THOMSON, Antwerp The second of the two decrees on Scripture and Tradition adopted at the fourth session of the Council of Trent on 8 April 1546 stated that of all the Latin versions in circulation the Vulgate because of its centuries-old use by the Church in public services, sermons, exegesis and disputations was to be considered the authoritative one and specifi cally insisted that future editions of the Vulgate should be corrected.1 In their letter of 26 April to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520-1589) the Council legates reported that the Council had requested that the task of revision be entrusted to the Pope2 and in his reply the Cardinal very correctly pointed out the diffi culties involved and called it una impresa troppo larga et troppo indeterminata.3 It was not until 1569, six years after the work of the Council had fi nally come to an end with the twenty-fi fth and fi nal session on 3-4 December 1563, that the commission to revise the text was formed and in November 1588 the revised text was submitted to Pope Sixtus V (1585-1590), who was so displeased with the result that he reworked it, restoring many of the previous readings. The resultant text published in April 1590 left so much to be desired that on 5 September 1590, nine days after the Pope’s death on 27 August, the College of Cardinals forbade all further sales and withdrew as many copies as possible. -

The Ambiguities of the Holy: Authenticating Relics in Seventeenth-Century Spain* by K ATRINA O LDS Recent scholarship has shown that, even at the heart of the Catholic world, defining holiness in the Counter-Reformation was remarkably difficult, in spite of ongoing Roman reforms meant to centralize and standardize the authentication of saints and relics. If the standards for evaluating sanctity were complex and contested in Rome, they were even less clear to regional actors, such as the Bishop of Jae´n, who supervised the discovery of relics in Arjona, a southern Spanish town, beginning in 1628. The new relics presented the bishop, Cardinal Baltasar de Moscoso y Sandoval, with knotty historical, theological, and procedural dilemmas. -

Chapter 10 Astrology and the End of Science in Early Modern Italy Brendan Dooley It has become a truism of studies on early science that the Renaissance philosophy of nature, both in Italy and in Northern Europe, drew upon a powerful mix of seemingly contradictory elements: geometry and mysticism, scholasticism and vitalism. And to be convinced of the striking range of combinations, even in the case of Galileo Galilei, there is no need to pay any more than due attention to his dabbling in astrology and his affinity with Neoplatonism. 1 Among many thinkers, long-standing beliefs about the relation between the macrocosm of heavenly spheres and the microcosm of human affairs combined with humanist attitudes to ancient texts and new conceptions about the application of mathematical models to physical reality. What has not yet been examined in any great detail is the extent to which popular ideas may have influenced certain aspects of this culture that are better known in their erudite formulations. 2 Recent work on the social history of science, meanwhile, has drawn the gaze of the researcher from the heights of intellectual creativity down to the level of the daily practice of many important protagonists. Daily practice compelled an interchange with individuals at many different social levels, put the protagonists in situations where the common language of natural knowledge was spoken in many different dialects—high and low. 3 From this perspective, Galileo’s involvement with astrology, a set of concepts and activities as deeply inscribed within circuits of popular as of erudite knowledge, takes on new significance. -

There is certainly no shortage of books on the subject. Several general surveys of the witch trials and numerous regional and micro studies have been published for an English-speaking readership. While the quality of publications on witchcraft has been high, some regions and topics have received less attention over the years. The aim of this series is to help illuminate these lesser known or little studied aspects of the history of witchcraft and magic. Despite their differences, the offences involved the practice of dissimulation and connected with Venice's position as a transit city, since for most offenders Venice was one among their various destinations in their peregrinations in the Mediterranean. The Thesis draws on the printed transcripts of cases involving Judaism, but also unpublished archival material in both the State archive, and the Patriarchal archive.
