Abdelbary, Kareem Social Justice Platform (University of Manchester) Shokran Bank Misr: Inventing Egypt’s 20th Century Economic Nationalism Myth. Today, wandering through the streets of Cairo, one would take no time to notice the over-flooding of “Tal’at Harb raga’a” billboards. The campaign was launched in 2017 by Bank Misr, one of Egypt’s largest state-owned banks, propagating for its services in financing small and medium-sized enterprises. Historically, the bank was established by Harb in 1920 in the aftermath of events known as Egypt’s 1919 revolution. So, it continues to be held as a nationalist symbol. Indeed, the tactic of calling on Tala’at Harb [the godfather of Egypt’s economic nationalism] among the ‘ordinary’ citizen, is not unprecedented or alien and was used in earlier campaign titled “Shokran Bank Misr” among others. The popular narrative [found in official circulars and main sources written by both Egyptian liberal and leftist intellectuals] contends that 1919 was a movement uniting Egyptians of different classes, calling for independence from the British occupation. Further, is this narrative’s emphasis on 1919’s economic nationalism, embodied in projects such as Bank Misr, as the blueprint not just to prosperity and welfare but also to economic independence. Altogether, this depiction coincides with the current regime’s nationalistic rhetoric about mega-nationalist project. By presenting [read utilizing] that era’s model as inspiration, the regime is trying to legitimize its neoliberal inspirations while reviving a nationalistic sentiment among the masses to secure public consent. Analogously, it creates a propagandistic mirroring which fetishizes the 1919’s model. -

Ivs Fvgit, 19, 2016, pp. 175-208 ISSN: 1132-8975 THE NOTION OF SOVEREIGNTY IN THE CONSTITUTIONAL PROCESS OF CÁDIZ (1810-1812)* When Cádiz spoke to the world – a paradigm of constitutional communication in 19th century Europe Marius MÜLLER Universidad de Passau (Alemania) [email protected] RESUMEN: En la interfaz de las ciencias jurídicas e históricas este estudio intenta anali- zar el proceso de constitucionalización en Cádiz como un proceso vívido de comu- nicación en el marco de una historia constitucional de Europa, bajo especial consideración de las influencias de la Escuela de Salamanca. La ambigüedad e indeterminación al respecto de las nociones fundamentales del constitucionalismo – por ejemplo al respecto de la noción de soberanía es decir del concepto del pou- voir constituant – son las principales características de los discursos públicos durante los procesos de constitucionalización en Europa. De esos discursos surge la autoridad que las Cortes Generales y Extraordinarias reclamaron en Cádiz con su fórmula de legitimación: «Las Cortes hablan a España y al mundo: la sencilla narración de sus actas es su proclama y su apología». Esa frase refleja además que en la Europa del siglo XIX, Constitución es el resultado de las interacciones conflictivas de un contexto social, de la práctica política y de los modelos resul- tantes de una interpretación constitucional. Abstract: This thesis studies the expansion of workers’ collective action and collective bargaining over working conditions in the context of the Spanish Restauracion (1875-1923), in an institutional setting characterised by the absence or little enforcement of legislation concerning industrial conflict and the regulation of working conditions. The thesis addresses two of the main issues in the contemporary and historical debate. The first one addresses the causes of labour unrest and the existence of a weak and politically radical labour movement. A second related issue argues that, had Spanish unions adopted the outlook of more conservative British or German unions, they would have been able to advance the interests of workers more effectively. -

Esto lo sé por ciencia propia; pero aun sabiendo esto, no os habrá de extrañar mi falta de condiciones para que yo pueda estar en armonía con el debate”. Pablo Iglesias en el Congreso, 7 de julio de 1910. Este año cumpliremos y celebraremos como Partido 140 años de historia. Pero La Socialista ha reparado en un aniversario que no podemos dejar pasar por alto: el centenario de la constitución del primer Grupo Parlamentario Socialista en las Cortes de 1918, la primera Minoría Socialista española de la Cámara, según la terminología de la época. El primer diputado socialista español, Pablo Iglesias Posse, fue elegido por vez primera en las filas de la Conjunción Republicano Socialista en mayo de 1910, y como tal repitió escaño en las elecciones siguientes de marzo de 1914 y abril de 1916. -
Preston, Paul, the Coming of the Spanish Civil War: Reform, Reaction and Revolution in the Second
THE COMING OF THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR The breakdown of democracy in Spain in the 1930s resulted in a torrent of political and military violence. In this thoroughly revised edition of his classic text, Paul Preston provides a deeply disturbing explanation of the democratic collapse, coherently and excitingly outlining the social and economic background. Spain was a backward agricultural country divided by the most brutal economic inequalities. The coming of the Second Republic in April 1931 was greeted by the Left as an opportunity to reform Spain’s antiquated social structure. Over the next two years, the Socialist members of a Republican—Socialist coalition pushed for reforms to alleviate the day-to- day misery of the great southern army of landless labourers. Paul Preston shows how the political activities of the Right, legal and conspiratorial, between 1931 and 1936, as well as the subsequent Nationalist war effort, were primarily a response to these reforming ambitions of the Left. His principal argument is that, although the Spanish Civil War encompassed many separate conflicts, the main cause of the breakdown of the Second Republic was the struggle between Socialists and the legalist Right to impose their respective views of social organisation on Spain by means of their control of the apparatus of state. The incompatible interests represented by these two mass parliamentary parties—those of the landless labourers and big landlords, of industrialists and workers—spilled over into social conflicts which could not be contained within the parliamentary arena. Since the first edition of this book was completed more than fifteen years ago, archives have been opened up, the diaries, letters and memoirs of major protagonists have been published, and there have been innumerable studies of the politics of the Republic, of parties, unions, elections and social conflict, both national and provincial. -

PREMIOS PRÍNCIPE DE ASTURIAS Comunicación Y Humanidades Ciencias Sociales
PREMIOS PRÍNCIPE DE ASTURIAS Comunicación y Humanidades Ciencias Sociales Coincidiendo con la entrega de los Premios Príncipe de Asturias 2007, el próximo día 26 de octubre, se presenta esta bibliografía que recoge, para las categorías de Comunicación y Humanidades y de Ciencias Sociales, las obras de y sobre los galardonados que conserva este Centro: al fondo ya existente, se han añadido nuevas adquisiciones realizadas durante este año. Esta Guía del Lector da un repaso a los nombres de los premiados a lo largo de veintiséis años, dentro de las categorías a las que se ha hecho referencia, permitiendo al lector conocer las publicaciones de mayor interés. Cuando el premio ha recaído sobre una institución, se han incluído obras que ofrecen un acercamiento a través de su historia, su organización y sus funciones. La labor creadora o de investigación de los premiados ha supuesto una aportación relevante a la cultura universal en los ámbitos mencionados. Estos premios, que se concedieron por primera vez en 1981, han ido creciendo cada año en importancia hasta llegar a convertirse en un referente cultural, científico y social de envergadura, manteniendo los valores de objetividad, tanto en la selección de candidatos como en la concesión de los premios. Su objetivo es “galardonar la labor científica, técnica, cultural, social y humana realizada por personas, equipos de trabajo o instituciones en el ámbito internacional”. La bibliografía se organiza en dos categorías, Comunicación y Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales, las primeras que presenta en su página web la Fundación Príncipe de Asturias. Dentro de cada categoría, la información se distribuye cronológicamente en orden inverso - arrancando desde 2007 hasta alcanzar el año 1981- y, dentro de cada año, se ha ordenado alfabéticamente por el nombre de los premiados cuando el premio es compartido.
