letter portrays five men determined to carry out a divinely appointed mission and an equally adamant indian agent determined to com- ply with federal regulations his letter explains the reasons for     "Lamanites" and the Spirit of the Lord Eugene England EDITORS' NOTE: This issue of DIALOGUE, which was funded by Dora Hartvigsen England and Eugene England Sr., and their children and guest-edited by David J. Whittaker, has been planned as an effort to increase understanding of the history of Mor- mon responses to the "Lamanites" — native peoples of the Americas and Poly- nesia. We have invited Eugene England, Jr., professor of English at BYU, to document his parents' efforts, over a period of forty years, to respond to what he names "the spirit of Lehi" — a focused interest in and effort to help those who are called Lamanites. His essay also reviews the sources and proper present use of that term (too often used with misunderstanding and offense) and the origins and prophesied future of those to whom it has been applied. y parents grew up conditioned toward racial prejudice — as did most Americans, including Mormons, through their generation and into part of mine.     The Story of the BOOK OF MORMON 1. The Book of Mormon begins with a prophet named Lehi, who lived with his family in Jerusa- lem. Lehi warned the wicked people in Jerusalem that they would be destroyed if they did not repent, but the people didn’t listen. The Lord told Lehi to take his wife, Sariah, and their sons—Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi—into the wilder- ness. (See 1 Nephi 1–2.) 3. The book of Ether tells us that Omer traveled to this place of the last battles of the Nephites, and that the relatively short duration of this journey would not account for the three thousand miles from Middle America to New York. A similar journey was undertaken by Limhi’s men, of equally short duration.     11 Prevalent in Folktales Throughout the World and in Popular Media in America, the “Wise Child” Whose Innocence Sees Throug

    AND A CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM: THE WISE CHILD FOLK MOTIF IN MORMON DISCOURSE SPENCER LINCOLN GREEN Prevalent in folktales throughout the world and in popular media in America, the “Wise Child” whose innocence sees through the deceptions, greed, envy, and ingratitude of his or her elders flourishes in Mormon official and lay discourse. Paradoxical in its inherent reversal of hierarchies in a religion often noted for its hierarchies, the wise child, rather than challenging adults and exposing adult foibles to mockery, is used to gently remind all members of their shortcomings and encourage greater adherence to church doctrines. Since the wise child in folk and popular culture is most often a trickster figure who points out foibles and follies in adults, how has it come to be used so often in Mormon discourse by those very adults and authority figures who are usually the butt of its jokes? This paper seeks to look at the significance of the wise child in Mormon official discourse, the transformation it has undergone there, and what that has to say about Mormon culture. While the wise child is prevalent throughout Mormon discourse, this study is limited to the examples in the Spring and Fall sessions of General Conference. General Conference is a biannual meeting consisting of five two hour meetings over a Saturday and Sunday in April and October when Church Leaders present doctrinal and exhortive talks to church membership worldwide. ISSN 1065-9366 (print), 2168-3158 (online) Abstract Critics of the Book of Mormon often cite genetic “evi- dence” in their attacks on the historicity of the text, saying that the lack of any Near Eastern–American Indian DNA links conclusively proves that no emi- gration ever occurred from the Near East to the Americas. Their simplistic approach—that the Book of Mormon purports to be a history of the entire American Indian race—is not supported by archaeo- logical or Book of Mormon evidence. The authors pose and respond to questions about the geographi- cal scene, the spread of Book of Mormon peoples, Latter-day Saint traditions about the scenes and peo- ples of the Book of Mormon, the terms Nephites and Lamanites, the possible presence of others in the land, ocean travel, Mesoamerican native traditions, lan- guages of the Western Hemisphere, Old World peoples coming to the Americas, archaeological evidence, and ethnically distinct populations in ancient American art.
