Wagner. 1928, the second is allocated to Byrhiospeum Bourguignal. 1882. The crenobiontic Belgrandiella species is charactedzed by one autapomorphic character statt: of the genital system and by a umque combinalion of states wbich are sbared with other species. The second species, a stygobiont. is tentatively auributed to Bychiospeum, because its descriplion is based only on shell charactcrs. 8oth species are known from very restricted ranges correspond ing to lhe distributional pattem of their congcncrs. In addition. data of 13 abiolic parameters measured over a pedod of more than 5 years in lhe spdngs where the new species were found are prescnted. Thc valucs of these parameters are characteristic for naiUral. carbonate brooks. Con tanlination witb fecal bacteria suggests influence through agriculture or may be caused by feces of mammals. Chemically, agriculture and forestry appear to have no significant impact on the springs investigated. INTRODUCTION Giusti & Bodon (1984: 169) described Alzoniella for three eyeless, subterranean, hy- drobiid species from Italy, that might have evolved from small populations that locally survived the Quaternary glaciations. It turned out that Alzoniella is also represented in where mountain inhabited France, regions are that have partially been subject to gla- ciations, viz. the Pyrenees and the MediterraneanAlps. In these regions too, populations ofancestral have Alzoniella might survived locally by invading subterranean waters. This development apparently went less far than in for example Bythiospeum Bourguignat, 1882, andMoitessieria Bourguignat, 1863. Species of these two genera, which are eyeless stygobionts, occur not only in karstic waters, but also in the interstitium and in subter- ranean waters bordering river valleys such as that of the Rhone river (Boeters & Miiller be found 1992).

Andrzej Falniowski* Department of Malacology, Institute of Zoology and Biomedical Research, Jagiellonian University, Poland Abstract Hydrobioids, known earlier as the family Hydrobiidae, represent a set of truncatelloidean families whose members are minute, world- wide distributed snails inhabiting mostly springs and interstitial wa- ters. More than 1,000 nominal species bear simple plesiomorphic shells, whose variability is high and overlapping between the taxa, and the soft part morphology and anatomy of the group is simplified because of miniaturization, and unified, as a result of necessary ad- aptations to the life in freshwater habitats (osmoregulation, internal fertilization and eggs rich in yolk and within the capsules). The ad- aptations arose parallel, thus represent homoplasies. All the above facts make it necessary to use molecular markers in species dis- crimination, although this should be done carefully, considering ge- netic distances calibrated at low taxonomic level. Most valvatiform genera of the gastropod family Hydrobiidae are narrow-range taxa. One exception is the genus Arganiella, which is comprised of three congeners: the type species A. pescei from the Apennine Peninsula, A. wolfi from the Iberian Peninsula and A. tabanensis from the Balkans. The genus assignment of the latter two species was based on morphological similarities with A. pescei in the shell, operculum, radula and genitalia. Given that the morphology of hydrobiids is sometimes susceptible to convergence, this study re-evaluates the taxonomic status of species of Arganiella by analysing mitochondrial (mtCOI) and nuclear (18S rRNA) sequences of topotypes or near topotypes to infer their phylogenetic position.

Molecular studies on their relationships confirmed the distinctness of this family. Their monophyly, however, remained doubtful, since the Moitessieriidae did not form a distinct clade in the phylogenetic tree based on the most commonly applied mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), and the representative of the family Cochliopidae occupied a position among the moitessieriid clades. In the present paper two new nuclear loci, namely histone H3 gene and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer ITS2, have been applied to resolve the status of the Moitessieriidae.

A few minute Belgrandiella-like gastropods were found in three springs in Georgia. Molecular markers: mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and nuclear histone (H3) were used to infer their phylogenetic relationships. The phylogenetic trees placed them most closely to Agrafia from continental Greece. The p-distances indicated that two species occurred in the three localities. Two specimens from Andros Island (Greece) were also assigned to the genus Agrafia. The p-distances between the four taxa, most probably each representing a distinct species, were within the range of 0.026–0.043 for H3, and 0.089–0.118 for COI. KEY WORDS: spring snail, DNA, Georgia, Andros, phylogeny INTRODUCTION The freshwater gastropods of Georgia, as well as Graziana Radoman, 1975, Pontobelgrandiella Radoman, those of all the Caucasus, are still poorly studied; this 1973, and Alzoniella Giusti et Bodon, 1984. They are concerns especially the minute representatives of the morphologically distinguishable but only slightly Truncatelloidea. About ten species inhabiting karst different, and molecularly represent not closely re- springs and caves have been found so far (SHADIN lated lineages.

New investigations of freshwater habitats in mountainous regions and caves revealed six new species of the Rissooidea in Bulgaria. The new species are described here and photos of the holotypes are provided. In addition we added photos of the type localities. An identification key of the genera of the Rissooidea of Bulgaria gives an overview of the diversity of this group. The following species are described as new: Strandzhia bythinellopenia sp. n., gen. n., Grossuana slavyanica n. sp., G. derventica n. sp., Radomaniola strandzhica n. sp., Bythiospeum devetakium n. sp., Bythinella rilaensis n. sp.
