Slavica Slovaca, 53, 2018, No 2, pp 103-117 (Bratislava). This article identifies and explores one important phenomenon of the intellectual history of Slovakia in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. This phenomenon, referred to by Daniel Krman the younger as Dilemmata Tyrnaviensia (the Trnava dilemmas), is here discussed against the broader backdrop of its sources and influence. The article is a contribution towards a better understaning of the impact of religious controversies on the intellectual, societal and political development of Slovakia around 1700. Slovakia, confessional polemics, Martinus Szent-Ivany (1633-1705), Daniel Krman, Jr. (1663-1740), Quindecim dilemmata (1699), Constantia in orthodoxo consensu (1702). Roku 1702 napísal tridsaťdeväťročný Daniel Krman, v tom čase farár v Myjave, historicko- -apologetické dielo Constantia in orthodoxo consensu Ecclesiarum Hungarico-Lutheranarum cum Wittenbergensi aliisque Γνησίως Lutheranis a prima reformatione (Stálosť v pravovernej zhode uhorsko-luterských cirkví s wittenberskou cirkvou a inými rýdzo luterskými cirkvami od počiatkov reformácie).1 Dielo vzniklo z poverenia brančsko-čachtického kontubernia a „ďal- ších bratov“, ako sa uvádza na titulnom liste, a predstavuje cenný prameň k dejinám luterskej ortodoxie v Uhorsku. Bezprostredným podnetom Krmanovej obhajoby ortodoxie evanjelických cirkevných zborov bol súbor pätnástich dilem (Quindecim dilemmata), ktoré anonymne publi- koval jezuita Martin Sentiváni-Svätojánsky tlačou Trnavskej univerzity r. 1699.2 Krman o tom informuje na začiatku svojej rozsiahlej práce nasledovne: Téma, na ktorú sa podujímam, má do činenia s bezpečnosťou uhorsko-evanjelických cirk- ví. Veď kto by nevedel, že varadínsky biskup a cisársko-kráľovský radca Juraj Báršoň sa v spise Veritas toti mundo declarata roku 1672 pokúšal dokázať, že cisársko-kráľovské veličenstvo nie je viazané v Uhorsku tolerovať luterskú a kalvínsku odnož, pričom sa od- volával najmä na to, že luteráni sa už vraj nepridržiavajú augsburského vyznania a kalvíni helvétskeho a že krajinské zákony iné náboženstvá ako tieto dve a pápeženecké v kráľov- stve nepripúšťajú. Kto by nevedel, že medzi pätnástimi trnavskými dilemami,3 ktoré boli roku 1699 „čo najsrdečnejšie“ venované všetkým nekatolíkom v Uhorsku, sa v 9. dileme znova omieľa tá istá báršoňovská omáčka, a to týmito slovami: Zhoduje sa luterská alebo kalvínska vierouka v tej podobe, ako sa v súčasnosti predkladá v Uhorsku, s augsburským a helvétskym vyznaním, alebo sa nezhoduje? Ak nie, potom si nemôže nárokovať slobodné praktizovanie v Uhorsku, lebo to sa povoľuje iba augsburskému a helvétskemu vyznaniu. ∗ Mgr. Tyrnaviae 1699. 3 Krman nazval dilemy „trnavskými“, pretože boli publikované anonymne. Odvoláva sa však menovite na M. Sentiváni- ho citujúc ďalší z jeho polemických spisov Lutheranicum nusquam et nunquam (1702). 103 Ale ak sa súčasná vierouka luteránov zhoduje s augsburským vyznaním, pýtam sa: S kto- rým? Lebo augsburské vyznanie bolo štyrikrát napísané, vydané a zmenené, a každé z nich je iné atď.4 Krman pokladal za potrebné obhájiť pravovernosť evanjelikov v Uhorsku, pričom sa odvolal na varovanie leidenského teológa Friedricha Spanheima ml., ktorý vo svojej polemickej reakcii Ἐχθρῶν δῶρα ἄδωρα dilemy označil za predzvesť nových útokov voči uhorským evanjelickým cirkvám.5 V prvej časti príspevku sa pozrieme na Sentivániho Quindecim dilemmata (t. j. „Tr- navské dilemy“) a ich dobový literárny kontext, v druhej si priblížime Krmanovu reakciu naň. Napriek tomu, že slovenský jezuita Martin Sentiváni je našej odbornej verejnosti známy najmä ako autor viaczväzkového prírodovedno-historicko-filozoficko-teologického diela Curi- osiora et selectiora variarum scientiarum miscellanea (Trnava 1689-1709), do spoločenského a literárneho života v európskom meradle oveľa významnejšie zasiahol polemicko-teologickými spismi, ktoré publikoval až na sklonku svojho života (1699-1705, niektoré vyšli posmrtne). Sé- riu polemík otvoril Sentiváni krátkym spisom, v ktorom ako novoročný dar (xenium novi anni) pre nekatolíkov v Uhorsku predložil pätnásť dilem týkajúcich sa vierouky a náboženskej praxe evanjelickej cirkvi a. v. a reformovanej cirkvi v Uhorsku. V Micraeliovom filozofickom lexikóne (1653) sa nachádza nasledovná definícia pojmu dilema: Dilema je disjunktívny dvojitý sylogizmus, ktorý prostredníctvom disjunkcie členov dostane protivníka do úzkych, takže bez ohľadu na to, či si vyberie tú či onú propozíciu, usvedčí ho. Nazýva sa aj rohatý sylogizmus alebo tiež krokodílí sylogizmus, lebo ako krokodíl, keď ho nasleduješ, zavedie ťa do Nílu; keď pred ním utekáš, beží za tebou a dolapí ťa; tak aj dilema, čokoľvek tvrdíš alebo popieraš, vždy ťa dobehne.6 Dilema bola obľúbenou formou argumentácie vo vieroučných polemikách už v čase sv. Hiero- nyma a Augustína a veľmi hojne sa vyskytuje aj u polemických teológov 16. a 17. storočia. O spä- tosti dilematického sylogizmu s náboženskou polemikou svedčí aj fakt, že v novovekých učeb- niciach logiky sa ako príklad dilemy uvádzali práve citáty z polemických diel cirkevných otcov (u nás napr. u P. Makóa a J. K. Horváta).7 V dôsledku konfesijného rozdelenia Cirkvi sa polemická

