THE MEDIUMSHIP OF ARNOLD CLARE Leader of the Trinity of Spiritual Fellowship by HARRY EDWARDS Captain, Indian Army Reserve of Officers. Lieutenant, Home Guard. Parliamentary Candidate North Camberwell 1929 and North-West Camberwell 1936. London County Council Candidate 1928, 1931, 1934, 1937. Leader of the Balham Psychic Research Society. Author of ‘The Mediumship of Jack Webber’ First Published by: THE PSYCHIC BOOK CLUB 144 High Holborn, London, W.C. 1 FOREWORD Apart from the report by Mr. W. Harrison of the early development of Mr. Arnold Clare's mediumship, the descriptions of the séances, the revelations of Peter and the writing of this book took place during the war years 1940-41. As enemy action on London intensified, the physical séances ceased and in the autumn of 1940 were replaced by discussion circles. The first few circles took place in the author's house before a company of about twenty people. It was soon appreciated that the intelligence (known as Peter), speaking through the entranced medium, was of a high order and worthy of reporting. So these large discussion groups gave way to a small circle held in the medium's house, attended by Mr. and Mrs. Clare, Mr. and Mrs. Hart, Mrs. Edwards and the author, an occasional visitor and with Mrs. W. B. Cleveland as stenographer. The procedure at these circles would be that, in normal white light, Mr. Clare would enter into a trance state. His Guide, Peter, taking control, would discourse upon the selected topic answering all questions fluently and without hesitation. Frequently, during these sittings, the air-raid sirens would be heard and the local anti- aircraft guns would be in action.

  • SPIRITUALISM the Past, the Present and the Future?
SPIRITUALISM The Past, The Present and The Future? Stewart Alexander Introduction My deep involvement in Spiritualism may be traced back almost fifty years, during which time I have gradually amassed an extensive library of books, cassette and CD recordings plus various Spiritual paraphernalia. Amongst the collection are long out-of-print Spiritualist and Psychical Research books and also recordings of elderly Spiritualists (most of whom have since have departed this earth) recollecting their past séance room experiences with Physical mediums who today we can only read about. Additionally, I am the proud possessor of such items as Mrs Maud Gunning’s one time celluloid séance room trumpet. Although a powerful Physical medium, she was in many ways a private medium whose name rarely came before the public, so that sadly her wonderful séance room manifestations are largely unknown to present day Spiritualists. In respect of the fascinating experience recordings in my possession, they have now sat on my library shelves for (in most instances) well over 20 years, during which time doubtlessly they have sadly deteriorated. However, in recent times, I have determined to preserve them whilst there is still time. Therefore the long process of transferring them onto CD has begun, and for that I am greatly indebted to several of my aquaintances who, with the necessary equipment, kindly undertook the task on my behalf. Once completed, various extracts were selected and then grouped together onto ‘Compilation’ CD’s which are now available to Spiritualists and all other interested parties. For anyone interested in the Physical phenomena of the Séance room, those accounts may well transcend the ‘boggle factor’ and will perhaps convey to the listener the reason why the Spiritualist movement was once so very vibrant and progressive.

Journal of Scientifi c Exploration, Vol. 33, No. 1, pp. 73–113, 2019 0892-3310/19 HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Musings on Materializations: Eric J. Dingwall on “The Plasma Theory” CARLOS S. ALVARADO Parapsychology Foundation [email protected] Submitted October 27, 2018; Accepted December 14, 2018; Published March 30, 2019 DOI: https://doi.org/10.31275/2019.1381 Creative Commons License: CC-BY-NC Abstract—The psychical research literature has many examples of séance room materialization phenomena. This article consists of a reprint of, and a commentary about, Eric J. Dingwall’s paper “The Plasma Theory,” published in the Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research in 1921. Dingwall discussed some of the previously published ideas on the topic, and empha- sized those related to mediums Eva C. and Kathleen Goligher. The purpose of the current article is not to provide evidence for the phenomena, but to present relevant contextual information about the article, additional bibli- ography, and theoretical concepts, some of which are forgotten today. Introduction One of the phenomena of physical mediumship is materializations, or appearances of ephemeral bodies (or parts of), and other forms, or things, in the séance room. This includes the production of ectoplasm, a subtle matter assuming various shapes and appearances—such as mists, plaster, and textile-like products—that may change into things such as hands, faces, and whole bodies. The topic fl ourished in previous eras and is largely ignored today by parapsychologists, particularly in terms of research. This is in part due to its association with fraud (e.g., Nahm 2014, 2016, Puharich 1960/2008, Schrenck-Notzing 1924, Wallace 1906), and the lack of mediums who produce the phenomenon, or who are willing to be investigated under controlled conditions.

  • The Development and Phenomena of a Circle for Physical Mediumship
Journal of Scientifi c Exploration, Vol. 28, No. 2, pp. 229–283, 2014 0892-3310/14 RESEARCH ARTICLE The Development and Phenomena of a Circle for Physical Mediumship MICHAEL NAHM Freiburg, Germany Submitted 1/21/2014, Accepted 5/15/2014, Pre-published 5/28/2014 Abstract—The present paper describes the development and the phe- nomena of a circle for physical mediumship, based predominantly on my own observations. Over the course of four and a half years, I have partici- pated in 21 sittings. Typical phenomena include unusual movements of a table, raps on the room walls and the ceiling, various luminous and psycho- kinetic phenomena, the generation of supposed ectoplasm, and apports. I will describe the controls applied during the sittings and my personal involvement in accompanying the development of the phenomena, and explain why I finally arrived at the conclusion that considerable parts of the phenomena were produced by fraudulent means. Keywords: Physical mediumship— raps— psychokinesis—ectoplasm— apports—circle—fraud Introduction The phenomena described in the context of physical mediumship belong to the most puzzling occurrences that can be studied. According to the vast literature on physical mediumship, typical phenomena include the following:1 audible raps and knocks originating from a table, or from the walls and the ceiling of the séance room (Carrington 1909, Crawford 1919, Maxwell 1905, Owen & Sparrow 1976, Paul et al. 1963, Richards 1982, Schrenck-Notzing 1923:602–609, Schwab 1923) unusual movements and levitations of a

  • Jack Webber – Physical Medium
Seeking to Establish Knowledge and Understanding /www.the-voice-box.com /[email protected] Jack Webber – Physical Medium Jack Webber, a British medium who was still active in the last war. Jack was a Welsh ex-miner; Jack Webber was born in 1907 into a Christian family, but was introduced to Spiritualism through his wife's acceptance of this. He discovered his mediumistic abilities when attending a home circle, and messages began to flow through table- tipping; in time, he developed trance, and following his guide's instructions, 'development came quickly and levitation of the trumpets and objects followed soon after'.(1) Subsequently, he developed healing faculties. His mediumship continued to develop until a stage when communicators' voices not only spoke through the trumpets, but independently of them, and there were also materializations. As a number of other physical mediums, he was accompanied by noises, object movement and voices when he was not conducting a séance, and his presence also affected nearby electrical apparatus. Jack Webber demonstrated his mediumistic abilities throughout this country in home circles, and in public demonstrations to as many as five hundred persons; shortly before his passing, he gave up to two hundred being secured during a demonstration as he was conscious of the possibility that accusations of fraud could be made against him. Maurice Barbanell was one person who testified to what he witnessed during a séance with Jack Webber as the medium; in this, infra-red photography was permitted and high quality photographs were taken of trumpets, levitated by the ectoplasm originating from the medium, and of table levitation.
