The symbol 0 indicates that a previous civil marriage had taken place INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEGEMENTS Marriage records of the Catholic church are a rich source for researchers. They include, in many instances, the names of parents of both bride and groom; frequently mention the place of birth of one or both; and on some occasions even show the ages. The records here are those of St. Louis' three oldest churches: the Old Cathedral (St. Louis, King of France) starting in 1774, St Ferdinand de Florissant from 1794, and the Carondelet Church (St. May and Joseph) starting in 1826. They were indexed in the mid-1800's by Oscar Collet, who combined St. Louis and Carondelet. In 1918 Mr. E. Boyd Ware made a typed copy of the St. Louis Carondlet index for the Missouri Historical Society, Jefferson Memorial, Forest Park, St. Louis. The Missouri Historical Society also has the indexes, and the accompanying marriage records, on microfilm. But none ofthese indexes have printed, prior to this. As a result, much valuable material has not been available for researchers outside St. Louis. While the records which follow are basically indexes, they include almost all the pertinent information noted down by the priests. The complete record will also show the signatures of witnesses. We thank the Missouri Historical Society for the use of their typescript, George F. Wilson, who transcribed it for us, and the anonymous (by choice) donor who lent us a copy of the St. Ferdinand records. FRENCH FOOD VS. FAST FOOD: JOSÉ BOVÉ TAKES ON MCDONALD’S BY RIXA ANN SPENCER FREEZE has been approved for the Department of History and the College of Arts and Sciences by Chester J. Pach Associate Professor of History Leslie A. Flemming Dean, College of Arts and Sciences FREEZE, RIXA ANN SPENCER. M.A. June 2002. History. French Food vs. Fast Food: José Bové Takes on McDonald’s (184 pp.) Director of Thesis: Chester J. Pach This thesis explores the French farmer and activist José Bové and his widely publicized protest against McDonald’s France in August 1999. With the help of 300 demonstrators, he dismantled a partially constructed McDonald’s restaurant and caused an international stir. Many factors influenced Bové’s protest: his background in radical agricultural activism, a historical overview of French-American cultural relations, and tensions over globalization in France. José Bové’s protest has undergone many interpretations, some that favor his cause and some that do not. Even after his trial a year later, several issues remained unresolved—how much damage the protest caused and whether the action against McDonald’s was a legitimate (if illegal) form of protest. McDonald’s France has responded to Bové’s criticisms by changing its image, décor, and menu offerings. José Bové is a complex character; though his tactics are extreme at times, he has successfully raised awareness about issues that contemporary French society faces.

  • Histoires De Famine. La Patente Au Moyen Age
Histoires de famine. La patente au Moyen Age Collection dirigee par Martin Aurell 4 Plantageriets et Capetiens: confrontations et heritages EDITE PAR MARTIN AURELL ET NOEL-YVES TONNERRE BREPOLS '\ I " )_:_ Lj Patronage, Politics and Piety in the Charters of Eleanor of Aquitaine Nicholas VINCENT In 1959, H.G. Richardson wrote that Eleanor of Aquitaine 'has been less than happy in her biographers", Even in Richardson's day, this was something of an understatement, since Eleanor has in fact inspired some of the very worst historical writing devoted to the European Middle Ages. Adopted as a figurehead by literary romantics and more recently by feminist historians, the Eleanor of history has been overshadowed by an Eleanor of wishful-thinking and make-believe. The tone here is set by Amy Kelly's biography, first published in 1950. Attempting to enter the mind-set of her heroine after the manner of Sir Walter Scott, Kelly conjures up a fantasy world of courtly love, fair damsels and daring deeds. 'The highhearted Plan- tagenets are marble still. The dusty sunlight falls softly where they sleep', Kelly concludes, in fine pre-Raphaelite mode but with about as much understanding of optical physics as of the reality of twelfth-century kingship". Even the most sober and distinguished of scholars, some of them far too distinguished to cite here by name, have been tempted to tread in Kelly's footsteps. On the one hand they admit that very little is or can be known of Eleanor's personality or daily life. On the other hand, and in direct contradiction of the admitted facts, they then pile conjecture upon conjecture in pursuit of an Eleanor whom even the novelists amongst us might find unduly fantasmagorical.
