  • Novena to Blessed Joseph Allamano
NOVENA TO BLESSED JOSEPH ALLAMANO A Family man, founding a Missionary Family to make the world One Family in God Day 1 - Allamano and his father, Joseph Allamano Blessed Allamano was born at Castelnuovo D’Asti – today Castelnuovo Don Bosco- from Joseph Allamano and Marianna Cafasso. He was the fourth of five children. There is no much information about the father, but we know that he had a brother who was a priest (Fr. John Allamano) and he died due to carbuncle on 2nd December 1853, when blessed Allamano was not yet three years old. A niece would say that he was a good Christian and he died due to an infection. Both parents were living in the rural area; they were excellent Christians and very charitable. The father was a very faithful and pious companion of his wife. He seemed to have been illiterate. PRAYER: Blessed Joseph Allamano, you knew what it means to have charitable parents and how they influenced your open heart to the needs of the world. You also knew the pain of not having your father from your early age. Intercede for us and especially for those who have lost their fathers and still suffer the pain of it. May they move ahead in their lives with the support of the rest of the family members. Intercede for us to value our fathers for what they are and not for the intellectual knowledge they have or for any position they may occupy in the society. May all fathers take care of their families aware that they are called to be the image of God the Father and of Christ himself.

  • St Joseph Cafasso Urgent Was the Prison System
Lives of Saints 1811 - 1860 Feastday: 23rd January I was born in 1811, in northern Italy, near the city of Turin. I had loving parents who were willing to sacrifice for my education, and I went to Turin to study as a priest. I was ordained a priest in 1833. When I graduated, I became a theology professor, and was Superior of the college in Turin from 1846 to 1860. I taught many young priests over the years. I became known as the priest who believed in the gentle and loving mercy of God. I was kind. I gave people courage and hope, and I became renowned as a confessor. I was also a Retreat house director, and at one point, the Pastor of Saint Francis Church. I guided many priests, religious and lay people in the spiritual life. I promoted especially, the devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. “We are born to I met John Bosco in 1827 when he was just twelve. I assisted over sixty men who were sentenced to death. I told them of God’s love and mercy, and heard their confessions. All of them repented and died in the peace of Jesus.

  • Reflections on Virtue Saint John Rosco's Heroic Faith As Reported by Eyewitnesses in His Beatification Process
Reflections on Virtue Saint John Rosco's Heroic Faith as Reported by Eyewitnesses in his Beatification Process Joseph Boenzi Introduction y January 1896, the Church in Turin was winding down its preliminary investigation into the life and virtue of the late priest and educator John B Bosco. Since 1890, a team appointed by Cardinal Gaetano Alimonda (1818-1891), and reconfirmed by Archbishop Davide Riccardi (1833-1897), hal gathered the testimony of 29 eyewitnesses who made sworn deposition regarding all they knew about John Bosco's life, work, and virtues. At least another 15 witnesses were due to appear before the arrival of summer. If those conducting this "informative process" felt the evidence warranted it, the archdiocese of Turin would formally propose the late John Bosco to Rome as a candidate for beatification and canonization. The procedure, which followed the prescribed format, resembled something of an inquest, even a "trial." However, this "trial" did not so much center on what Don John Bosco had done or not done during his lifetime - Don Bosco was easily one of Turin's best known churchmen. Instead it launched a thorough examination of his character and virtues. This is because beatification is not based on personal success but on an heroic and exemplary practice of Christian virtues. Witnesses were to testify to the "servant of God's" practice of the theological, cardinal and moral virtues: faith, hope, charity with God, charity toward neighbor, prudence, justice, fortitude, obedience, humility, piety and reputation for holiness. If after a thorough scientific and legal examination, it 82 Journal of Saleslan Studies could be proved that the person in question lived a life of Christian virtue "to an heroic degree," he or she could be declared "venerable," that is, worthy of imitation.

  • VALDOCCO – the LAND of SANCTITY the Path to Holiness in the Company of the Saints
VALDOCCO – THE LAND OF SANCTITY The Path to Holiness in the company of the Saints Going through some places of our origins, we want to welcome the call to holiness of Pope Francis which resounds loudly for us today through his witness of life and the Word. 1 The Family of Don Bosco, developing a characteristic spirituality of charismatic origin, enriches the whole Body of the Church with a very particular model of Christian life. This is borne out by the numerous groups of spiritual sons and daughters of Don Bosco who have already been declared Venerable or saints, or set out on the path of beatification and canonization.... (From the Charismatic Identity Card of the Salesian Family, 6). The spirituality inherited from Don Bosco is eminently ecclesial: it manifests and nourishes the communion of the Church by building, within the Christian communities, a network of fraternal relationships and effective collaborations; it is an educational spirituality that aims to help the young and the poor to feel at ease in the Church, to be builders of the Church and participants in her mission; it is a spirituality that enriches the whole Church with the gift of the holiness of so many of her sons and daughters. (From the Charismatic Identity Card of the Salesian Family, 26). 2 BATTISTERO DELLA BASILICA DI MARIA 1 AUSILIATRICE LIVE THE GRACE OF BAPTISM At the Baptismal Font, we are born to the life of grace: immersed in the death on the cross of Jesus, we have been subtracted from the power of original sin and we have risen to the new life that Jesus inaugurated.

