Volume 32 #3 March, 2017 March brings Michael Santos of the Admirals and ODU Baseball! Join us on Monday, March 6th for a luncheon with Michael Santos of Norfolk Admirals Hockey ! Santos is in his first season as President in Norfolk with 25 years of experience in the hockey industry. His responsibilities include fiscal and strategic planning, evaluating pro players and managing the club’s payroll, salary cap and compliance with the CBA as well as the day-to-day business operations in conjunction with the hockey operations department. Santos began his career with the NHL’s New York office in 1988 before working for the AHL’s New Haven Nighthawks from 1989-91. He returned to the NHL and spent six seasons as the league’s Manager of Special Events establishing both the SuperSkills and Heroes of Hockey pro- grams in addition to overseeing arena operations for the All-Star Weekend, Entry Draft and Stanley Cup Finals. Santos went to work for the New York Islanders in 1997 and became Assistant General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations before leaving and becoming Director of Hockey Operations and Corporate Counsel for the Florida Panthers in 2002. He was named Commissioner and President of the North American Hockey League in 2003 and led the Junior “A” league through three sea- sons of unprecedented growth before arriving in Nashville. Born in Boston and a native of Lowell, Mass., Santos is a 1986 grad- uate of Boston College. He received his Master’s Degree from the United States Sports Academy in 1989, earned his Juris Doc- torate from St. John’s University School of Law in 1998, has been a member of the New York state bar since 1999 and serves on USA Hockey’s junior and legal councils. Join us on Monday, March 20th for a luncheon with Chris Finwood and Tony Guzzo of ODU Baseball! Head coach Chris Finwood enters his sixth season in 2017 at the helm of the Old Dominion baseball program. In just five years at ODU, Chris Finwood, the 2014 ABCA East Region Coach of the Year, has put the Monarch program back into the national spot- light. One of the nation's best, Finwood celebrated his 100th win at ODU with a 15-1 win over Charlotte on April 5th at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex and is currently just 14 wins away from his 400th career head coaching victory. Prior to coming to ODU, Finwood guided Western Kentucky for six years as head coach and was named the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year. Former Old Dominion baseball head coach Tony Guzzo returned to ODU as a special assistant to the head coach prior to the 2017 season. Guzzo, one of the deans of collegiate baseball in the state of Virginia, guided the Monarchs for 10 seasons from 1995 to 2004. During his tenure, Old Dominion won two CAA regular season titles (1996, 2000), two CAA Tournament titles (1995, 1996) and earned three NCAA Regional appearances (1995, 1996, 2000). Overall, Guzzo amassed a career record of 303-252 at Old Dominion, giving the long-time head coach a total of 734 victories as a collegiate skipper. GLOW hesapeae a cadem nnual uction ala Illuminate their world Invest in an innovative education for our exceptional learners. 23rd Annual Auction & Gala Saturday, February 23rd, 2019 The Westin Virginia Beach Town Center cba-va.org/auction MISSION The mission of Chesapeake Bay Academy is to educate students through academic programs individualized to address their learning differences, empowering them with the skills and confidence necessary for success in higher education, careers and life. “There are two kinds of light - the glow that illuminates, and the glare that obscures.” - James Thurber Dear CBA Friends and Family, Welcome to the Chesapeake Bay Academy Auction and Gala. This annual celebration of the CBA community is always a joy to be- hold as we honor our wonderful children and their families, the great work of our dedicated faculty and staff, and the unwavering commitment of our board of trustees. Tonight, we will bask in the warm “glow” of service to our students and the Hampton Roads Community. The importance of this event to CBA’s continued growth cannot be understated. Each year the proceeds of the auction provide much needed funds to support new programs and initiatives, expanding curricular as well as after-school offerings for our students; the funds facilitate a range of professional development opportunities for faculty and staff to enhance their skills and expertise; And, the event provides scholarship funds that are vital to our ability to serve many students who would oth- erwise be unable to afford this life-changing educational opportunity. Recently there has been much in the news regarding the lack of opportunities in the public sector for students with special learning needs.
