Knowsley Supported Internships JANUARY 2018 ISSUE 8 Bowled over As well as taking part in English, Maths and Employability sessions on Fridays at Stretton Way, the young adults run an enterprise project. This involves running a tuck shop containing cold snacks, drinks, various soups, pasta pots and pot noodles. Between September and December, the group raised £105 which contributed towards their end of term celebration. Their chosen activity was to go to Hollywood Bowl and then lunch at McDonalds. Beforehand there was a lot of planning to do. The group worked as a team to agree dates/times and organised a minibus through Knowsley Community College. They all thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was great to see everyone getting involved and showing their competitive streak! A lovely way to finish off the first term. Food hygiene Since the beginning of the Knowsley Supported Internship Programme back in September 2016 there’s been a number of young adults placed within a catering environment. Becky and Terry from the 2016 intake are now in paid employment with Lord Derby Academy and Kirkby High School. Also, from the 2017 intake, we have Adam, working in Knowsley Community College’s canteen and The Bistro, Nicole working at Bluebell Park School and Jackie who is at All Saints School. All five have now completed food hygiene training and this will contribute towards their professional development as well as enhancing their understanding of food hygiene. An interview with Nicole “Hello my name is Nicole. I’m 19 and from Page Moss. Before starting on the programme I was in full time education at Alt Bridge post-16. I am doing my placement at Bluebell Park School as a catering assistant. I really enjoy working as part of a big supportive team and the different type of jobs that I do, which includes mixing the tuna with mayonnaise ready for the pasta pots, preparing student and staff sandwiches and also helping the kitchen staff serve the dinners. I have also been given the chance to make cheesecakes and apple crumbles, which I really enjoyed! I’m really enjoying my placement as it has helped me improve my confidence to speak to people. I’ve also improved my communication skills, working as part of a team and following instructions.” For more information about the Supported Internship Programme, contact Sue Temple-Fielding or Llyr Owen on 0151 443 2574 .
