Cold seeps fluids provide an additional source of energy for various sulfide- and 27 hydrocarbon-harvesting bacteria, often in symbiosis with invertebrates, attracting a variety of other 28 organisms including crustaceans (e.g., Levin 2005; Vanreusel et al. 2009; Vrijenhoek 2013). El intermareal rocoso de Veracruz, México, es un ecosistema que resguarda una gran biodiversidad. Sin embargo, no se ha reconocido su relevancia como con otros ecosistemas marinos. El objetivo de este estudio fue elaborar las primeras listas florística y faunística del intermareal rocoso de El Pulpo, localizada en el municipio de Cazones, Veracruz. Para ello, desde el 2013 a 2016 se efectuaron muestreos en la franja intermareal rocosa en periodos de marea baja para el registro de la biota marina y la recolecta de material biológico para su identificación taxonómica. Además, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica para complementar las listas de especies. Se registraron 51 especies de macroalgas bentónicas, una especie de fanerógama, 186 especies de invertebrados, y cinco especies de vertebrados para un total de 243 especies marinas. Las Rhodophyta son la ficoflora más representada con 29 es- pecies, mientras que el Phylum Mollusca lo es para la fauna con 139 especies. La mayoría de las especies marinas se registraron en el intermareal medio e inferior; por consiguiente la menor riqueza se registró en el intermareal superior y la constituyen algas filamentosas y foliosas, así como moluscos y crustáceos con hábitos ramoneadores y filtradores. -

The species list includes 96 species and 48 families. Six species are dominant (Bittiolum varium, Costoanachis semiplicata, Brachidontes exustus, Crassostrea virginica, Chione cancellata, and Mulinia lateralis) and 25 are commercially important (e.g., Strombus alatus, Busycoarctum coarctatum, Triplofusus giganteus, Anadara transversa, Noetia ponderosa, Brachidontes exustus, Crassostrea virginica, Argopecten irradians, Argopecten gibbus, Chione cancellata, Mercenaria campechiensis, and Rangia flexuosa). -

Dominici, Museo di Storia Naturale, Università di Firenze, Via La Pira 4, I-50121 Firenze, Italy; !$`"$ Fossil marine mollusks from Monte Postale, about one mile NE of Bolca (Verona and Vicenza Provinces) and 300 m N of the “Pesciara” (see the map in Papazzoni & Trevisani, 2006), were collected and catalogued at least since the 18th`[ seen, in the second decade of the 19th century, as means to date the rocks, and the already O"~P`[` geologists. In 1823, on the footsteps of Alberto Fortis (1778), Alexandre Brongniart drew stratigraphic sections and collected fossils in the Vicenza province, assigning the Bolca and Roncà invertebrates to one and the same geological interval. In the newly introduced 5~`[` Paris Basin. This meant to Brongniart that they belonged to the older Tertiary, and were distinct from the fossil shells described by Giambattista Brocchi in 1814, typifying the younger Tertiary (Rudwick, 2005). “I can relate the calcareous-trappic terrains of Northern Italy to the lower formation, the most ancient of the upper sediment [i.e., the Tertiary]. I’m struck by the analogy between these two terrains, their utter similarity under almost any aspect. Nothing of the lower terrains of the Parisian limestone is missing in Bolca, Roncà, etc. -

Measuring and Interpreting Predation on Gastropod Shells by Emily Sue Stafford A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences University of Alberta © Emily Sue Stafford, 2014 ABSTRACT This dissertation focuses on problems and progress in studying crushing predation on gastropods in the Modern and the fossil record. Although crushing predation tends to be destructive, it is possible to gather data on crushing predation from multiple angles. Chapter 2 applies an ichnotaxonomic name, Caedichnus, to the trace created by peeling crab predators. Chapter 3 the relationship between shell repair frequency and predation mortality in a modern gastropod community. In this case, repair frequency was likely a direct product of variation in predator abundance and strength. Chapter 4 focused on hermit crabs, an organism that inhabits gastropod shells and exposes those shells to predation even after the original gastropod inhabitant has died. The predatory crabs showed no preference for snail or hermit crab prey, which may mean that hermit crab habitation does not significantly alter the crab-on-snail predation patterns present in a shell assemblage. Chapter 5 expanded on previous work by the author, using a method by G.J. Vermeij to estimate crushing predation in a gastropod assemblage even when individual instances of predatory damage cannot be identified. Vermeij Crushing Analysis (VCA) uses drilled shells to establish a baseline of taphonomic damage in a shell assemblage; the chapter refines and examines this method more deeply, in addition to applying the method to compare predation on modern and fossil gastropod shell assemblages. -

Around 62,000 species and 13,000 genera of gastropods that are reported throughout the world. Recently, number of species will exceed more than 150,000 species. One of the most diverse group i.e. Gastropods under phylum mollusc that are extremely varied in morphology (shape), feeding behavior, reproductive strategies, habitat range and size. They have the widest range of ecological niches of all molluscs. Gastropods are among the oldest known fossils, with their shells being found in rocks dating 540 million years ago. Most of these species that are reported till now that remained unchanged for over 350 million years. Objective:In the present study, we focused on various snails that are found in fresh and marine water including terrestrial places.
