November 2014 Page 3 . What a lovely autumn it has been in ! For the last few months, it has been delightful, and a bit unpredictable, to involve the children a bit more in the morning service, whether through a children's talk, reciting a memory verse that they've learned, or doing actions to accompany a worship song. At our Harvest service on September 28th, they did all of the above, while collecting food donations for Edinburgh charities. They did a great job. After a year of focusing mostly on children's work within Liberton Kirk, I'll be expanding to spend more time at Gracemount Primary School, both in assem- blies, and in our after-school club Transformers. It's very rewarding to support the school in this way, and to deepen my relationship with the pupils, staff, and parents. If you would like to be part of our Sunday club leaders team, or get involved in Transformers at Gracemount, please let me know! We are always happy to include willing people. The chance to teach children about Jesus is an incredible one. God bless you.

One of the greatest blessings over the last couple of weeks has been the growth at Delta, the youth club, which runs each Friday night. It has been incredible to see how the young people, some of whom had just started to come along during the sum- mer, are inviting more and more of their friends, so if you miss two weeks you get a whole bunch of new names to learn! I love it. So please pray with us as we are getting to know and care for these new young people. But also pray for the young people who have been with us for a while, especially the ones who have made a commitment to God, that they would keep their hunger to learn more, and get to know God better and better. Some of our young people have just left high school to go to college, or to start a new job, so please pray for them too, as they are facing a whole new set of challenges - especially how to live out your faith in a new and unknown environment.

You have probably noticed this, but boys love to play football! I know that some girls do as well, but up at it’s mainly the boys who join

Page 4 Liberton Kirk Magazine No.634 our lunch time ‘kick-abouts’. Several years ago the PE department approached the chaplains to help get some of the pupils active at lunch. It was odd that the mind-set of the High School kids was so different to those of the Primary School kids, who love to run and chase all day. So we took a ball, or a Frisbee, and invited the kids to join in. A few years on, and around 30 pupils from S1-S3 (age 12-14) are asking every time they see us, “is it football this lunchtime, yes?”! It is such a positive time. Several of these boys are in regular classroom trouble; but we can praise them for their attitude, skill and teamwork. They return for an afternoon in class satisfied after having eaten, and expelled some useful energy. It’s a win-win situation! Can I say a HUGE thanks to the Kirk folks who made the memorial show for Keane Wallis Bennett run so well? 40 young people performed to an audience of 100 of Keane’s friends and family. The event was run by a handful of 13 year old girls, with no family support. They were so brave and respectful and made a positive impact on their community. They are truly inspirational.

To start off our bi-centenary celebrations we are having a special service on st at 11 o’clock (there will be no 9.30am service that day). The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of , Right Rev. John Chalmers, will be the preacher, and after the service there will be a congregational lunch 1815 in the Kirk Centre. We hope that people who have had a connection with 2015 Liberton Kirk in the past will be able to return for this service, and meet up with old friends over lunch. Can you help by inviting anybody you keep in touch with? Invitations will be available on the Welcome Desks in church (or from the church office) from November – please send one (or enclose it with your Christmas card) to people you know might like to come. November 2014 Page 5 If Jesus’s hearers were expecting a militaristic king who claims victory and hands out reward and punishment afterwards, they were wrong. Being victorious over sin and death, Jesus does not deal with friends and enemies in a military way. They win a share of the kingdom, not for valour, but for compassion and generosity. This is not what those who believed that there are no victories in feeding the poor expected, or wanted to hear.

This morning I was listening to ‘UCB Inspirational Mornings’, and was reminded 'What a Friend we have in Jesus' before I turned to God in a time of reading and prayer. What good news to be reminded of! We can pray to our God in Christ Jesus wherever we are - on our own or with others. If you are unable to attend church worship gatherings God can still hear your prayer - He has perfect hearing. If you attend the 11am service why not encourage the Prayer Team members on duty near the Welcome Desks with your answers to prayer or ask them to share your prayer wish-list? David Hill asks us to Try Praying - great idea indeed - so let's make this month one to try praying with one another - it really is good to hear how God is at work among us isn't it? 1 2 The people of Coventry will always remember the dreadfully long night of 14th November 1940. It was the longest air raid of the World War II and when the light dawned the 3 4 next morning, Coventry was in ruins. So many people were dead, injured or homeless; there wasn’t a person who had not suffered dur- ing that night. The medieval cathedral was a burnt 5 6 out shell. Two of the burnt roof beams were tied together to make a cross and this makeshift symbol was set up where the altar had 7 8 been. A cross was also made from the 14th century iron nails that had held the roof together and this Cross of Nails still remains today as a symbol of sympathy, forgiveness and reconciliation. A gooseberry with hiccups. Copies of the Cross of Nails have been The Tea Towl (ouch!) presented to

