critic is added to his admitted "skill with words" (Turley). He is making a sincere effort to write rather than play jazz; to improvise with words,, rather than notes. A jazz fan, in order to "dig" a given solo, unwittingly knows a little about the equipment: the tune being improvised to, the chord struc• ture, the mechanics of the instrument, etc.

  • Online Dialogue and Interaction Disruption. a Latin American Government’S Use of Twitter Affordances to Dissolve Online Criticism
Online Dialogue and Interaction Disruption. A Latin American Government’s Use of Twitter Affordances to Dissolve Online Criticism Dialogo en línea e interacciones interrumpidas. El uso que un gobierno Latinoamericano hace de las posibilidades tecnológicas de Twitter para disolver críticas en línea Carlos Davalos University of Wisconsin-Madison Orcid http://orcid.org/0000-0001-6846-1661 [email protected] Abstract: Few academic studies have focused on how Latin American governments operate online. Political communica- tion studies focused on social media interactions have overwhelmingly dedicated efforts to understand how regular citizens interact and behave online. Through the analysis of hashtags and other online strategies that were used during Mexican Pres- ident Enrique Peña Nieto’s (EPN) term to critique or manifest unconformity regarding part of the government’s performance, this study observes how members of a Latin American democratic regime weaponized a social media platform to dissipate criticism. More specifically, it proposes that the manipulation of social media affordances can debilitate essential democratic attributes like freedom of expression. Using a qualitative approach, consisting of observation, textual analysis, and online eth- nography, findings show that some Mexican government’s manipulation of inconvenient Twitter conversations could impact or even disrupt potential offline crises. Another objective of the presented research is to set a baseline for future efforts focused on how Latin American democratic regimes behave and generate digital communication on social media platforms.

  • Availability Digest
the Availability Digest www.availabilitydigest.com Help! My Data Center is Down! Part 3: Internet Outages December 2011 Long gone are the days of the isolated data center. Back then, batch jobs were submitted to update databases and to generate reports. Back then, turn-around times were measured in hours or even days. In today’s competitive environment, IT services are online; and instant response times are expected. What good is a data center if no one can talk to it? Orders can’t be placed or tracked. Medical records can’t be accessed. Online banking comes to a halt. Today’s data centers must be connected. They depend upon the networks that allow users to access them online reliably and with fast response times. In the old days, a company had control over its communication network. It leased lines that it used exclusively for its purposes. If it lost communications, it had direct access to its communication carrier for rapid repair. For critical applications, companies installed redundant communication facilities so that they could continue in operation even in the presence of a communications failure on one of their lines. Not so true today. More and more, companies are relying on the public Internet to connect their users with company data centers. But how reliable is the Internet? In our previous articles in this series, we related horror stories of unimaginable power failures and storage failures that took down the best-designed data centers. In this article, we explore some notable Internet failures that rendered data centers useless even though they were otherwise fully operational.
