26 Deprivation

In South Cambridgeshire, deprivation is lower than the national average; however Public Health England reports that about 2,500 children live in poverty in the district. The Office for National Statistics used a different measure of deprivation from the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) in the 2011 Census. This measure assesses how many out of four "dimensions of deprivation" a household satisfies. The four dimensions are:

• Dimension 1: Employment – Any member of a household not a full-time student is either unemployed or long-term sick. • Dimension 2: Education – No person in the household has at least level 2 education, and no person aged 16-18 is a full-time student. • Dimension 3: Health & Disability – Any person in the household has general health “bad or very bad” or has a long-term health problem. • Dimension 4: Housing – Household’s accommodation is either overcrowded, with an occupancy rating -1 or less, or is in a shared dwelling, or has no central heating.

In the district, 55.9% of households were not deprived in any dimension, 29.5% of households were deprived in 1 dimension, 12.4% of households were deprived in 2 dimensions, 2.0% of households were deprived in 3 dimensions and 0.1% of households were deprived in 4 dimensions.

Girton has the highest percentage of households deprived in 1 dimension (46.21%); Sawston has the highest percentage of households deprived in 2 dimensions (16.88%) and 3 dimensions (3.48%); Papworth and Elsworth has the highest percentage of households deprived in 4 dimensions; and Bourn has the highest percentage of households not deprived in any dimension (65.64%).

Swavesey has the lowest percentage of households deprived in 1 dimension (22.51%); Caldecote has the lowest percentage of households deprived in 2 dimensions (7.82%); Girton has the lowest percentage of households deprived in 3 dimensions (1.07%); 9 wards have the lowest percentage of households deprived in 4 dimensions (0.0%); and Sawston has the lowest percentage of households not deprived in any dimension (47.29%).
