MIHAELA FRUNZĂ “THE SHARPEST LIVES”: HOW PHILOSOPHICAL IDEAS AND ALTERNATIVE MUSIC CAN CHANGE THE WORLD Mihaela FruNză Babes-Bolyai University, Department of Philosophy, Cluj, Romania Email: [email protected] Abstract: In this article I argue that alternative music can change the world when it migrates from the realm of music to that of ideas. I take the example of My Chemical Romance, and I break down the claim that it changed the world of their fans firstly through a “change of language”, by using the structuralist tool of intertextuality, and secondly through a “change of hearts”, by building on the cathartic usage of emotions, both for themselves and their fanbase. I also explore the dangers intricate in the process, and I discuss a sample of accusations they were subjected to from the media. The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys by Dylan Roseburrough “You’ll never destroy punk! It’s too fabulous!” screamed Victor Fuentes, whom we shall call Vic just because of sheer laziness on the part of our illustrious writer. “Silly boy,” purred Dr. Death (ultimate evil and stupid genius), “I shall do whatever I want to with my precious time, no matter how you interject. Project S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W will succeed and there’s nothing you can do about it.” * * * Now that we’re past our most intriguing introduction to our characters, I, Gerard Way, shall begin at the beginning of the fascinating tale describing how the Fabulous Killjoys and I saved our colleague and reached salvation in joining The Black Parade. First, I should probably tell you who the Killjoys are. They are the legendary punk icons Pete Wentz, Alan Ashby, Andy Biersack, Vic Fuentes, (who we met earlier and upon this meeting were graced with hearing his beautiful, heartfelt screaming, with which none to date have been able to compare), and I, the Fabulous Gerard Way!
