And Kylie’s not the only gay icon getting the museum treatment. As we were going to press, we received news that a museum dedicated to Abba is to be opened in Stockholm in 2008! The husband and wife team behind the project came up with the idea after visiting the Beatles museum in Liverpool, and it took them two years to persuade Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid that the concept was a good one. The foursome will not be involved in any way with the project, besides donating items and granting it their blessing. ‘It’s nice someone feels compelled to take on our musical history,’ the group said in a statement. ‘We hope and believe that it will be a KYLIE COUTURE fun and groovy museum to visit.’ www.abbamuseum.com /::G=C@4/D=C@7B39G:734@=19A B=53B63@4=@B6347@ABB7;3

AMY WINEHOUSE G-A-Y Anyone who attended G-A-Y to catch Amy Winehouse in January may want to cut out and keep these photos as a reminder of the 23-year-old singer’s all too brief appearance. In fact, it will probably go down as one of the shortest G-A-Y sets ever! We arrived at the cavernous Astoria at 12.45am to fi nd a queue stretching halfway down to Soho Square, with the signs outside the venue proudly boasting ‘Amy Winehouse – from rehab to G-A-Y!’. Despite it being the weekend after NYE, the club was packed out, with the soul-tinged diva attracting a diverse bunch of fans. The main fl oor danced itself dizzy to the camp pop sounds and dance classics laid down by the G-A-Y jocks, with Whigfi eld’s ‘Saturday Night’ and Donna Summer’s ‘This Time I Know It’s For Real’ proving ever-popular highlights. Come 1.45am, the stage was cleared and we were treated to a suitably camp routine from the G-A-Y danc- ers (the club’s very own version of Pan’s People… for those of you old enough to remember) to the tune of Björk’s ‘It’s Oh So Quiet’. Host Jeremy Joseph then took the stage and announced the evening’s headliner, and a diminutive and slightly disheveled Miss Winehouse took the stage to croon her way through current album track ‘Back To Black’. ‘She looks like she’s been up all night after doing the Friday Night Project yesterday,’ bitched one clubber next to us, and little were we to know how prophetic his words would prove... The song over, Amy then rushed off stage, leaving her band to launch into an instrumental jam. Had she rushed off to change her outfi t? The jam went on… and on… until Jeremy returned to the stage to explain that Amy had been taken ill and was throwing up backstage! ‘The DJs will take to the decks, and hopefully she’ll be back in fi ve minutes.’ Sadly, it wasn’t too be, and Jeremy again returned to the stage to explain that Miss Winehouse too ill to continue and that the gig would be re-scheduled for another time. Many boo-ed, which we thought a tad unfair – it’s not like she hadn’t bothered turning up at all, and she was obviously looking a little under the weather. The offi cial word from her management was that she’d had food poisoning, while the Monday tabloids later insisted that she’d been on a bender with pal Kelly Osbourne in the hours preceding the gig. ‘What can I say,’ Jeremy told us afterwards. ‘It was one of those memorable nights that no one will forget but not for the right reasons. It was really unfortunate, but if she returns to do another gig, we’ll take precautions to ensure she doesn’t have to leave the stage again. We’ll put two buckets out for her!’

G-A-Y can be found every Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at The Astoria, 157 Charing Cross Road, WC2. www.g-a-y.co.uk © [email protected] ©

