The Rules of #MeToo Jessica A. Clarke† ABSTRACT Two revelations are central to the meaning of the #MeToo movement. First, sexual harassment and assault are ubiquitous. And second, traditional legal procedures have failed to redress these problems. In the absence of effective formal legal pro- cedures, a set of ad hoc processes have emerged for managing claims of sexual har- assment and assault against persons in high-level positions in business, media, and government. This Article sketches out the features of this informal process, in which journalists expose misconduct and employers, voters, audiences, consumers, or professional organizations are called upon to remove the accused from a position of power. Although this process exists largely in the shadow of the law, it has at- tracted criticisms in a legal register. President Trump tapped into a vein of popular backlash against the #MeToo movement in arguing that it is “a very scary time for young men in America” because “somebody could accuse you of something and you’re automatically guilty.” Yet this is not an apt characterization of #MeToo’s paradigm cases. -

Trump's New Face of Power in America
Trump’s New Face of Power in America (updated and revised June 2021) Bob Hanke1 York University, Toronto, Canada Abstract: This article proposes that the advent of Trumpism was an historical moment of danger that compels us to analyze the micropolitics of the present. In the first part, I describe the constellation that gave rise to Trumpism. In the second part, I recall Goffman’s concept of face-work and discuss how it remains relevant for describing Trump’s aggressive face-work. In the third part, I take Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of faciality as a point of departure for understanding micro- fascism. As an abstract machine, Trump’s faciality engendered and diffused fascisizing micropolitics around a messenger/disrupter in chief. It worked in connection with a landscape and relative to a collective assemblage of enunciation that extracted a territory of perception and affect. In the micropolitics of the present, the defining feature of Trumpism was how the corrupt abuse of power and the counterforces limiting his potency collided on an ominous, convulsive political reality TV show that threatened US democracy. Keywords: Trumpism, face-work, faciality, assemblage, micropolitics, impeachment, coronavirus pandemic We are all sufferers from history, but the paranoid is a double sufferer, since he is afflicted not only by the real world, with the rest of us, but by his fantasies as well. – Richard Hofstadter (1964) When a man unprincipled in private life desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper, possessed of considerable talents, -

GN Roger Stone Democracy's Undertaker Copy
Gaslit Nation Roger Stone Democracy’s Undertaker Andrea Chalupa Sarah Kendzior Theme Music Sarah Kendzior: I'm Sarah Kendzior. I'm a journalist and scholar of authoritarian states with a focus on the former Soviet Union. I'm also the author of the book The View From Flyover Country. I'm Andrea Chalupa, a writer, activist, and filmmaker and screenwriter of the upcoming journalistic thriller Mr. Jones. Sarah Kendzior: And this is Gaslit Nation, a podcast about corruption in the Trump Administration and rising authoritarianism around the world. This is the first time in a month that we've done an episode with an operational federal government. But while the shutdown may be over, the existential threat to the United States is not. We are merely in the eye of the hurricane. Since reopening the government last week, Trump has both threatened another shutdown and threatened a National Emergency — a scheduled National Emergency — that could happen on or by February 15th. Let's make one thing clear: contrary to cable news clamoring the shutdown is not about winners and losers, we all know who lost, and it was the American people. The media coverage that treats the shut down as Trump versus Pelosi is like watching a monster movie in which the human casualties are totally disregarded. They're just disposable background players in the battle between the beasts. This is not a movie and it's not a goddamn game. This is about our lives, about the lives of our fellow Americans. In my view, Nancy Pelosi did a great job holding the line and not giving into Trump's demands, but Trump did not cave or surrender he just slowed down. -

Among the many factors that have contributed to the rise of behavioral polarization betWeen Democrats and Republicans is the emergence of partisan media. In this thesis, I compare the coverage of American liberal and conservative media of two political #MeToo scandals in the autumn of 2017: those of Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Al Franken. I conduct a quantitative and qualitative frame analysis of online media articles by CNN, Fox News, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal from the first three days of each scandal. I find that liberal and conservative media differ in their coverage of the two events. First, they shoW differences in how they frame sexual harassment scandals. -

Fake News and the Dark Arts of Political Manipulation
By Leonard Wanyama By the time you read this, you would have already received your daily dose of fake news. The extended electioneering mode in which Kenya finds itself is fertile ground for what Samantha Bradshaw and Philip Howard from the University of Oxford have described as cyber troops, trolls and troublemakers, who are organised to manipulate all forms of media for political aims. You would have already encountered well-choreographed events, strangely engineered election petitions, shadowy non-profit organisations, dodgy lobby groups and all manner of consultants sprouting all over and pitching one alternative version of news against those of their opponents as they try to win you over. This is the environment in which political consultants tend to thrive in, as depicted in Get Me Roger Stone, a fascinating documentary about Roger J. Stone Jr., the political consultant who helped President Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in last year’s American election. Stone’s forte is in the use of opposition research and the promotion of falsehoods and conspiracy theories for the Republican Party’s electoral base. A veteran of the conservative movement, he is constantly referred to as a “dirty trickster” and the “prince of darkness” who is well versed in party infighting and raw politicking. Watching this movie during this era of fake news, it wouldn’t hurt to call Mr. Stone the “Godfather” of all foreign political consultancies currently strutting across the African continent, such as BTP Advisers, Cambridge Analytica, and Bell Pottinger. A self-styled agent provocateur, Stone’s life is framed within the context of how the Republican Party has transformed itself from the New Right of Ronald Reagan to the Alternative Right, or Alt-Right, of the Trump administration. -
Al-FAW PALACE Victory Base Complex, Baghdad, Iraq
Al-FAW PALACE Victory Base Complex, Baghdad, Iraq Al-Faw Presidential Palace • Al-Faw is one of 8 presidential palaces used for hunting and recreation by Baathist party members, Saddam Hussein and his family. Both sons, U’day and Qu’say had villas on the artificial lake. There were houseboats to move them around; often they would cruise the lake and take tea at one of the artificial islands. One of the houseboats can be seen, housed in a metal roofed boathouse near LZ Griffin. • The palace was built to commemorate the sacrifices made by the Iraqi Army during the Iran-Iraq War in regaining the Al-Faw peninsula, located in southern Iraq. In February 1986 the Iranian Army successfully launched a 30,000 man amphibious style attack across the Shatt Al-Arab river that captured the area as part of a plan to cut Iraqi oil export. Hussein vowed to retake the Al-Faw peninsula at all costs. It would take the Iraqi Army two years to recapture the lost ground. Mustard gas and other chemical weapons were targeted at approximately 8,000 to 10,000 Iranian troops during this period. Thousands of Iraqi soldiers would die in the Al-Faw Peninsular campaign – a true war for oil. • Visitors walking into the palace are greeted with the words “Peace be to the fighters of the Al-Faw Peninsula.” • The palace is surrounded by a lake and villa complex. The lakes are filled with fish and carp. The rumors that the lake contained bodies of victims of Hussein have not been proven – nor has the lake been drained to find out.