    Digraphs in Sava Mrkalj’s Writing System Shuko Nishihara Abstract Sava Mrkalj is known for his role in the reformation of the writing sys- tem of the Serbian literary language, as he proposed the new Cyrillic writing system in his work Salo debeloga jera libo azbukoprotres [Fat of the Thick Jer, or Alphabet Reshuffling](henceforth, Fat of the Thick Jer) (1810). Compared to the system established by Vuk Karadžić, Mrkalj’s writing system is imperfect and transitional, because its alphabet system retains four digraphs (дь, ль, нь, and ть) against the phonemic principle of his reform. This article discusses how Mrkalj’s alphabet system main- tains consistency, reflecting his order of priority. Introduction Modern standard Serbian orthography is based on the principle of one sound corresponding to one letter, and although exceptions exist, the language may be “read as it is written,” to use the words of Johann Christoph Adelung.1 Nineteenth-century Serbian linguist, folklorist, and 1 Johann Christoph Adelung (1732–1806), German grammarian and philolo- gist. This article will show how Mrkalj’s writing system, put forth in Fat of the Thick Jer (1810), was linked to Karadžić’s orthography.

[email protected] Abstract: The non-elimination of the consequences of occupation in some parts of Yugoslavia in World War II, as well as preventing and obstructing from the Yugoslav state the elimination of the con- sequences of the war suffering of the Serbian Orthodox Church, will prevent and disable the Church in certain parts of its canonical territory and endanger, destroy and confiscate its property. This will then lead to a new suffering of the Serbian people, while putting the legal successor state of Yugoslavia to additional temptations. Non-return of property to the Serbian Church will be especially in favor of secessionist forces that threaten the territorial integrity of Serbia. Especially in policymaking on the national issue and in relation to the Church. After taking power in the country - by conducting a revolution while waging a war for liberation from occupation - Yugoslavia’s new governing nomenclature, legitimized as such during the Second World War, was not content with establishing a state order, only on the basis of a single, exclusive ideology, but it penetrated the civilizational frameworks of state jurisdiction and went about creating the whole social order.

