Remembering that we were closed last year, it was a joy to be able to celebrate Easter this year with people in attendance at mass. Even though we still had to limit the number of people in the church, we still had a respectable amount of people present. The liturgies of Holy Week and the Easter Triduum are beautiful and meaningful, but they do require a lot of preparation and coordination. A lot goes on behind the scenes. From decorating the church, to preparing liturgies, to coordinating the various ministers, to preparing the music; all is necessary to assure that the liturgies run smoothly and are meaningful. Thank goodness that we have dedicated people on our staff and volunteers, ready to pitch in, participate and help. For all of their time and help I am sincerely grateful. Fr. Julian and I would like to thank everyone for remembering us at Easter time with your good wishes, cards, gifts and food items. We are truly grateful for your generosity, and we thank you for taking the time to think about us. May God bless you for your goodness. This Second Sunday of Easter is also known as Divine Mercy Sunday. It was established as such by Jesus himself through a lowly and humble Polish nun, St. Sister Faustina Kowalska, a little less than a century ago. Through a series of Divine revelations, Sister Faustina, who was the first canonized saint of the new millennium by St. Pope John Paul II, was given the message to tell the world about the message of God’s Mercy… Divine Mercy… which flows from God’s incredible and powerful love for us. No one who ever approaches our merciful God will ever be rejected. The key is to have faith and to trust. “Jesus, I trust in You” are the words inscribed beneath the image of Jesus, who has His arm held out in blessing and whose heart emits the red and white rays. You can never go wrong in trusting Him. Have faith, believe, and trust in Him! Mercy is an incredible gift. In the Gospel this Sunday, the risen Lord Jesus appears to his Apostles, who abandoned him when He was arrested, and He offers them peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Jesus also imparts on them the authority to extend forgiveness to all his people. This was the institution of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. At 3:00pm, the “hour of mercy”, we will have a special devotion to celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. This week, on Wednesday, April 14, the Filipino community of Our Lady of Las Vegas Parish will commemorate two notable events: The Ninth Anniversary of the Canonization of San Pedro Colungsod, and the 500th Anniversary of the Introduction of Christianity to the Philippines. These two events will be celebrated with a special mass at 6:00pm. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 restrictions still in place, there is a limit to the number of people who may attend, and reservations for attendance at this mass must be made through our parish website, www.ollvchurch.org. As 2021 announces this 500-year anniversary, the people of the Philippines recognize and celebrate the profound gift their Catholic faith truly is. This anniversary is being solemnly and festively observed throughout the Philippines and in Filipino communities throughout the world. Pope Francis celebrated a special mass on March 14 at St. Peter’s Basilica to honor this historic occasion. There is a monument to the heroic voyage of Portugal’s Ferdinand Magellan, the first to circumnavigate the globe, and introduce Christianity to the islands. Christianity has done much to shape the Filipino culture and to allow the development of faith in the heart of every Filipino person. San Pedro Calungsod is the second canonized saint from the Philippines. Born in the Philippines in 1654, he worked as a sacristan and missionary catechist who, along with the Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores, suffered religious persecution and martyrdom in Guam for their missionary work in 1672. San Pedro was canonized at St. Peter’s Basilica on October 21 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI. A statue of San Pedro Calungsod, which was consecrated by the Holy Father, is displayed and honored here at Our Lady of Las Vegas. Our congratulations to the entire Filipino community here at our parish and throughout the world! May God bestow his abundant blessings on you as you continue to follow his Son, Our Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in and through the Roman Catholic Church. 2 — Oඎඋ Lൺൽඒ ඈൿ Lൺඌ Vൾൺඌ Cൺඍඁඈඅංർ Cඁඎඋർඁ Aඉඋංඅ 11, 2021 MASS INTENTIONS TODAY’S READINGS Saturday, April 10 - Saturday within the Octave of Easter First Reading — With great power the apostles bore 4:00pm: †Trinidad Limun witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus (Acts 4:32-35).
