These young people recounted so many more stories from their 4 lives of how they were looked upon with a ‘special’ gaze - that of the Lord.” 6 Salesian Spiritual Companionship with Young People Today Perhaps one of the greatest risks in our lives is that we become so busy achieving our life dreams, so preoccupied with meeting our objectives and deadlines, that we have no time to notice what is truly happening. 15 100 Years of Salesians in Ireland The Salesians of Don Bosco came to Ireland, at the invitation of Dr Denis Hallinan, the Bishop of Limerick. On the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception, 8th December 1919, four Salesians, led by Fr Aloysius Sutherland SDB, arrived in Copsewood House, Pallaskenry, Co. Limerick. They opened 15 an Agricultural College, the first foundation of the Salesians in Ireland. 16 UR Space, Glasgow The Salesian Sisters’ Glasgow-based UR Space project has just begun its sixth year. Its mission is an unusual one, having at its heart a community of Sisters and young adults, living in the same house, sharing household tasks, working together, and praying together. 20 World Youth Day in Panama A joint British and Austrian group attended the WYD activities in Panama. There were many highlights, including the Salesian Family Day in the Basilica of Don Bosco with the Rector Major and Mother Yvonne, tourist sites like the Panama Canal, Cultural events around the city, liturgical events and of course, the presence of Pope Francis. With young people from all over the world, but particularly from Central and South America, the city streets 20 were awash with music and laughter. 24 Remembering Salesian Pioneers: Fr Edward Patrick McKiernan SDB 1860 -1888 32 Spreading the ‘Gospel of Don Bosco’ My teaching experience reminds me of Don Bosco as a young priest at the height of the Industrial Revolution, and how in the toughest of situations, he had to tackle the problems of poor young people. The young are always the most vulnerable and open to exploitation. 24 36 125th Anniversary of the Consecration of the Sacred Heart Church, Battersea: A Celebration It is wonderful to have this opportunity to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the consecration of the Church of the Sacred Heart, together with the Battersea parish and Battersea Salesian communities. He studied in Paris from 1245-1248 under Saint Albert the Great, then accompanied Albertus to Cologne.     Don Bosco’s Devotion to Mary Help of Christians Mamma Margaret and Francis Bosco instilled into their children a strong devotion to Mary, praying the rosary together daily as a family. John made this devotion his and would make the recitation of the rosary one of the cornerstones of his Preventive System. John was devoted to Mary under any title though at various times of his life there was greater emphasis placed on one or the other. Growing up, the primary devotion was to the Immaculate, as the Woman who remained free from the stain of sin, always doing God’s Will. In Chieri, during his first vocation crisis at the end of high school in 1835, John made a novena to know the Lord’s Will, as regarded that vocation, to Our Lady of Grace for it was her painting that adorned one of the altars in the Duomo there. Upon moving to Torino, Our Lady of Consolation was most frequently appealed to since her church was but a stone’s throw from the Oratory and there was an ancient devotion to her in that city. It was before her image that Don Bosco knelt and to her that he entrusted himself, asking her to now “be his mother” upon Mamma Margaret’s death in 1856. Then, revolutionary fever escalated in Italy (or, better, in the many individual kingdoms in what would become Italy in 1870). Rebels began to ask for the unification of Italy, whether peacefully or by force. Kings could give up their smaller kingdoms peacefully in favor of a unified Italy or they would be taken by force, if necessary.

    NOVENA TO BLESSED JOSEPH ALLAMANO A Family man, founding a Missionary Family to make the world One Family in God Day 1 - Allamano and his father, Joseph Allamano Blessed Allamano was born at Castelnuovo D’Asti – today Castelnuovo Don Bosco- from Joseph Allamano and Marianna Cafasso. He was the fourth of five children. There is no much information about the father, but we know that he had a brother who was a priest (Fr. John Allamano) and he died due to carbuncle on 2nd December 1853, when blessed Allamano was not yet three years old. A niece would say that he was a good Christian and he died due to an infection. Both parents were living in the rural area; they were excellent Christians and very charitable. The father was a very faithful and pious companion of his wife. He seemed to have been illiterate. PRAYER: Blessed Joseph Allamano, you knew what it means to have charitable parents and how they influenced your open heart to the needs of the world. You also knew the pain of not having your father from your early age. Intercede for us and especially for those who have lost their fathers and still suffer the pain of it. May they move ahead in their lives with the support of the rest of the family members. Intercede for us to value our fathers for what they are and not for the intellectual knowledge they have or for any position they may occupy in the society. May all fathers take care of their families aware that they are called to be the image of God the Father and of Christ himself.

    “LA VIRGEN FRONTERIZA”: LA AUXILIADORA DE DON BOSCO COMO DIS- POSITIVO DE TERRITORIALIDAD DEVOCIONAL (SXIX-XX)1 María Andrea Nicoletti* Resumen Bajo la categoría de “Virgen fronteriza”, analizamos a María Auxiliadora de Don Bosco, patrona de la Congregación Salesiana, en el territorio argentino, como un dispositivo devocional que marca fronteras, construye territorialidades y crea identidades sociales a lo largo del tiempo. Esta advocación “transplantada” por los Salesianos e Hijas de María Auxiliadora, desde su llegada a la Argentina en 1895, ha marcado a través de su devoción, dos espacios mediante una frontera claramente delimita- da: desde el río Colorado hacia el Norte y desde el Colorado hacia el Sur. El primer territorio ha sido construido a través de una “adaptación devocional” y parcialmente iconográfica, de la Auxiliadora como Patro- na del Agro argentino, desde 1949. During his Rectorate the Salesians grew from 1030 members in 64 houses to 4420 confreres scattered across the globe. These letters offer the reader a glimpse of the character of their writer and of the pastoral care he took of a small group of relatively insignificant Salesians in what was very often the inhospitable atmosphere of the British Empire at the height of its power.
