THE VIOLENCE! Project co-ordinator: Associazione SPAZIO DONNA SUMMARY REPORT Introduction/aims of project The "W.I.N. THE VIOLENCE" proposal has been focused on a serious and degrading violation of human dignity: domestic violence against women, teenagers and children taking into account its different aspects and manifestation. The phenomenon has alarming dimension, particularly in less developed EU regions. An Italian local survey (Province of Caserta-1997) showed that violence in the familiar context is the most relevant crime against women (22.63%) after sexual abuse and trafficking for sexual exploitation purpose. Furthermore, domestic violence is linked with cultural, social, economic and behavior factors that normally block the emerging of the phenomenon and therefore require more meaningful activities addressed at European level. For these reasons the Italian Association SPAZIO DONNA in transnational partnership with Fundaciò ZONA FRANCA (ES) and EMSI (FR) conceived and implemented the project W.I.N. THE VIOLENCE! aimed to facilitate the exchange and dissemination of information, know-how and best practices related to the fight against the violence in a familiar context (involving children, teenagers and women) through the phenomenon analysis. The project implementation was finalised to the following objectives: - screening of domestic violence against women, young people and children in the three area partner of the project (Caserta-IT, Barcelona – ES, Ajaccio-FR); - planning and development of a software for data collection; - exchange and diffusion of information, know-how and best practices related to the prevention and fight against domestic violence; - development of new methodologies and strategies to promote awareness of the importance of the phenomenon to prevent domestic violence episodes (i.e. W.I.N. the violence Help Desk, videotape, etc.) 5 ASSOCIAZIONE SPAZIO DONNA c/o STUDIO LEGALE ASSOCIATO BARBIERI C.SO TRIESTE, 273 I-81100 CASERTA TEL/FAX:+39.0823.354834 e-mail:[email protected] Proposal reference number: 98/265/WC Proposal acronym: W.I.N. THE VIOLENCE! Project co-ordinator: Associazione SPAZIO DONNA Methodology/activities The implementation of project activities run from 1st February 19991 to 1st February 2000 in accordance with the original proposal although with a different timetable reviewed by all partners2. The activities were split into four different phases following a precise timetable: I Phase (01.02.99-03.10.99) - Exchange of information between the partners – agreement on the timetable - Start-up of local network “W.I.N. THE VIOLENCE!” - Design of the screening on the domestic violence phenomenon - Definition of partner tasks - Agreement on the questionnaire to use for the screening - Collection of domestic violence data - Development of the software for data entry - Best practices research - Start-up of the “W.I.N. THE VIOLENCE!” Help Desk - 1ST TRANSNATIONAL MEETING (Caserta) II Phase (04.10.99-05.12.99) - Domestic violence data entry - Analysis and elaboration of data - Exchange of best practices and definition of guidelines for a videotape - Exchange of information to elaborate a quality standard for services to support women, young people and children victims of domestic violence - Definition of new methodologies and strategies to prevent or fight against domestic violence III Phase (06.12.99-10.01.2000) 1 The starting date was postponed due to delay in receiving the contract from Commission 2 The partnership agreed in postponing the first meeting after sixth month of work to check project results and verify the achievement of overall objectives. 6 ASSOCIAZIONE SPAZIO DONNA c/o STUDIO LEGALE ASSOCIATO BARBIERI C.SO TRIESTE, 273 I-81100 CASERTA TEL/FAX:+39.0823.354834 e-mail:[email protected] Proposal reference number: 98/265/WC Proposal acronym: W.I.N. ZONA FRANCA was involved in the screening phase, research of best practices and development of innovative methodologies to fight against domestic violence. 3 EMSI substituted ID FORMATION, original French partner of the WIN THE VIOLENCE proposal. 7 ASSOCIAZIONE SPAZIO DONNA c/o STUDIO LEGALE ASSOCIATO BARBIERI C.SO TRIESTE, 273 I-81100 CASERTA TEL/FAX:+39.0823.354834 e-mail:[email protected] Proposal reference number: 98/265/WC Proposal acronym: W.I.N. THE VIOLENCE! Project co-ordinator: Associazione SPAZIO DONNA The partners participated actively to each phase of the project and to the scheduled meetings supporting also the evaluation team for the ongoing evaluation. Project activities started with the analysis of domestic violence phenomenon in the three area partner of the project (Caserta-IT, Barcelona-ES, Ajaccio-FR). After examining the provisional data of each country, the transnational partnership agreed on a pilot statistical research in the Province of Caserta -which demonstrated the highest rate of domestic violence cases- offering an overview of the phenomenon still hidden and linked to different factors (cultural, economic, social, etc.). The research was carried out on the basis of a questionnaire4 distributed to family doctors (66), police (300) and teachers(134) and helped to develop a reintegration strategy to help victims to re-insert into the social life. In particular, taking into account the answers to the questionnaire, the partners identified the "refugees houses"(specialised centres in hosting victims and people at risk) as first instrument for reintegration of victims managed by a team of qualified experts (i.e.

