  • Canadian Olympic Activity Challenge Badminton
CANADIAN OLYMPIC ACTIVITY CHALLENGE Badminton is a racquet sport that started in India in the mid-1800s. Players use a racquet to hit a shuttlecock (also known as a “shuttle” or a “birdie”) over a net. It has been an Olympic sport since the BADMINTON Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games. Athletes compete at the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. Badminton can be played with either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles). The players or pairs stand on opposite sides of a net, and take turns serving a shuttlecock with a racquet. The players rally the shuttlecock back and forth over the net, and each side may only hit the shuttlecock once. A player or team wins a point when the shuttlecock lands on their opponent’s side of the court. A game ends when one side wins 21 points. A match is the best of three games. A shuttlecock is cone-shaped and made of overlapping feathers or plastic. The round tip is made of cork. The feathers create drag, causing the shuttle to slow down. However, when it is smashed or served, a shuttle can move faster than a tennis ball. This can make the game very fast-paced and exciting. Badminton players learn a wide variety of strokes like the forehand (like hitting with the palm) or the backhand (like hitting with the knuckles). A player learns which stroke to use in different situations. A badminton player must be very physically fit and able to move quickly in all directions. To learn more about badminton or to find a local club please visit www.badminton.ca FEATURED INDIA During the mid-1800s, India was ruled by Great Britain.

  • Sport History
Carrara Sports and Leisure Badminton Centre (CSL) Sport History Badminton Origins and the sport today: The roots of badminton date back more than 2000 years to China. Initially known as battledore and shuttlecock, it developed in British India and became known as badminton in the 19th century, after the name of the home of the Duke of Beaufort where the sport was popularised – its first set of written rules still form the basis of the game today. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) was established in 1934 (initially known as the International Badminton Federation) and is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with five regional confederations and 183 member associations. While hugely popular in Asia, there is also extensive participation in Europe, North America and Australia. Major matches in Indonesia and Malaysia regularly attract crowds of 15,000 and more than 1.1 billion people watched the sport’s Olympic Games debut on TV in 1992. Badminton at the Commonwealth Games: Badminton is one of 10 core sports at the Commonwealth Games, meaning it has to be included in the program. The other nine are: aquatics (diving and swimming), athletics, boxing, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby sevens, squash and weightlifting. It was a demonstration sport at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games, pre-dating its official appearance as an Olympic sport on the program of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games. England, Malaysia, India, Canada, Australia and Singapore traditionally dominate the sport at Commonwealth Games, although Canada’s Michelle Li won gold at Glasgow 2014. Badminton is one of six competitions to feature mixed-team events on the program (mixed doubles and mixed team).
