Moving freely between epigraphs and the main text, Roberts obe succeeds in throwing fresh light on the manifold ‘middleness’ of Middlemarch and the richness and sophistcaton of George Eliot’s realism. R ts John Rignall In Middlemarch, George Eliot draws a character passionately absorbed by abstruse allusion and obscure epigraphs. Casaubon’s obsession is a cautonary tale, but Adam Roberts nonetheless sees in him an invitaton to take Eliot’s use of epigraphy and allusion seriously, and this book is an atempt to do just that. Roberts considers the epigraph as a mirror that refracts the meaning of a text, and that thus carries important resonances for the way Eliot’s novels generate their meanings. In this lively and provoking study, he tracks down those allusions and quotatons that have hitherto gone unidentfed by scholars, examining their MIDDLEMARCH relatonship to the text in which they sit to unfurl a broader argument about the novel – both this novel, and the novel form itself. Middlemarch: Epigraphs and Mirrors is both a study of George Eliot and a meditaton on the textuality of fcton. It is essental reading for specialists and students of George Eliot, the nineteenth century novel, and intertextuality. It will also richly reward anyone who has ever taken pleasure in Middlemarch. Background of the Study Literature is a social institution, using language as medium of social creation. Furthermore, literature represents life and life is in large measure, a social reality (Wellek 1959: 94). Hence, a literary work which is the author’s creation is an ideal reflection of social reality. The literary work and the author cannot be separated since; the literary work is a reproduction of the author’s mind. The author’s mind is a result of the author’s response towards the social reality where he or she lives. An author lives among the society which he or she associates and mingles with it. As human being an author is like the other people who are influenced by his or her religious conviction, social idea, settlement, culture and convention of his or her culture. However, an author does not always in harmony or agrees with the social circumstances in his or her society. He or she can also require a different view on it. The different view toward his or her social life force him or her to change and shape the behavior and the social view of his or her society. An author expresses his or her view by creating a work art. -

Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Gregory Flaxman Erin Carlston Eric Downing Andrew Perrin Pamela Cooper © 2016 Lindsay Rebecca Starck ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Lindsay Rebecca Starck: “News that stays news”: Transformations of Literature, Gossip, and Community in Modernity (Under the direction of Gregory Flaxman and Erin Carlston) Recent decades have demonstrated a renewed interest in gossip research from scholars in psychology, sociology, and anthropology who argue that gossip—despite its popular reputation as trivial, superficial “women’s talk”—actually serves crucial social and political functions such as establishing codes of conduct and managing reputations. My dissertation draws from and builds upon this contemporary interdisciplinary scholarship by demonstrating how the modernists incorporated and transformed the popular gossip of mass culture into literature, imbuing it with a new power and purpose. The foundational assumption of my dissertation is that as the nature of community changed at the turn of the twentieth century, so too did gossip. Although usually considered to be a socially conservative force that serves to keep social outliers in line, I argue that modernist writers transformed gossip into a potent, revolutionary tool with which modern individuals could advance and promote the progressive ideologies of social, political, and artistic movements. Ultimately, the gossip of key American expatriates (Henry James, Djuna Barnes, Janet Flanner, and Ezra Pound) became a mode of exchanging and redefining creative and critical values for the artists and critics who would follow them. -

The Trope of Passage in English Hours Marie-Odile SALATI LLSETI (EA 3706), Université Savoie Mont Blanc Abstract:This article suggests that the English Hours travel essays written in the 1870s were the crucible in which James perfected his technique of literary representation. Focusing on progress across space and tropes of liminality, the study highlights the presence, as of 1872, of the scenario of ghostly vision which dramatizes the shift from observation to reflection in the author’s fiction. It also shows how the 1877 essays mirror the novelist’s ethical concerns as he was working his way towards a poetical rendering of prosaic urban modernity. The notes on various visits to Italy are here for the first time exclusively placed together, and as they largely refer to quite other days than these—the date affixed to each paper sufficiently indicating this—I have introduced a few passages that speak for a later and in some cases a frequently repeated vision of the places and scenes in question. Analyzing Teacher-Student Relationships in the Life and Thought of William James to Inform Educators Today DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Julia Teal Novakowski, M.Ed, MA Graduate Program in Educational Studies The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee: Bryan Warnick, Advisor Jackie Blount Antoinette Errante Copyrighted by Julia Teal Novakowski 2019 Abstract Enriching teacher-student relationships is timely considering the increase in school violence, the changing demographics in schools, and the fact that educational aims focused on high-stakes testing often ignore relationships. When applying philosophy to teacher-student relationships, we must ask both whose voices are missing from our current conversation and how we can apply their insights to improve education. While philosophers such as John Dewey, Paulo Freire, and Nel Noddings have all contributed to that conversation, William James’s philosophy and pedagogy provide a unique perspective on teacher-student relationships that is largely absent within the field of philosophy of education. In this dissertation, I explore the relationship between the philosophy of James, his personality, and the productive relationships he had with students. I suggest that there is a link between his pragmatism, pluralism, and psychology, and the way he interacted with students. His philosophy can be evaluated from its actual effects in the world and by how it changes us as individuals. I suggest that the cash value, or impact in real life, of James’s philosophy in the context of education, plays out in particular forms of relationships of openness, experimentation, curiosity about others, spontaneity, and communication.
