Robinson Worldwide appointed Ivo Aris director of global forwarding for C.H. Robinson Europe. Mr. Aris is charged with leading continental growth and advancement of the global forwarding division. Livingston International appointed Steven Preston CEO following Peter Luit’s retirement after 16 years at the helm. UTi Worldwide opened new London operations, expanding its existing air cargo hub. Complete with X-ray screening, bonded storage and refrigerated capabilities, the 33,000 square foot building serves as its primary UK air and road facility while consolidating air cargo to and from other UK locations. OnTrac will expand its San Diego overnight delivery service’s operation to 84,000 square feet to support increased volume. UPS Freight opened its new 72-door East Indianapolis Service Center on August 12. The new facility serves eastern Greater Indianapolis, complementing an existing 80-door Indianapolis Service Center that now serves the western metropolitan area. Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. reported Q2 2013 profits of $92.3 million, up 10.0% vs. Q2 2012’s $84.0 million. However, Q2 revenue slipped 0.3% year-over-year to $1.5 billion. C.H. United Parcel Service-Federal Express-National Labor Relations Act-Railway Labor Act-Union Employee-Independent Contractor- FedEx-Current Developments of the Legal Status of FedEx Workers- and the Trend of Employers Classifying Employees as Independent Contractors Richard Trotter University of Baltimore UPS and FedEx are both package delivery services, however UPS workers are considered employees under the National Labor Relations Act and are represented by the Teamsters Union. FedEx, which began as an air delivery service is under the jurisdiction of the Railway Labor Act. In recent years, FedEx management has restructured its relationships with its workers in such a way as to classify them as independent contractors. Legislative actions on both the state and federal level have sought to impose stricter scrutiny on employers classifying their employees as independent contractors. INTRODUCTION The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) was originally enacted in 1935. Since its original enactment the law has been amended twice, in 1947 with the enactment of the Taft-Hartley Act and again in 1959 with the enactment of the Landrum-Griffin Act. The basic philosophic underpinnings of the law is that it protects a worker’s right to organize into labor Unions, and once organized workers can seek to be represented by a union through the election process administered by the NLRB. Once a union is chosen, the employer has a duty to engage in collective bargaining with the union elected by the employees. In 1926 the Railway Labor Act was enacted originally to govern labor relations in the railway industry. The purpose behind the law was to ensure the smooth running of the railroads without labor disruptions particularly in times of war or other national crisis. -

U.S. transportation & logistics M&A continues to see strong activity. Year-to-date 2015 transaction volume of 93 deals is on pace to surpass 2014 deal volume of 99 transactions. For the year-to-date 2015 period, strategic buyers accounted for 87% of the transportation & logistics M&A transactions with financial buyers making up the difference. During 2014, strategic buyers accounted for approximately 81% of the transactions. Asset-light transport and logistics companies are trading at premium valuations compared to the S&P 500. Many larger, publicly traded transportation and logistics companies have been very active in pursuing acquisitions. One of the best parts of the UPS software and product offerings is that companies can mix and match and add on any element that will benefit them. Supply chain management is an increasingly complex issue within companies, especially in today’s day and age. As companies increasingly need to compete on an international landscape UPS technologies are leveling the playing field. Wireless Technologies The United Parcel Service of America, Inc is constantly improving and implementing wireless technology around the world.
