The collection consists of script material, correspondence, photographic material, printed material, and audio recordings documenting Goodman's prolific career writing for produced and unproduced television and radio projects. Biography Harold (Hal) Goodman was a comedy writer whose career began in radio programming. Originally from the east coast, Goodman moved to Los Angeles in the 1940's sometime after being signed by the James L. Saphier Agency. Throughout the 1940's and early 1950's Goodman collaborated on radio scripts for Bob Hope, Milton Berle and The Martin and Lewis Show radio programs. Goodman began writing for television programs in the 1950's, working briefly on such shows as The Red Skelton Show and The Steve Allen Show. Johnny Carson, also a writer for Red Skelton at the time, later worked with Goodman on his 1955 program The Johnny Carson Show. Goodman also wrote for a number of musical variety television programs, including The Carol Burnett Show, The Flip Wilson Show, The Julie Andrews Hour, and The Jerry Lewis Show. It was around this time Goodman began collaborating with Larry Klein, a fellow television writer and producer, and the two would continue to collaborate for the rest of Goodman's career. When The Tonight Show featuring Johnny Carson moved from New York to California in 1972, Goodman and Klein joined the writing team. Goodman was nominated for Emmy Awards on a number of occasion throughout his career, but garnered only one for his work on The Flip Wilson Show, in 1971. Goodman died in 1997 in Los Angeles, CA from prostate cancer. Scope and Content The collection consists of materials related to the career of comedy writer Hal Goodman. The papers include script material, correspondence, photographic material, audio cassette recordings, and printed material documenting Goodman's prolific career writing for produced and unproduced television and radio projects. The bulk of the collection is comprised of various drafts of sketches, scripts, and script pages for television projects including The Tonight Show, The Flip Wilson Show, The Steve Allen Show, and the 1960s television series Margie, among others. Additionally there is a small amount of material reflecting Goodman's radio writings including The Martin and Lewis Show. In addition, there are also files for unidentified projects which may have been for radio and/or television projects. Additional material includes a small number of notes written to Goodman by the creative talents he worked with including Johnny Carson, a small number of photographs, and audio cassette recordings related to Johnny Carson projects in which Goodman was related.     Journal of Ethnic and Cultural Studies Copyright 2020 2020, Vol. 7, No. 3, 142-162 ISSN: 2149-1291 http://dx.doi.org/10.29333/ejecs/392 Racism’s Back Door: A Mixed-Methods Content Analysis of Transformative Sketch Comedy in the US from 1960-2000 Jennifer Kim1 Independent Scholar, USA Abstract: Comedy that challenges race ideology is transformative, widely available, and has the potential to affect processes of identity formation and weaken hegemonic continuity and dominance. Outside of the rules and constraints of serious discourse and cultural production, these comedic corrections thrive on discursive and semiotic ambiguity and temporality. Comedic corrections offer alternate interpretations overlooked or silenced by hegemonic structures and operating modes of cultural common sense. The view that their effects are ephemeral and insignificant is an incomplete and misguided evaluation. Since this paper adopts Hegel’s understanding of comedy as the spirit (Geist) made material, its very constitution, and thus its power, resides in exposing the internal thought processes often left unexamined, bringing them into the foreground, dissecting them, and exposing them for ridicule and transformation. In essence, the work of comedy is to consider all points of human processing and related structuration as fair game. The phenomenological nature of comedy calls for a micro-level examination. Select examples from The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1968), The Richard Pryor Show (1977), Saturday Night Live (1990), and Chappelle’s Show (2003) will demonstrate representative ways that comedy attacks and transforms racial hegemony. Keywords: comedy, cultural sociology, popular culture, race and racism, resistance. During periods of social unrest, what micro-level actions are available to the public? Or, how does a particular society respond to inequities that are widely shared and agreed upon as intolerable aspects of a society? One popular method to challenge a hegemonic structure, and to survive it, is comedy.

Built 1924-25; architects, Crane & Franzheim. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1024, Lot 7. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the ANTA Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-three witnesses spoke in favor of designation. Two witnesses spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The ANTA Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in the 1924-25, the ANTA was constructed for the Theater Guild as a subscription playhouse, named the Guild Theater. The fourrling Guild members, including actors, playwrights, designers, attorneys and bankers, formed the Theater Guild to present high quality plays which they believed would be artistically superior to the current offerings of the commercial Broadway houses. More than just an auditorium, however, the Guild Theater was designed to be a theater resource center, with classrooms, studios, and a library. The theater also included the rrost up-to-date staging technology.

This compilation gives us the clearest and most concise guide yet to the production and technical operations of television’s early days and the network that pioneered so much of the new medium. As you will see, many shows were done as “remotes” in NBC radio studios with in-house mobile camera units, and predate the official conversion date which signifies the studio now has its own control room and stage lighting.