November 2014 Page 11 "GOODNESS ME - IS THAT THE TIME ALREADY ?" Our next Gathering for Praise is on Wednesday 29th October. The other day it dawned on me that exactly 5 years ago on that night I wandered into Liberton Kirk clutching my mandola, really very apprehensive and thinking I had no busi- ness being there. Jenni is a clever wife - not for her the nag nag "isn't it time to give the music group a chance, you know we need another instrumentalist, and John says he would like you along. I know you aren't interested in the church; but . . ." Instead, Jenni goes for the mustard seed. Drops the odd seed, smiles, wanders off. That went on for years. Why I woke up the day before, and announced I was going to do 2 things I'd never done before - go to the Gyle with her, and go to Gathering for Praise - is a mystery. So in I went, my Dad's words warning me to be very careful. "Until something happens to you to prove God exists, or something happens to prove he doesn't, best be an agnostic, son. " So in I agnostically went. Ten minutes later my ag- nosticism went up in a puff of smoke. A powerful brew of all the band gently smiling; already making me welcome in a kind, easy way; Ruth's simple prayer, which, you know made total sense; feeling very at ease in this church; a very peaceful place. Of course when the music started that was it. I was playing stuff I'd never ever heard of before, fingers just going in the right place. Before very long I knew without the slightest doubt I was in the right place with the right people, playing the right music, and jumping with emotions I'd never felt before. Oh how it all made perfect sense! Heavens, I'd met God for the first time! Thank you God. Doesn't this all tie in with our theme "How to be a welcoming church "? I've never felt so welcome in my life ! Never too late is it! After the Alpha course John said something very special "Thank you God for finding Bryan sitting under his tree". Thank you everyone, thank you John, thank you God. Love to you all, Bryan Ps – The Sunday morning music group are looking for a rhythm guitarist. If you know of anyone who is interested, could you point them in my direction, please!

Carol Anderson is one of our newest members here at Liberton, and this is her story . . . I have always returned to church when facing difficult situations, whether it be when I was diagnosed with cancer or when my son was given 24hours to live. I would always pray, and always had my own private conversations with Jesus, even when not attending church. I knew I had a faith but wasn't sure if it was Christian or Buddhist. I liked the idea of life being precious and have always felt that way myself, never hurting even a spider or a fly. But when Roy (my late husband) died I was distraught at the thought that he may not have asked for forgiveness for his sins. I moved back to Edinburgh as I needed the support of my family due to circumstances, and I also returned to Liberton Kirk, and prayed for my husband’s soul. I prayed that The Lord forgive him. I continued praying for two and a half years. Then I joined an Alpha course, which I totally loved, and got a better under- standing of the Bible and what Christianity was about. I had lots of questions, which I asked regularly and probably drove my fellow Christians at Alpha crazy, as well as John and Lindsay, but over the following months I became actively involved in the church. I was attending 3 services every Sunday as well as listen- ing online to sermons, and, although no theologian by any means, I was slowly gaining a better understanding of Jesus. I now read my bible at least daily and feel Jesus is actually with me and guiding me. I even find myself asking "would Jesus do that?", and if the answer is “no”, then neither do I. So I'm now actively changing my behaviour to try and be all Jesus wants me to be. God bless, Carol

Page 18 Liberton Kirk Magazine No.634 This year’s thanksgiving service for Christian Aid partners will take place in St George’s West Church at 6-30pm on Sunday 7th December. The service will be led by Kathy Galloway, Head of Christian Aid Scotland, and will celebrate what our partners round the world have achieved. This is a not ticked event, and no invitation is required. No collection will be taken, as the service is focused on celebrating the work of our partners, and on thanking you, our supporters, for your efforts that make our work possible. We will be delighted to see you at St George’s West. Val Brown, Church and Community Manager, Christian Aid Scotland 0131 220 1254.

Once a year we invite anybody who would like to sing to join our four-part choir for the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, which this year is at 7-30pm on Wednesday 17th December. Rehearsals take place on the six preceding Tuesdays, starting on Tuesday 11th November, from 7.30pm to 9pm. The first four rehearsals will be held in the Wilson Hall (upstairs in the Kirk Centre) and the last two in the church. If you would like to try singing in a choir, please come along on 11th November, and join in. Being able to read music is a help, but not essential, and nobody has to audition. If you can’t come on the 11th; but would like to join the choir the following week, please let me know. Ruth Davies, tel. 664 3608

Many of you will have heard of Purity Ndinda Mutua, the girl we support at The Alliance School in Kikuyu, Nairobi, Kenya. Purity's parents are simple farmers who cannot afford to pay for her education. For the past year, therefore, Liberton Kirk, has been privileged through its Mission Fund to sponsor her school fees and accommodation. She is making good progress, but she has two further years to complete, and your World Mission Team wants to make that possible with YOUR help. Many of the congregation already support our World Mission activities through our annual appeal for funds in June; but the costs of Purity's fees for her remain- ing two years are likely to exceed what we normally raise from our annual appeal. We have, therefore, decided to organise two fund raising concerts specifically to meet Purity's fees, and we hope you will support these events either by attending, or, if you cannot make it, then please consider making a special donation through the church collection, in an envelope marked "For Purity". Both concerts will highlight the work of local music groups and will be held in the Kirk. The first will be held on , when we will welcome the , who are promising an engaging programme of varied music. It will start at 7.30pm and will last just over one hour, followed by refreshments in the Kirk Centre. The second will be in a different mood, and will be part of our Christmas celebra- tions. On , we will welcome the for a special seasonal lunchtime concert followed by mulled wine and mince pies. We hope that whole families and friends will consider joining us for this short interlude away from the hectic activities of Christmas. It will last approximately from 12.30pm until 2pm. Entrance vouchers for both these concerts will be available after morning services for one month before each event, or you can apply to Mary Davidson on 0131 664 6789, or Sandy Hutchison on 01506 410 840. We are suggesting that those attending consider a donation of £8 per person. We are grateful too that both musical groups will be giving their services free of

Page 20 Liberton Kirk Magazine No.634 charge because the concerts are both fund raiding efforts. We are also grateful to the Kirk Hospitality Team who will be assisting with the refreshments. Please check your diaries for these two dates and, if your free, please join us for these special entertaining church family events and bring friends! Sandy Hutchison, World Mission Team