Seasoning the Seasons™ The Institute for Christian Formation, Inc. logo©2004 by R Fulwiler Text©2008 by Sandra A. Chakeres. All rights reserved. Feast of Saint John Bosco Saint John Bosco: January 31 On January 31, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint John Bosco. John Bosco, or Giovanni Bosco in Italian, was born in Murialdo near Castelnuovo d’Asti in Italy on August 15, 1815. He was the youngest of three sons. When he was only two years old, John’s father died. His mother, Margaret, was left to raise her children alone. The family was very, very poor. When he was growing up, John did many different jobs to try to bring home money to help his family. He did not have nice clothes or shoes to wear. His family really did not have any material possessions at all. One time John and his mother had gone to hear a sermon by Father Joseph Cafasso, who also became a saint. Father Cafasso realized how brilliant John was, and encouraged him to become a priest. Since John’s family didn’t have any money, John entered the seminary at the age of eighteen through the charity of others. Even his clothes and shoes were donated to him! John went to the seminary in Turin to study to become a priest. Turin is a city in the Piedmont region of Italy. You might recognize the name of this city, because not too long ago the Winter Olympics were held there. But in the 1800s, when John was in the seminary, Turin was in the middle of the Industrial Revolution.

2010 Letter of Father General Fr. AQUILÉO FIORENTINI, IMC (B.U., Fascicolo 131, 2010, pp 1-14) ALLAMANO AND HIS ONCLE SAINT JOSEPH CAFASSO PROTECTOR FOR THE YEAR 2011 Rome, October 24, 2010 World Mission Sunday Dearest Confreres, I have the pleasure of announcing to you that, in agreement with the Consolata Missionary Sisters, Saint Joseph Cafasso is proposed as the special protector of our two institutes for the year 2011. I have no doubt that this choice will be acceptable to everybody. Cafasso, as we know, by the will of our Father Founder, has always had a special place in the life of our missionary family, so much so that from the beginning, we have called him “our uncle”. In addition, on June 23rd this year, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of his holy death, an event that saw us committed and we intend to keep experiencing for a long time his remembrance and grace. It has seemed quite right to us, therefore, to entrust to his protection the next year, during which we will be celebrating the XII General Chapter. In this letter, I would like to offer some reflections on St. Joseph Cafasso, starting though from the point of view of Allamano himself. I wish, that is, to make a family conversation: it is our “Father” who talks to us about his “Uncle”. We know how much the Founder has identified himself with the spirituality of Cafasso. No one else, therefore, can speak with competence about the sanctity of Cafasso more than our Founder and thus present him to us not only as a protector but also as a model.

  • Who Was John Bosco?
Who was John Bosco? John Bosco (16 August 1815– 31 January 1888), popularly known as Don Bosco, was an Italian Roman Catholic priest, educator and writer of the 19th century. While working in Turin, where the population suffered many of the ill-effects of industrialisation and urbanisation, he dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth. He developed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method that became known as the Salesian Preventive System. A follower of the spirituality and philosophy of Francis de Sales, Bosco was an ardent devotee of Mary, mother of Jesus, under the title Mary Help of Christians. He later dedicated his works to De Sales when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, based in Turin. Together with Maria Domenica Mazzarello, he founded the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a religious congregation of nuns dedicated to the care and education of poor girls. In 1876 Bosco founded a movement of laity, the Association of Salesian Cooperators, with the same educational mission to the poor. In 1875, he began to publish the Salesian Bulletin. The Bulletin has remained in continuous publication and is currently published in 50 different editions and 30 languages. His Life John Bosco was born in the evening of 16 August 1815 in the hillside hamlet of Becchi, Italy. He was the youngest son of Francesco Bosco (1784–1817) and Margherita Occhiena. He had two older brothers, Antonio, and Giuseppe (1813–1862). The Boscos of Becchi were farmhands of the Moglian Family.
