Jesus’ taking on flesh and dwelling among us is the greatest way that God could reveal himself to the world. What better way than for God to become one of us, so that living among us, we might better know Him, our one true God! This Sunday, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ; or as it is known in Latin, Corpus Christi. Through this special feast, the Church recognizes, in a very solemn way, the Real Presence of Jesus in the bread and wine of the Eucharist. Pope Urban IV, in 1264, instituted the Solemnity of Corpus Christi to be observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday as a feast for the entire Roman Catholic Church. While the institution of the Eucharist is celebrated on Holy Thursday, the liturgy of Holy Thursday also commemorates Christ's washing of the disciples' feet, the institution of the priesthood, and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. So many other events take place on Holy Thursday that detract our attention on the the institution of the Eucharist. For this reason, the Feast of Corpus Christi was established to create a feast focused solely on the Holy Eucharist. It was also to be celebrated on Thursday in keeping with the Thursday observance of the Last Supper. Corpus Christi was also observed as one of the ten original Holy Days of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church. Although they are still solemnly celebrated, most of the original Holy Days no longer carry the obligation to attend mass. Also, Corpus Christi, as the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, are now celebrated on Sunday. In some countries, such as Poland, Corpus Christi is still traditionally observed on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday. It is also recognized as a national holiday. During my seminary days in Poland, I was privileged to partake in some pretty spectacular celebrations of Corpus Christi. In the city of Poznan, where our seminary was located, Corpus Christi would begin at the cathedral. Then, with thousands of people in attendance, the Eucharistic procession moved through the city streets stopping at four altars along the route and continued until it reached the city square. At each of the altars the Gospel passages pertaining to the Eucharist, as is written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John respectively, are proclaimed. The procession concludes with a solemn benediction. Doors and windows of residences and businesses were decorated along the path. The celebration culminated with an outdoor Mass in the city square. The purpose of Corpus Christi is to celebrate our faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. The Roman Catholic Church has held this belief of Jesus’ Real Presence in the Eucharist from the beginning. Today, most Christian churches do not hold that belief as we do. Many believe the bread and wine are simply symbols that remind us of Jesus. Corpus Christi is our opportunity to uphold our belief that the Eucharist is the real Body and Blood of Christ, and to honor Christ’s presence among us in the Eucharist. On Friday, June 19, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our parish will join in the international Rosary Relay on this day. The rosary will be prayed for 24 hours for the sanctification of priests as it is passed on to the various par- ticipating churches throughout the world. At 9:30am it will be our time to keep the prayer going. We will receive the rosary from Christ the King Cathedral in Botswana, South Africa, and then we will pass it on to the Sisters of Divine Grace in Boise, Idaho. Please join us!
