Canadian National Championships 2016 – Winnipeg Hi Everyone, First of all, apologies for not having kept up more in the last year. It’s been my busiest year yet, and I am quite the workaholic, apparently - although maybe I’m still in denial about that. I wanted to point your attention to the RA Centre's Andrew D'Souza, Alex Bruce, and Liam Woodside for their performances thus far at the Canadian National Badminton Championships, here in wonderful-winter-wonderland-Winnipeg! Andrew will play the men's singles final today. Alex is in two finals, the mixed doubles and women's doubles. Finally, Liam is playing the 3/4 playoff, after having reached the semis in men's singles. Canadian Olympic Activity Challenge Badminton
CANADIAN OLYMPIC ACTIVITY CHALLENGE Badminton is a racquet sport that started in India in the mid-1800s. Players use a racquet to hit a shuttlecock (also known as a “shuttle” or a “birdie”) over a net. It has been an Olympic sport since the BADMINTON Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games. Athletes compete at the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. Badminton can be played with either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles). The players or pairs stand on opposite sides of a net, and take turns serving a shuttlecock with a racquet. The players rally the shuttlecock back and forth over the net, and each side may only hit the shuttlecock once. A player or team wins a point when the shuttlecock lands on their opponent’s side of the court. A game ends when one side wins 21 points. A match is the best of three games. A shuttlecock is cone-shaped and made of overlapping feathers or plastic. The round tip is made of cork. The feathers create drag, causing the shuttle to slow down. However, when it is smashed or served, a shuttle can move faster than a tennis ball. This can make the game very fast-paced and exciting. Badminton players learn a wide variety of strokes like the forehand (like hitting with the palm) or the backhand (like hitting with the knuckles). A player learns which stroke to use in different situations. A badminton player must be very physically ﬁt and able to move quickly in all directions. The final day of registration saw the likes of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo amongst the latest entries that will be in contention at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from 9-14 April. Les Jeux occupent également une place spéciale dans le cœur des Canadiens, puisque c’est au Canada qu’ils avaient vu le jour : nous avons été les premiers à les accueillir à Hamilton, en 1930. Ces Jeux sont une compétition de calibre mondial et ils jouent un rôle important pour le sport canadien, en plus d’occuper une place de choix au calendrier sportif international. Soyez assurés que tous les Canadiens et Canadiennes vous encourageront avec enthousiasme alors que vous déployez toute votre force physique et mentale ici à Glasgow.
