6 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | OCTOBER 2011 The other side of Bill Kaulitz The singer is not just the new face of German pop but also fashion trends

He often has been called the dark angel of the catwalk. His rocker style and outrageous hairstyle have given him a piece of the fashion’s world cake at a very early age. He has a passion for fashion and his wardrobe proves it. In an interview with Buzznet he declared his obsession for clothes and that he has “10 to 20 suitcases with me. By now my closet looks almost like a clothing store. Although I find myself a little crazy, I love it.”

He is right, many people might find his flair for fashion crazy and Tokio Hotel forums are full of references to the topic, even suggesting that he may be homosexual because of his androgynous look. He seems not to care as long as he dresses in what he wants.

Neither does he care about prices. Among his preferred clothes are a couple of Givenchy ‘Shtretch jersey leopard leggings’ priced 627 Euros. His collection is also matched with Burberry jackets worth more than 1,000 Euros. He has also declared his love for Rad Hourani boots, showing them off in many of his public appearances.

His best fashion moment so far has been in a photo shoot for the 30th anniversary of Vogue Magazine. Commissioned for the tricky job was the fashion legend and designer Karl Lagerfeld and the result was better than both of them expected. In declarations to Style.com months later, the designer said he would choose the singer for future catwalk shows.

Bill Kaulitz loves the fashion world and also is conscious about its problems and challenges. It is known worldwide about the animal killings among the fashion industry, but the singer doesn’t like anything related with brutality to other living species. At the moment of choosing a piece, he makes sure that no animal’s skin has been used on it.

8 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | OCTOBER 2011 Rammstein: A career of controversies For these German rockers the showbiz is not just music and money; scandals have also boosted their career across the globe

They have been called neo-Nazis, phonographic advocates, and sexual violence promoters. Since their beginnings Rammstein, has courted scandals with their albums and live shows in a menu which presents sadomasochism, homosexuality, incest, abuse, necrophilia, cannibalism and sexual violence in the ‘main course’ of their lyrics. They, of course, top it all with the dessert: live performances including sex toys and pyrotechnical effects. The results have been as diverse as their work, including a visit to jail in the US.

The Nazi and fascism polemic started in 1998 when the band launched the promotional video of their single “Stripped” that included footage images from the filmmaker Leni Riefenstah, well known for his support of the Third Reich. In those days the, Deputy Editor for the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, said that the footage was very suspicious and linked the band with national-socialism pride.

A year later, while touring in the US, they found themselves behind bars after a gig in Massachusetts. That night, the front man and keyboard player were arrested by police and charged with lascivious behaviors. The specific offense occurred during the song «Buck Dich» when Lindemann simulated anal sex with Lorenz using a fake phallus.

They have gained troubles regarding their performances in their country, as well. The ‘choreography’ for the song «Ich tue Dir weh» was also banned in Germany under a ruling that called offensive and harmful to young people and its violation could potentially be punished under German law.

Their albums have been part of the controversy. In 2009, their X production Liebe ist Für Alle Da was banned from displays in stores in their own country. The German authorities found the cover very offensive and harmful to young people and children due to its depictions of sadism and masochism. Some shocking images from the album artwork included the image of a masked Kruspe with a naked woman on his knees.

The band had to deal with controversy for months later but they didn’t seem to feel uncomfortable. What is more, they seemed to enjoy it. Alarms sounded again when Rammstein launched “Wiener Blut,” a song with references to the story of Josef Fitz, the Austrian father accused and jailed for raping his daughter for 24 consecutive years.

The band has declared in many occasions their left tendency and even wrote the song “Links 1 2 3” to make clear they are not connected and don’t support any kind of fascist or Nazi movement. Regarding the sexual and strong content in Rammstein’s lyrics, they have said they just reflect present day’s society.

14 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | OCTOBER 2011 Interview with Brigitte

Maria Bertele A Hero´s Welcome Director Which was the most difficult challenge while directing the film? The greatest challenge was to work with the extremely young actor Jona Ruggaber, who interprets the character of Benni, because the relationship between the soldier David and his younger half brother Benni shows a complex co-dependency oscillating between extreme poles: there is great love, care and trust accompanied by abuse and violence on the other side.

What did you find most difficult about telling the story of a war veteran? At the beginning of my research in 2007. I started to talk to soldiers who returned from Afghanistan and had to realize that the deployment abroad no longer consisted only of a peacekeeping mission, but that Germany is definitely involved in a war.

