FRENCH FOOD VS. FAST FOOD: JOSÉ BOVÉ TAKES ON MCDONALD’S A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Rixa Ann Spencer Freeze June 2002 This thesis entitled FRENCH FOOD VS. FAST FOOD: JOSÉ BOVÉ TAKES ON MCDONALD’S BY RIXA ANN SPENCER FREEZE has been approved for the Department of History and the College of Arts and Sciences by Chester J. Pach Associate Professor of History Leslie A. Flemming Dean, College of Arts and Sciences FREEZE, RIXA ANN SPENCER. M.A. June 2002. History. French Food vs. Fast Food: José Bové Takes on McDonald’s (184 pp.) Director of Thesis: Chester J. Pach This thesis explores the French farmer and activist José Bové and his widely publicized protest against McDonald’s France in August 1999. With the help of 300 demonstrators, he dismantled a partially constructed McDonald’s restaurant and caused an international stir. Many factors influenced Bové’s protest: his background in radical agricultural activism, a historical overview of French-American cultural relations, and tensions over globalization in France. José Bové’s protest has undergone many interpretations, some that favor his cause and some that do not. Even after his trial a year later, several issues remained unresolved—how much damage the protest caused and whether the action against McDonald’s was a legitimate (if illegal) form of protest. McDonald’s France has responded to Bové’s criticisms by changing its image, décor, and menu offerings. José Bové is a complex character; though his tactics are extreme at times, he has successfully raised awareness about issues that contemporary French society faces.

  • Histoires De Famine. La Patente Au Moyen Age
Histoires de famine. La patente au Moyen Age Collection dirigee par Martin Aurell 4 Plantageriets et Capetiens: confrontations et heritages EDITE PAR MARTIN AURELL ET NOEL-YVES TONNERRE BREPOLS '\ I " )_:_ Lj Patronage, Politics and Piety in the Charters of Eleanor of Aquitaine Nicholas VINCENT In 1959, H.G. Richardson wrote that Eleanor of Aquitaine 'has been less than happy in her biographers", Even in Richardson's day, this was something of an understatement, since Eleanor has in fact inspired some of the very worst historical writing devoted to the European Middle Ages. Adopted as a figurehead by literary romantics and more recently by feminist historians, the Eleanor of history has been overshadowed by an Eleanor of wishful-thinking and make-believe. The tone here is set by Amy Kelly's biography, first published in 1950. Attempting to enter the mind-set of her heroine after the manner of Sir Walter Scott, Kelly conjures up a fantasy world of courtly love, fair damsels and daring deeds. 'The highhearted Plan- tagenets are marble still. The dusty sunlight falls softly where they sleep', Kelly concludes, in fine pre-Raphaelite mode but with about as much understanding of optical physics as of the reality of twelfth-century kingship". Even the most sober and distinguished of scholars, some of them far too distinguished to cite here by name, have been tempted to tread in Kelly's footsteps. On the one hand they admit that very little is or can be known of Eleanor's personality or daily life. On the other hand, and in direct contradiction of the admitted facts, they then pile conjecture upon conjecture in pursuit of an Eleanor whom even the novelists amongst us might find unduly fantasmagorical.

  • INFORMATION to USERS Xerox University Microfilms
INFORMATION TO USERS This materia was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most atfraneed technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been ured the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or Mttems which may appear on this reproduction. I.T he sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sretioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of 8 large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, ^wever, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from lotographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
