Charity www.bethestaryouare.org Antonio is a young Venetian man and one of the most successful merchants of Venice, known for being kind and generous. His friend Bassanio wishes to travel to the city of Belmont to woo Portia, one of the most beautiful women in the world left with an amazing amount of money left after the death of her father. Bassanio asks Antonio if he can fund his trip to Belmont and Antonio, who is poor as of the moment as his ships are at sail, agrees as long as Bassanio can find a loaner, who turns out to be Shylock. Shylock hates Antonio because his racist attitude towards Jews, shown by Shylock being insulted and spat on by Antonio for being a Jew. Shylock decrees that if Antonio is unable to repay his loan before a specific date, he may take a pound of flesh from any part of Antonio’s body that he chooses. Antonio accepts the offer on account of being “surprised by Shylock’s generosity.” Bassanio leaves towards Belmont with his friend Gratanio. In Belmont, Portia’s father’s will is refraining her from marrying, stating that each of her suitors must choose correctly from one of three caskets -- gold, silver, and lead -- and if they choose correctly, they get Portia. If they are incorrect, they must leave and never marry. The first suitor chooses the gold casket because the casket says "Choose me and get what most men desire", which must be Portia, as what all men desire is Portia. -

At this point, do you think Shylock is serious about the pound of flesh he demands as collateral for Antonio’s loan for Bassanio? Why or why not? 2. In 2.3. Jessica leaves her (Jewish) father for her (Christian) husband. Does her desertion create sympathy for Shylock? Or do we cheer her action? Is her “conversion” an uplifting one? 3. Shylock’s speech in 3.1.58–73 may be the most famous of the entire play. After reading this speech, review Ann Barton’s comments on the performing of Shylock and write a paragraph on what you think Shylock means to Shakespeare: “Shylock is a closely observed human being, not a bogeyman to frighten children in the nursery. In the theatre, the part has always attracted actors, and it has been played in a variety of ways. Shylock has sometimes been presented as the devil incarnate, sometimes as a comic villain gabbling absurdly about ducats and daughters. He has also been sentimentalized as a wronged and suffering father nobler by far than the people who triumph over him. Roughly the same range of interpretation can be found in criticism on the play. The TV drama locates Al Basel Hamad Al Basha, Lear’s counterpart, in Upper Egypt and follows a localized version of the king’s tragedy starting from the division of his lands between his two wicked daughters and the disinheritance of his sincere daughter till his downfall. This study examines the relationship between Dahsha and King Lear and investigates the position of the Bard when contextualized in other cultures, revisited in other locales, and retold in other languages. -

INTRODUCTION TO Shakespeare Jeffrey R. Wilson (Undergrad Syllabus ) COURSE DESCRIPTION How does Shakespeare help us understand the world we live in? Why is he the most celebrated English author? How should his plays be performed today? What were his politics, and what are the politics of working with Shakespeare now? Because Shakespeare is such a canonical author, an introduction to Shakespeare is an introduction to literature; it is also an introduction to Shakespeare studies and by extension an introduction to literary studies. Alert to these larger concerns, this course introduces students to some Shakespearean texts and contexts. Emphasis is placed on Shakespeare’s choice of drama— thus the plays are treated as plays, and experienced in performance—and on close reading and interpretation. But interpretation will be done in light of the traditions in and against which Shakespeare wrote, most especially the conventions of the four traditional Shakespearean genres: comedy, tragedy, history, and romance. Our readings will include the texts and contexts of Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Richard III, 1 Henry VI, The Merchant of Venice, and The Tempest, as well as their modern afterlives. We’ll discuss Shakespeare’s reception—how a provincial playwright came to be England’s literary figurehead—and adaptations that span the globe, some of them speaking back to Shakespeare, with fire, in addition to some recent trends in Shakespeare studies, especially interdisciplinary work. All tellers of tales know the lure of the marvelous. The shadow of terror and the sense of wonder lurk in folk tales and ballads, in myths, and in legends. The myth makers of civilization's infancy, the story tellers of olden times, the court minstrels, singing of heroic exploits, the old housewives in chimney corners, telling their tales of fairies, ghosts, and goblins, have all made use of the strange, the terrible, and the wonderful. Shelley, as befitted any boy gifted with a lively curiosity and a vivid imagination, was interested in the wonderful, the mysterious, and the strange. He loved to relate wonder tales to his little sisters; and he invented a fabulous tortoise inhabiting Warnham Pond, an equally fabulous snake of great age, and an old alchemist, who lived in the attic of Field Place. These flights of his versatile imagination excited the children and filled their minds with a pleasurable dread.