What was the starting point for this story An acquaintance of the writer Johanna Stuttmann was in Kosovo with the Bundeswehr in 2000. He returned greatly changed, outwardly and inwardly. Since then, she researched until she decided to begin work on the script for A Hero’s Welcome.

Did the script change in the course of shooting the film? When I came into contact with the material, David’s story fascinated me from the first moment. More important for me than intervening in the course of the story was to develop a very personal approach to the material, which enabled me to implement the scenes, which were often very demanding to stage.

How was the acceptance among German critics and viewers? The response was enormous as the topic of contemporary German war veterans had not been discussed very much until the release of the film. One member of the German army even founded an initiative called Angriff auf die Seele (“Attack on the Soul”) after he saw the movie at the Berlin Film Festival 2008 to help affected soldiers and to create more awareness among privates and their relatives.

What research is behind the development of the character of David? The research on David’s character consisted of many personal interviews with returnees from Afghanistan and other crisis regions and of talks with soldiers and police officers who have killed while on duty, also with psychologists specialized in treating post-traumatic stress syndrome.

What are your next projects? This year I finished a movie called Der Brand (“The Fire”) about PTSD after having suffered sexual violence, which had its world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival on August. Currently I am working on a preparation of a documentary in Africa which, will hopefully be released in 2012.

ParkourGermany A group of friends who struggle with their teenage dreams and loves while enjoying their passion for Parkour

Cast Christoph Letkowski, Nora von Waldstätten Director Marc Rensing Country Germany Year 2009 ORIGINAL TITLE Parkour

Synopsis Parkour is a drama about Richie (Christoph Letkowski), a young man and his group of friends in an unnamed industrial town in Germany. When he meets Hanna (Nora von Waldstätten), he immediately has a crush on her. The film is a captivating story of friendship, love, and jealousy and deals with the urban sport Parkour, the physical discipline of training in which the ‘traceur’ has to overcome obstacles within his or her path in the most creative possible way.

If there is an urban sport which could describe the course of the film and end in a dramatic test of friendship essence of last decade in modern cities, that one is between the protagonists Richie, Hanna and Paul, when Parkour. Eurochannel presents a film by the young they have to prove the loyalty and respect they have for German director Marc Rensing, which not only captures one other. breathtaking Parkour scenes but also tells an enchanting story about friendship, love and jealousy. The conflicts continue to heat up over the PREMIERE 10/17 at 9:00 PM

16 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | OCTOBER 2011 Interview with Marc Rensing Parkour Director How did you get the idea for the movie? I read a newspaper article that talked about three friends. Two of these friends ended up killing their leader in a very dramatic and terrible way after he became psychotic. It was a true story that took place over years. The leader threatened his buddies more and more over the course of the years until his friends were so scared of him that they executed him in the open street. I then thought about what could hold this friendship together and came up with the idea of Parkour.

How was the distribution process for the film? The Hof International Film Festival selected Parkour as their opening film. We then won two awards with the movie. After that, distributors became interested and started contacting us. The movie went out German cinemas on March 11 that year.

How did you find your actors in Parkour? They’re all unknown faces in German cinema I did not want to work with known actors because the audience would not believe that this person is really doing Parkour. I also intentionally wanted to work with fresh faces and up-and-coming actors and actresses because in Germany you often see the same artists on the screen, and that can get a bit boring. Interview with Nora von Waldstätten (Hanna) Do you think life could be compared to parkour in the aspect one have to overcome obstacles? Oh, certainly! As in life and as in acting: work with the obstacle. Don’t ignore it, don’t walk around it. Use it. A strong resistance can help you form certain energy and might even be the solution.

How did you prepare for the role? I created a character biography: how was her childhood, the relationship with the parents, her biggest dream and fear. Since she worked in a post office, I also did two days internship at a post office in Berlin.

Is any actor a parkour fan? Does someone in the cast practice it? During preparation time, all the male leads had parkour training and they loved it! They became really good at it. So good, that they often refused to let the stunt double do the action.

What interests you the most about the movie and your character? I found the aspects of this sport and the interaction with Richie’s life really intriguing. Someone who practices a sport that requires a free, open and sharp mind and yet in his private life, looses this ability more and more. Hanna is a very real girl. She works hard in order to achieve her goals and loves life. She notices bit by bit that her relationship is getting more and more unpredictable because of Richie’s jealousy. She tries hard to hold on to him with all her love and strength.
