ASP was one among the recipients of the 2016 Diversity Award within the Education category. The UAC- SWPA African Diversity Awards were the first of their kind to recognize people, business, organiza- tions and institutions that have excelled in promoting equality and diversity across the region. Meghan Schneck is a junior at Pitt majoring in Emergency Medicine in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences. Meghan was an intern in the Fall semester. Katherine Mooney was the intern for the Spring semester. Onyinyechi ‘Gandhi’ Chukwunyere Graduate Fellow Originally from Kitale—an agricultural town in the northern rift valley of Kenya, Stephen Juma spent the academic year at the University of Pittsburgh, serving as a FLTA for African Studies and a Heinz Fellow for the Global Studies Center. Stephen received his Bachelor’s degree in Education with a major in Linguistics from Masinde Muliro University in Kenya, and is a high school teacher in his home country.

A host of questions arise when we consider hip-hopʼs global scope and significance: What does the genre in its various forms (audio, video, sartorial, gestural) carry beyond the US? What do people bring to it in new local contexts? How are US notions of race and nation mediated by hip-hop's global reach? Why do some global (which is to say, local) hip-hop scenes fasten onto the genre's well-rehearsed focus on place, community, and righteous opposition to structural and representational forms of violence, while others appear more enamored with slick portrayals of hustler archetypes, cool machismo, and ruggedly individualist, conspicuous consumption? How can hip-hop circulate in such contradictory forms? In what ways do hip-hop scenes differ from North to South America, West to East Africa, Europe to Asia? What threads unite them? In pursuit of such questions, we will read across the emerging literature on global hip- hop as we explore the growing resources available via the internet, where websites and blogs, MySpace and YouTube and the like have facilitated a further efflorescence of international (and peer-to-peer) exchanges around hip-hop.

It is these insightful voices that this article unveils. Phenomenological research design was employed. Three research sites were targeted comprising two chiefdoms and covering four villages, two villages from each chief dom. Data was collected using interviews and focus group discussions. After coding the data, narrative and thematic methods of data analysis were used. Findings reveal that the value of adult education is measured informally by the number of the adult population able to access social amenities equitably and equally on one hand, and on the other, by their ability to read the „word and the world‟ as purported by Freire and Macedo (1987). Given such a scenario, Africa is gaining increased attention due to the innumerable challenges it faces in striving to achieve sustainable development. There is unanimity that African countries should improve their capacities to cope with emerging challenges. As a result, their higher education institutions need to drastically improve their own educational programmes and associated research facilities for training future generations of skilled personnel. This paper concludes by making critical observations on the general populace’s expectations of private higher education learning institutions. It employs the locally produced Yizo Yizo as a case study to explore the intertextual relationship between music and television. Yizo Yizo, a reality-based drama series, was groundbreaking in propelling the experiences of black youth onto the national agenda. In representing what can be described as ‘authentic township experiences’, the series utilizes kwaito, and to a lesser degree, hip-hop, as signifiers of township and ‘essentially’ black youth experiences. Soundtracks to the series utilize both genres and local kwaito and hip-hop artists feature as themselves. The paper adopts a discursive approach to exploring intertextuality and the ways in which meanings embedded in a television series are related to music and other secondary texts and vice versa.