The story of a simple man who made his historic Di Fara pizzeria into a legend. If you enter the heart of Brooklyn from the Avenue J subway station, you’ll find yourself in a classic Jewish neighborhood, with synagogues and kosher restaurants. It’s the last place you would ever think of finding a typical Italian pizzeria. However, New York is a city of infinite surprises, of contrasts but also of cultural synthesis. And just a few steps away from the Avenue J subway station stop, you’ll find one of the city’s most venerable pizzerias, Di Fara Pizza, a place that has become legendary and in recent years an important destination for tourists and celebrities from all over the world. The secret of this little storefront lies in the golden hands of Domenico DeMarco, a pizza maker from Caiazzo [2], in the province of Caserta, who, since opening the pizzeria in 1964, has been preparing Page 1 of 3 The Legend of 'Di Fara Pizza' - A Classic Italian Story Published on iItaly.org (http://www.iitaly.org) his classic pizzas daily. Domenico’s Story His story is also a classic one. In 1959, Domenico left Caiazzo and followed his father, an American citizen, to the dream metropolis of New York.

Nitrate concentration in groundwater has frequently been linked to non-point pollution. At the same time the existence of intensive agriculture and extremely intensive livestock activity increases the potential for nitrate pollution in shallow groundwater. Nitrate used in agriculture could cause adverse effects on human and animal health. In order to evaluate the groundwater nitrate pollution, and how it might evolve in time, it is essential to develop control sys- tems and to improve policies and incentives aimed at controlling the amount of nitrate entering downstream water sys- tems. The province of Caserta in southern Italy is characterized by high levels of animal manure loading. A compari- son between manure nitrogen production and nitrate concentration in groundwater was carried out in this area, using geostatistical tools and spatial statistics. The results show a discrepancy between modelling of nitrate leaching and mon- itoring of the groundwater and, moreover, no spatial correlation between nitrogen production in livestock farms and nitrate concentration in groundwater, suggesting that producers are not following the regulatory procedures for the agronomic use of manure. The methodology developed in this paper could be applied also in other regions in which European Union fertilization plans are not adequately followed.

Initiatives on Mafia Confiscated Assets Summary of Funded Projects Initiatives on Mafia Confiscated Assets PROJECT NAME: Agri-Cultura Solidale PLACE: Teano (Ce) CONTRIBUTION: € 475.000,00 DURATION: 36 months DESCRIPTION: The project was launched on a mafia confiscated property in Teano, a small town on the outskirts of the province of Caserta, which has its own socio-economic agricultural system. Because of the limited ability to adapt to modern systems of labour, Teano experienced a slower economic development and in this way made it possibility for organised crime to impose its control. The asset was confiscated from the Magliulo clan of Afragola, in Naples who took control over the entire sidicino territory, relying on the good relationship with the Casalesi and the Esposito clan from Sessa Aurunca. The confiscated asset, through the commitment of the social cooperative Osiride and the N.C.O. Consortium, became a symbol of legality and reference point for all the young people of the territory that today, see in the confiscated property a job opportunity and social change. The asset is located on a 25 hectares of cultivable land with a building in need of renovation as it has been vandalised numerous times (the irrigation system was destroyed and the olive groves and apple orchards were set on fire). The Project “Agri Cultura”, financed by Fondazione Con il Sud, has a goal to create a socio-economic activity in partnership with vulnerable people, boost olive growing and other agriculture activities and open an olive mill. The pivot of the initiative is job placement of about 13 people affected by chronic diseases and\or degenerative psycho-social disabilities.

  • The Waste Crisis in Campania, Italy
The Waste Crisis in Campania, Italy By Lucie Greyl, Sara Vegni, Maddalena Natalicchio, Salima Cure and Jessica Ferretti for A Sud ABSTRACT From 1994 to early 2008, the region of Campania in south-west Italy existed under a formal State of Emergency, declared due to the saturation of regional waste treatment facilities. There is growing evidence, including a World Health Organisation (WHO) study of the region, that the accumulation of waste, illegal and legal, urban and industrial, has contaminated soil, water, and the air with a range of toxic pollutants including dioxins. A high correlation between incidences of cancer, respiratory illnesses, and genetic malformations and the presence of industrial and toxic waste landfills was also found. The Government has been unable to resolve this crisis, adopting measures that have only increased public unrest, exacerbating the conflict. Local communities continue to organise and protest, risking arrest in order to be heard by a Government that has so far excluded them from decision- making processes. Meanwhile the management of waste has worsened: from the failure to separate dry from wet waste and the resultant inability to produce compost (necessary for the regeneration of contaminated land) to the continued production of the inaccurately named “ecoballs” that have continued to accumulate due to delays in the construction of incinerators. These delays have necessitated the creation of new stocking areas, the re-opening of old landfills and the creation of new ones. Although Illegal waste management is currently one of the most urgent environmental issues in Italy, public opinion and the media remain silent on the matter.
