Garlands Members are RESILIENT! Think of all the world events and life experiences you’ve come through. Here are some of the ways you’re thriving during the pandemic:

Creating – Veronica Potter Veronica Potter could have succumbed to the blues during the stay-at-home mandate. Her kids and grandchildren who live out of state were due to visit and had to cancel. Staying within her four walls AND missing out on family – even her daughter who lives nearby – was almost too much, almost . . . “I’ve been through a lot of hard times in my life,” says Veronica. “But it’s so nice to wake up and say, ‘Hey! I get another day of life’ And I’ve made a good life. I’m proud of who I’ve been.” This former Marine (1944-1946), flamenco dancer, Harper College art teacher, grandmother to 17 grandchildren, great grandmother to six (with one on the way in December), and first art exhibitor at The Garlands, immersed herself in her art throughout the early days of COVID. She painted and worked on collages with a fervor. When she looked up, restrictions were lifted; her local family could visit and her far- away family could still call her on her iPad. In fact, whoever she can’t see in person, she visits with on her iPad. She’s a pro at it . . . at 91! “I’m so thankful I’m still here. I get another day to be creative. Another day to see my family. Another day to make someone else happy. And remember,” she adds, “it’s very important to stand and walk as tall and straight as you can.” With this, she lifts a graceful hand from the top of her head to the sky. Ahhh . . . there’s the dancer.

What’s YOUR Stay-at-Home Wisdom? How do you pass the time? Are you learning something new? Are you making headway on a project? What advice would you give to seniors confined to their homes and their family members? Even if you think your accomplishment is small, it might be exactly what another member needs to hear. Please call or email Lynn Adams in Activities (*13 or [email protected]).

Thinking! – Rem Stokes As the world shut down, Rem Stokes let his creative, agile, practical mind explore all the “whats and what-ifs” that came to him: What if this lasts more than a few months? What if some aspects of the shutdown endure because they make sense? What’s going to happen to my investments? What businesses will take-off/thrive now? Rem thinks this way all the time, but in March he made his mind pandemic-centric in time to get in on the ground floor of creative businesses that have leaped ahead this year. This pleases him to no end, somewhat because of the result, but more so because of the mental gymnastics he had to perform quickly to get where he is. Young stock market hotshots today have nothing on Rem! From Marilyn Helberg, Member Advisory Committee (MAC) Chairman Thank you so much, all of you who completed the MAC survey: 140 of you responded! We’re in the process of tabulating your responses and acknowledging all comments. We’re on track to deliver these to management and you in December. We value and appreciate your input immensely. From Dorothy Fisk, Items for Mission projects Here is an easy way to help others. Collect the following items: fronts of greeting cards, canceled postage stamps (leave 1/4 inch around the edge of stamp), soda-can tabs, and empty pill bottles. Some are sent to an Indian mission where they’re repurposed and sold. Others are either sent to medical missionaries in Africa or help fund items at the Ronald McDonald House in Winfield. Until the collection boxes in the Resource Center can be accessed again, please bring your items to the Activities Office, if open, or Member Services in the 1000 or 3000 buildings. Small amounts add up and do GOOD!
