We Saw You at... The Variety Show From Rabbi Marc Berkson In a recent column in The New York Times, Tom Friedman urged our president to explain rather than to inflame the debates about the border wall and immigration. Friedman suggest- ed the president should begin as follows:

So I cannot help but ask myself, as a citi- zen of the world, as an American, and as a Jew, what are my responsibilities? 70 million people, refugees, who, by defini- tion, are not safe at home. And I raise these questions at a unique time in Jewish history. For just 75 years after the Holocaust, just decades after the flight of Jews from the Mediterranean lands, just three decades after the exoduses from the former Soviet Union and from Ethiopia, Jews are truly no longer Mitch S. Rather, Christian and Muslim lives are endan- gered throughout the Middle East and Africa and far East - Copts and Maronites and the Assyrians, Yazidis and Rohingya, so many from Syria and Iraq and Afghanistan and Burma. And so many fleeing from those failing countries to the south of us – from Guatemala to El Salvador to Venezuela. They are now the world’s refugees. What is our responsibility?