Who do you think deserves some additional recognition on the scene? I can give you one person straight off and that’s Bette Bourne, of Bloolips Theatre fame. On the political side, Peter Tatchell. And also Jo Purvis, who has been running gay nights in this country longer than anyone else alive, and proving that you can’t go wrong with a bit of eclecticism! SHINKY SHONKY One of North London’s best-kept secrets, The Oak Bar on Green Lanes plays home to a wide-variety of diff erent club promotions. Formerly a traditional , the place has been given a makeover, and is now more a late-night bar and club space, hosting likes of Yalla (a Turkish, Greek and Arabic gathering) and O.C.D (Obsessive Clubbing Disorder). One of the jewels in its crown is the monthly Shinky Shonky. The night will be celebrating a decade of clubbing come August, but has been at the Oak for just over a year now. Imagine Vic Reeves’ original Big Night Out given a queer, cartoonish twist, with host Boogaloo Stu presiding over smutty cabaret, childish stage games and a disco that takes in everything from Dusty Springfi eld to Lily Allen, by way of Blondie. DJ ALBERT The January bash was a typically sociable aff air, with around 200 gay boys and girls getting down to the sounds from DJ Albert Twatlock. TWATLOCK’S ‘He has DJ’ed at Shinky Shonky since it began,’ Stu told us, ‘and defi nitely gives the music policy its unique SET LIST edge - there’s nothing too obscure but equally there’s no cheese - it’s a veritable smorgasbord of non-stop cool pop tunes.’ 01‘We Are Your Friends’ – Stu himself mingled with the punters, distributing sweets and the club’s famed pin badges. The night Justice vs. Simian attracts its fair share of… erm, characters, and with the bar selling shooters such as the Dildo Basher, 02‘Love At First Sight’ – Slippery Nipple and Quick Fuck at £3 a go, things were getting very merry indeed in some quarters. Kylie At half midnight the stage was cleared and the cabaret began. January saw the long-awaited return of 03‘Theme From S’Express’– Brighton’s own Dolly Rocket, who belted out a sterling version of ‘These Boots Were Made For Walking’, S’Express before Princess Twinkle Knickers performed a burlesque striptease with the aid of a washing line and 04‘Something Kinda Ooh’ – powder! Girls Aloud Stu then picked the hapless Sophie and Noel from the audience to take part in the evening’s gameshow 05‘Somebody Told Me’ – – the charmingly titled Shit Lips. Get the wrong answer to the question and Miss Twinkle Knickers daubed The Killers your lips in poo (or it could have been chocolate body paint…). Poor Noel left the stage looking particularly 06‘SexyBack’ – messy! Justin Timberlake Has Stu always been so scatologically obsessed? 07‘LDN’ – ‘No, not really! Bodily fl uids in general have somehow become a consistent part of my witty repartee and Lily Allen cum, bumjuice, ladyjam and pee all make regular appearances. There is no particular bias towards poo!’ 08‘Music’ – It’s a club night, it’s a disco, it’s a right old Carry On… The one and only Shinky Shonky. THE TWO BREWERS If there’s one act guaranteed to pull a crowd to the Two Brewers in Clapham, it’s Aussie air hostess Pam Ann. The aquamarine-suited comic has long been a favourite at the South London cabaret bar, and it would appear that the love aff air is mutual. It’s known that Pam loves to perform at the venue, and often treats the appreciate audience to new material. The high-fl ying performer has recently taken up a new Sunday night residency at the bar, appearing live on stage each week at 8pm. The run continues until the end of February, ahead of her UK ‘One World Alliance’ tour in March. We popped along in January to check out the show, which in true trolley-dolly fashion kicked off with a hilarious ‘safety video’ on the screens, before Pam launched into her routine. Be warned… you don’t necessarily want to be standing in the fi rst row unless you want to be included in her barbed banter! Pam’s show is one of the weekly highlights at this famous South London institution. Other regular events include Kevin Walsh’s karaoke each Tuesday, an audience with Julie Paid each Wednesday, and the quiz night with Chris Reardon on Thursdays. Top name cabaret acts are always booked in for the Friday and Saturday night entertainment, with the partying continuing till late in the Club Bar. CASE STUDY: LAUREL SMITHSON SITUATION: LIVINGWITH PARENTS LOCATION: STEVENAGE, HERTFORDSHIRE DEVELOPER: GENESISHOMES Contact: 0845 600 4663 Website: www.silkinsfield.co.uk

Laurel Smithson has got off to an ideal start in 2007 with the help of the New Build HomeBuy scheme. The 25 year-old journalist from Stevenage had previously been living at home with her parents but decided it was high time to spread her wings. She started looking for her first home but soon became discouraged: “The prices were out of my reach and the places I did look at were too small and in a poor condition.” Laurel then came across an advert for shared ownership apartments in the local newspaper. She contacted Genesishomes to express interest and before long she was choosing a brand new two-bedroom apartment at Silkin’s Field, in the heart of Stevenage. The full market value was £150,000 so Laurel had to raise £60,000 for her 40% share. Features include NEED THE PERFECT kitchens fitted with modern appliances and designer bathroom suites. Laurel bought her apartment off-plan and had already exchanged contracts by the time her new home was built. COMMUTER HOME? “The purchasing process was smooth,” she says. “My family and friends are very pleased for me and some of them will definitely be looking into becoming my neighbours.” :==9<=4C@B63@B6/<B636=::73A /B6=::G1=C@B7<@=;4=@2 AFFORDABLE HOME OWNERSHIP DEMAND MORE BVS6]ZZWSaRSdSZ]^ ORX]W\W\U@][T]`R¸a "^S`QS\bOdOWZOPZS [S\bWaQ]\dS\WS\bZg :WPS`bgaV]^^W\U[OZZa bVS`SQ][[S\RSR Just a few short years ago, people’s chances of purchasing through part buy, part rent (also known Z]QObSRW\bVSVSO`b bVSaSQ]\bS[^]`O`g [W\W[c[W\Q][SWa as shared ownership) were few and far between.
