When modest ministers submit their sermons to the press they usually place upon the title page the words " Printed iy Request." We might with emphatic truthfulness have pleaded this apology for the present narrative, for times without number friends from all parts of the world have said, " Have you no book which will tell us all about your work ? Could you not give us some printed summary of the Tabernacle history ? " Here it is, dear friends, and we hope it will satisfy your curiosity and deepen your kindly interest. The best excuse for writing a history is that there is something to tell, and unless we are greatly mistaken the facts here placed on record are well worthy of being known. In us they have aroused fervent emotions of gratitude, and in putting them together our faith in God has been greatly established: we hope, therefore, that in some measure our readers will derive the same benefit. Strangers cannot be expected to feel an equal interest with ourselves, but our fellow members, our co-workers, our hundreds of generous helpers, and the large circle of our hearty sympathizers cannot read our summary of the Lord's dealings with us without stimulus and encouragement. Our young people ought to be told by their fathers the wondrous things which God did in their day " and in the old time before them." Such things are forgotten if they are not every now and then rehearsed anew in the ears of fresh generations. -

His Baptist Annual Register (1790- J1802), his hymnody, his leadership among London Baptists as pastor at Carter Lane, Southwark, and his influence in the formation of the Baptist Union are well-known.' This article outlines another aspect of Rippon's importance: his contribution to early Baptist historiography. -

Charles spurgeon biography pdf Continue Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the most famous Baptist priest of Victorian England, was born on June 19, 1834 in Kelvedon, Essex, and spent his childhood and early teenage years in Stamborne, Colchester and Newmarket. In 1856 he married Suzanne Thompson; their only children, twin sons Thomas and Charles, were born on September 20, 1857. Spurgeon had no formal education outside the Newmarket Academy, where he studied from August 1849 to June 1850, but he was very well educated in Puritan theology, natural history, Latin and Victorian literature. His lack of higher education did not prevent his remarkable preaching career, which began in 1850, when he was only fifteen years old. A few months after converting to Christianity, he began preaching in Teheversham. The following year he took his first pastor, at a Baptist chapel in Waterbeach. The church quickly grew from less than a dozen parishioners to more than four hundred, and Spurgeon's reputation as a preacher caught the attention of New Park Street, London's largest Baptist church. He was invited to preach there in December 1853 and, after a short probationary period, he agreed to move to London and become the new pastor of the church. The Spurgeon assembly on New Park Street also grew rapidly, soon becoming too big for a 1,200-seat auditorium. On August 30, 1854, members agreed to expand the chapel; During the refurbishment, services were held at the 5,000-seat Exeter Hall, a community hall in Strand Street. The renovation of New Park Street was completed in May 1855, but the chapel was still too small, and in June a committee was formed to oversee the construction of the church's new home, the 5,000-seat Metropolitan Tabernacle. -

Ruhl 2013 Abstract William Gadsby (1773-1844) stands out as an exceptional figure in the history of nineteenth-century English Particular Baptist churches: he is at once a defender of high orthodoxy, a radical separatist (as perceived by his Baptist peers), a popular preacher in the areas surrounding Manchester, and a vanguard of high Calvinistic, experimental hymnody. He is also the compiler of one of the oldest English hymnbooks still in current use, A Selection of Hymns for Public Worship (1814), known informally as “Gadsby’s Hymns.” During his lifetime Gadsby was criticized both for his anachronistic high orthodoxy and for his experimentalist modernity. To the men who argued with Gadsby, the relationship between his traditional orthodoxy and his experimentalism must have seemed bewildering, but seen from a more distanced perspective, his theological stance may be understood as a synthesis of two cultural movements: the Enlightenment and romanticism. Gadsby’s high Calvinistic orthodoxy was influenced by the Enlightenment teachings of eighteenth-century Baptist theologians John Brine and John Gill, but as the eighteenth century came to a close the influence of high Calvinism began to decline. -
