It is a continuation of earlier work of Dr. James East Irby, "La Influencia de William Faulkner en Cuatro Narradores Hispano- americanos," published in 1956. v CHAPTER I THE NOVEL AND CIRCUMSTANCES OF INVOLVEMENT For the literary scholar whose field of interest is in the novel, the richness and diversity of the Latin Ameri­ can novel is particularly appealing. Because of the many differences in culture, geography, ethnic backgrounds, po­ litical systems, etc., Latin America offers a continuous flow of ideas, beliefs, philosophies and concepts in its fiction. The novel has been one of the mediums through which that flow has been most effectively transmitted. Kessel Schwartz has been one of the critics to call attention to the fact that "from about 19 35 on one may speak of a new novel.He states that whereas the older themes involving social problems, regionalism, political corrup­ tion, etc., continue to exist, it is the works which deal with the "mythological, allegorical, introspective, surreal­ istic, and existentialist aspects of life, employing . techniques such as interior monologue . dream sequences , 2 flashbacks, objectivism, . ." which began to cause excite­ ment in the 1950's and 1960's. ■^Kessel Schwartz, A New History of Spanish American Fiction (Coral Gables, Fla.: University of Miami Press, 1971), II, 95. ^Ibid., p . 96. 1 2 Gomez-Gil has been another historian to call atten­ tion to the fact that the political, economic and social changes of the twentieth century have resulted in a mental, moral, and cultural crisis for "man" himself. And that this crisis has caused "man" to search within himself for the universalities of life's meaning and his own existence. To achieve these new objectives he has had to introduce new techniques, some of which are reflected in new methods of fiction. These new methods of fiction have been found in the works of James Joyce, interior monologue; Aldous Huxley, 3 counterpoint; Franz Kafka, intricately woven plots; etc. In the examination of the works of other literary his­ torians, this writer came upon mention of, at times, Vir- 4 . ginia Woolf, John Dos Passos, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner.^

Weaver, to the crisis of modernity. In looking at some of the changes brought about in the society as well as problems created, these two Southern sons respond to the same and offer some solutions through Platonic ideas or concepts of the metaphysical as is shown in their narrative and philosophical work. Two of the early works of Faulkner, The Unvanquished and Sanctuary, as well as three of the essays of Weaver, "The Phaedrus and the Nature of Rhetoric," "To Write the Truth," and "The Power of the Word," are considered. Weaver offers a powerful critique of modernity and the problems associated with it. Faulkner's offering is less direct, as his is through the creative response of narrative. The first chapter is a theoretical discussion that defines the representations of the inspired creator and analyzes their influence in a corpus of novels that share an essential characteristic: the protagonist is a poet. In order to historically reconstruct the evolution of the Romantic representations of the poet, the body of texts opens with De sobremesa by the Colombian Jose Asunción Silva (written in 1892 but published in 1925), and closes with La rueda de Chicago (2004) by the Colombian novelist Armando Romero. Using Wolfang Iser’s concept of representation and the cultural imagination, this dissertation analyses nine novels in which one can observe the deconstruction or recuperation of the poet as a Romantic figure.

    RSA Journal 12 61 GRAZIELLA FANTINI Faulkner's War Birds / A Ghost Story: a Screenplay and its Relationship with Faulkner's Fiction This brief essay is an excerpt from a project1 which analyzes the relations between Faulkner's film work and his fiction, where I have emphasized a number of connections that point out the great importance of Faulkner's "second" career. These connections challenge many critics who consider Faulkner's production in Hollywood simply a business. It is clear that Faulkner worked differently in writing fiction and in writing for the studios, and that he was aware that motion pictures were not his own medium,2 but he took his work seriously, nonetheless. The analysis of Faulkner's screenplay War Birds / A Ghost Story emphasizes his great ability in dealing with important themes also in his "secondary" Hollywood works — themes such as peace and war, death and life, love and hate, suffering, the burden of the past, tradition, the family, and others. The script is set partly in Jefferson; its protagonists are John and Bayard Sartoris, taken from Flags in the Dust and several of his World War I stories; the work thus must be seen as part of the Yoknapatawpha myth. It offers us an example of how Faulkner extended and clarified themes of his major fiction in his screcnwriting. War Birds / A Ghost Story was Faulkner's second full-length film script written for Howard Hawks during his first period in Hollywood, when he worked at the MGM. According to Bruce Kawin,3 the screenplay was written "between late November 1932 and early January 1933" (257).