Harry Jack Hayball Declaration 3 Abstract It is often suggested that the Serbian rebellion in Croatia in 1990-91 was orchestrated by Serbia, and, in particular, by its president Slobodan Milošević personally. Despite the popularity of this interpretation, however, the literature on the break-up of Yugoslavia is yet to offer a focused study of Serbia's role in the descent into conflict in Croatia. Many sources that have become available in recent years remain unused. Through a critical and cautious use of such sources, including extensive interviews with participants in the conflict and contemporary documentation, this thesis aims to fill this gap in the literature and to update our knowledge of this important aspect of the bloody disintegration of Yugoslavia. Honing in on Belgrade's relationships with Serb political and military/paramilitary leaders in Croatia, as well as Serbia's direct involvement in and attitude towards the road to war, it concludes that the existing focus on Milošević's Serbia has been misplaced. Serbia's stance towards Croatia was hardline, but Belgrade's influence over the Croatian Serbs was limited and its direct involvement in events minimal. Milošević did not have a grand plan to orchestrate violence in Croatia, and the leaders of the Serbian rebellion in Croatia were fundamentally independent and autonomous actors, who, far from being Milošević's puppets, were often in conflict with him.

Institute of Ethnography of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts Serbia) FOLK ART IN CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP CONTEXT: THE ROLE OF GOD WORSHIPPERS PRAYER SONGS WITH THE SERBS TODAY Since its origins, Christian church music has been a part of the musical tradition of local communities.5 Initially, simple melodies were used during liturgical services, which were performed by all the assembled Christians. During the first centuries of Christianity, Christians were persecuted for their faith, which impeded the greater development of Christian art. When the persecution ceased, liturgy as well as church music which is an inte- gral part of it, began to develop over time. During this research, I investigated the relationship between folk and church music in the contemporary period, that is, during the 20th and early 21st century in Serbia. I wanted to answer the question of whether and in what way folk art from this period was part of the liturgies. The attitude of church hierarchy, clergy, church singers and believers towards church music, as well as the possible influence of folk art on the church art is a separate topic. The purpose is to show that wine can function as a marker of cultural boundaries and thus an instrument in the process of identification, as it was in the case for Christian Serbs under the Ottoman Empire. Wine remains deeply rooted in the culture even once it has apparently lost this function. Several juxtapositions with the role of rakija, another culturally meaningful beverage in Serbia, are offered. Given the historical perspective, the paper draws in the argumentation upon literature, both scientific and belles-lettres, supported by observation methods for current developments. In fact, rakija, a strong alcoholic beverage produced by distillation of fermented fruit, known in Italy as grappa and in Hungary and Romania as palinka, is a flagship product of the whole Balkan Peninsula, associated with the cultures and cuisines of the region. When I arrived in Belgrade with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to conduct a research on the links between Serbian identity and wine culture, I heard this opinion from many Serbs, and there were few to dispute this self-definition of their compatriots.

    Traian Stoianovich Society and the Reason of Language* The European Enlightenment found root in the Balkans, a backwa­ ter of Europe, even a non-Europe, in response to the common interest of European and Balkan thinkers in proxemics or the interrelationships between language and space. Balkan proponents of Enlightenment thought, in effect, reconceptualized the place of their own cultures in the world by reference to what Georg Simmel called “centripetality”. But their centripetality was not a simple identification with the European centers and cultures of their admiration. It also included embracing the Enlightenment mode of thought as a way of thinking specifically about language and space. As a result, they rethought their own languages and territories1. The Enlightenment outlook introduced among its Balkan propo­ nents, as in western Europe, an era of rising expectations and new “imaginaries” —new representations of the world, new beliefs and de­ sires.
