  • Kanan Devi Remembering a Lost Archive
Kanan Devi Remembering a Lost Archive One would hear the soft melodies of sapnon me koyi aata hai from a distance as a neighbour played his old records of, with my grandmother humming to it. An incredible performer, singer, actress extraordinaire – Kanan Bala has vanished from public visuality in a city that once hailed her as a superstar. The occasional mentions of New Theatres, of the peripheral inclusion in discussing male heroes – the public at large has forgotten Kanan Bala’s phenomenal journey from the child-artist to the stardom. Kanan Devi is the voice of a time which unscathed by the playback; Kanan Devi is the unrivalled face from Calcutta who ruled the box-offices nationwide. In a time when the stigmatized world of entertainment offered little space for women, Kanan Devi pioneered in the industry, shone bright as a star, and inspired a future for women artists. With indeterminate lineage, Kanan Devi paved her way into the world of cinema with a humble audition, eventually resulting in her first film, Jaidev in 1926. Playing both Radha and Krishna in this silent film, Kanan delivered a graceful radiance that had no inhibition for the camera. This series of old photographs from a rare private collection curates a narrative that is infused with the personal and the public live(s) of Kanan Bala. Extending over a range of photographers captured by press, crew and studio-photographers like Panna Sen, Sri Subinoy, P Sarkar, Dhiren Dev and other anonymous ones, this collection reactivates memories of the journey of a timeless woman artist.

Remembering the ‘unknown’ Soumitra, a ‘cricketing rival’ to his mentor Satyajit Ray By - TIMESOFINDIA.COMSankha GhoshNov 16, 2020, 11:40 IST Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Satyajit Ray in shot discussion. Pic Courtesy: Twitter They had worked in as many as 14 films together in three decades. Some of Soumitra Chattopadhyay’s memorable works were crafted by none other than Satyajit Ray, whose films received critical acclaim and brought home several prestigious awards worldwide, and put India on the world cinema map. But not many people know Soumitra who passed away on November 15 after his long battle against COVID-19 once appeared as a rival to Ray, his mentor, on the 22 yards! “Soumitra Chattopadhyay was a big admirer of cricket. He, my father Dileep Mukherjee, and Soumendu Roy (Satyajit Ray’s most trusted cinematographer) used to live nearby and were addicted to sports. They would often meet each other to have a game of cricket. Not just the gentleman’s game but also badminton, football. They were sports fanatic and to see them trying their hands in sports was a treat to watch,” recalls former Bengal cricket team all-rounder Joydeep Mukherjee in an exclusive chat with ETimes. Have a close look at this particular photo from the 70s. You can see ahead of a charity match, it’s march past – among others Master Babloo (holding aloft the flag), Satyajit Ray leading the Hemanta Kumar XI, and Jahar Ganguly the captain of Kanan Devi’s XI. While Uttam Kumar walks just behind Satyajit Ray, it was Soumitra Chatterjee who can be seen as Jahar Ganguly’s deputy.

  • Early Indian Talkies: Voice, Performance and Aura
Early Indian Talkies: Voice, Performance and Aura Madhuja Mukherjee This paper studies the ‘coming of sound’ in Indian cinema, in relation to the debates such technical change generated in the Indian context, and the ways in which sound and music were negotiated within popular cinematic forms. In connection with this, I would also like to address the question of a ‘gendered’ voice and performance in early talkies to illustrate how various representations of sound and music were produced through a cultural politics. In my attempt to study the deployment of music in popular cinemas, I examine the subject of classical music (and songs), and its varied articulations in the pre-play back era. I wish to read how the ‘aura’ of performances, which is apparently lost through mechanical reproductions, may be reinstituted through certain kinds of performances within specific contexts. I use a New Theatres Ltd. [1] film, Street Singer (1938), and K.L. Saigal’s enunciations of the ragas in the film, to elucidate my point. I 100% talkies: A historical overview The first Indian talkie Alam Ara , based on a popular stage play, produced by the Imperial Film Company [2] and directed by A. Irani was released on 14th March, 1931 [3]. Irani had seen Hollywood’s 40% Sound film Showboat and decided to bring 100% sound to India.
