Trump's New Face of Power in America
Trump’s New Face of Power in America (updated and revised June 2021) Bob Hanke1 York University, Toronto, Canada Abstract: This article proposes that the advent of Trumpism was an historical moment of danger that compels us to analyze the micropolitics of the present. In the first part, I describe the constellation that gave rise to Trumpism. In the second part, I recall Goffman’s concept of face-work and discuss how it remains relevant for describing Trump’s aggressive face-work. In the third part, I take Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of faciality as a point of departure for understanding micro- fascism. As an abstract machine, Trump’s faciality engendered and diffused fascisizing micropolitics around a messenger/disrupter in chief. It worked in connection with a landscape and relative to a collective assemblage of enunciation that extracted a territory of perception and affect. In the micropolitics of the present, the defining feature of Trumpism was how the corrupt abuse of power and the counterforces limiting his potency collided on an ominous, convulsive political reality TV show that threatened US democracy. Keywords: Trumpism, face-work, faciality, assemblage, micropolitics, impeachment, coronavirus pandemic We are all sufferers from history, but the paranoid is a double sufferer, since he is afflicted not only by the real world, with the rest of us, but by his fantasies as well. – Richard Hofstadter (1964) When a man unprincipled in private life desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper, possessed of considerable talents, -

Fake News and the Dark Arts of Political Manipulation
By Leonard Wanyama By the time you read this, you would have already received your daily dose of fake news. The extended electioneering mode in which Kenya finds itself is fertile ground for what Samantha Bradshaw and Philip Howard from the University of Oxford have described as cyber troops, trolls and troublemakers, who are organised to manipulate all forms of media for political aims. You would have already encountered well-choreographed events, strangely engineered election petitions, shadowy non-profit organisations, dodgy lobby groups and all manner of consultants sprouting all over and pitching one alternative version of news against those of their opponents as they try to win you over. This is the environment in which political consultants tend to thrive in, as depicted in Get Me Roger Stone, a fascinating documentary about Roger J. Stone Jr., the political consultant who helped President Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in last year’s American election. Stone’s forte is in the use of opposition research and the promotion of falsehoods and conspiracy theories for the Republican Party’s electoral base. A veteran of the conservative movement, he is constantly referred to as a “dirty trickster” and the “prince of darkness” who is well versed in party infighting and raw politicking. Watching this movie during this era of fake news, it wouldn’t hurt to call Mr. Stone the “Godfather” of all foreign political consultancies currently strutting across the African continent, such as BTP Advisers, Cambridge Analytica, and Bell Pottinger. A self-styled agent provocateur, Stone’s life is framed within the context of how the Republican Party has transformed itself from the New Right of Ronald Reagan to the Alternative Right, or Alt-Right, of the Trump administration. -

The American Tattoo
Jackson Dockery Date: 1/15/20 The American Tattoo Tattoos leave a mark – for better or worse. Sometimes they turn out stylish and have a heart-warming meaning that reaffirm what you believe and feel as a person. Sometimes they turn out messy and confusing, permanently inking a part of your body that you can’t avoid and is now part of your everyday frustrations. Sometimes it’s the word “MOM.” Sometimes it’s a Japanese phrase that translates to some variation of “don’t be a jerk”. Sometimes it’s like a weird bird feather. Sometimes it’s Richard Nixon’s face. And according to the Netflix documentary Get Me Roger Stone, if your name’s America, your permanent mark is the existence of the man, the myth, the dark legend: Roger Stone. 1 “It is better to be infamous than to have never been famous at all” – and so begin Roger Stone’s rules, and ultimately the film’s rules, on how to become an active success in propaganda (Stone). The film follows the life, career, beliefs, and method through which Roger Stone affected the American public and the American political system over the past 40 plus yeas through an upending of basic political norms, attitudes and morality. To Stone, it doesn’t matter whether you’re the good guy or the bad guy to someone. If you’re “the guy,” you are by definition having an effect on someone. The very first line of the film is one delivered by then presidential nominee Donald Trump at the 2016 Republican National Convention and sums up the main focus of Stone’s style of political communication. -
Episode 9: Winning Producer: Previously on the Asset Max
Episode 9: Winning Producer: Previously on The Asset Max Bergmann: The Republican convention had concluded the day before and it had been a mess. Ted Cruz: And God bless the United States of America. Max Bergmann: Polling after the convention showed that Trump failed to get any bounce out of it. Then, the next morning, the website WikiLeaks released a massive trove of 20,000 emails and documents from the Democratic National Committee, from the Democratic Party. Newscast: That sent a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters into the streets here in Philadelphia over the weekend. We saw significant protests here in Philadelphia. Max Bergmann: Six days after the WikiLeaks release of DNC emails, the Trump campaign wanted more, and Donald Trump held a press conference. In it he made this startling statement: Donald Trump: Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. Max Bergmann: And it turns out, they were listening. Max Bergmann: Episode Nine: Winning. Early on Tuesday morning, October 11, 2016, WikiLeaks released its third batch of emails stolen by the Russians from Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta. It came four days after the initial release from WikiLeaks on Friday, October 7. This 8:30 AM release contained nearly 1,200 emails, and it came on top of the 4,000 that had been made public in the first two releases. That's a lot of emails to go through in four days, and by mid-day on October 11, one particular email exchange had been featured in the first two stories published on this batch: one on the US-based conservative website, the Daily Caller. -
